Batman: Arkham Asylum - Page 5

I never lie about Batman.

Except that one time when I said Batman likes asparagus. He's just okay with asparagus. I mean, he'll eat it if you're serving it, but that's mostly because he's a very polite guest.

Gah, the surprisingly great reviews and the $5-off being applied to release-date Amazon delivery have tricked me into ordering this for my birthday.
I'm pretty excited about the game. I actually considered buying the special edition that comes with a plastic batarang for a couple of minutes, which was scary.
Yeah, but it's like welded to a paperweight, so eff that.
I almost picked it up on amazon.com (I have a prime account) but they say it wont be here until the 28th even with 1 day shipping... I need it the 25th!.. for fucks sake man! The WORLD could END in those 3 days!!!
My brother got it for me for my birthday (he's giving it to me next week) and he ended up grabbing the Special Ed. with the batarang. If it is indeed welded to the display stand, I'm UNWELDING it.
Went for the PC flavor myself (44 bucks shipped), so I'll be decidedly jealous of you console Batman players.
It's great so far! Just great stuff. Only an hour into it so far though.
IGN's review is up, and they call it the best comic book video game ever made. So much for keeping my expectations low, this looks like it might be the real deal.
What other good comic book games are there to compare to it to though?
The Punisher game for PS2/XBOX was much better than the movie, if not a little boring and repetitive in spots. Same with the new Wolverine game.

Hulk: Ultimate Destruction deserved more attention than it ended up getting.

Marvel: Ultimate Alliance is good fun with friends.

Annnd...that's all I got.
The old side scrolling beat 'em ups, particularly the Konami X-Men game were good. The Sega Genesis X-Men platforming game was good. Spider-Man 2 counts.
The Amazon code is REALLY making me want to order it. I'll probably end up doing it later.

I lucked out. $49 shipped w/ release date delivery from amazon thanks to a "$10 off your next game purchase" that I forgot about after pre-ordering Prince of Persia back in December. Suck on that, bitches!

Can. Not. Wait.

I'm pretty sure it's just:

Joker
Harley
Poison Ivy
Bane
Croc
Scarecrow
Riddler
Penguin
Ra'as al Guhl

And that's all you need...all are AAA titles in their own right regardless of the attention given. That being said, B:AA looks (and plays) amazing. The Punisher wins for the funeral set piece alone.
A lot of people would also include Marvel vs Capcom. But not me.
Alot of those game did get decent reception.

I never played any of them besides Marvel Ult. Alliance. I actually ended hating it. But thinking about it..It seems unfair just to compare it to comic book games alone. From the demo it defiantly seems like one of the better game this year..so far.

Im going to painfully pass up Shadow Complex and make this a day one purchase...

Gamesradar declares that Gotham/Arkham is the new "Rapture" in terms of design and immersion, while also stating that the game is easily the best use of the Unreal engine.
Oh, and Gametrailers just gave it a 9.0.
Okay, someone explain to me now why Eidos did that "high scores nets you an exclusive" campaign with print magazines?

As for good comic book games, I'd nominate four more:

-"X-men legends" and "X-men Legends 2" were the precursors to M:UA and were pretty great, specially XLII.
-"Ultimate Spiderman" on the PS2/Xbox was really damn good, and it felt great that they actually made it a tie in with the comics of sort.
-"X-men: Mutant Apocalypse" for the SNES was a great beat em up by Capcom.
-"Spiderman: Web of Shadows" is a bit flawed (ugh, that spidey voice actor and the repetitive encounters/missions), but is easily the greatest non-movie Spidey game; hell the aerial/web combat alone is fried gold.
Mutant Apocalypse was AWFUL. I tried to replay it a year or so ago on an emulator and it's really, really bad.

If you use detective vision in the demo where you knock out Zzsaszz (or however you spell it) there's a room it looks like you can get to in the full version. You can see through the wall where the "weak spot" is and the designs in the other room supposedly show that it's Maxie Zeus' room. Take that with a grain of salt since I didn't know who Maxie Zeus was until I tried to look up information on the room when I found it.

Yeah, I've been wondering about that room...

And I just read Clayface has a cameo!

Also read that the Riddler is never seen, he just taunts Bats over his ear piece, which is a little dissappointing if true. Still, no Mr. Freeze.

So far it's been true about the Riddler. He appears over your earpiece, laughing at you for some weak encrpytion on your headset that he was able to hack into. He's laid out these tasks/collectables for you to do/get.

There's also this really weird 'Spirit of Arkham' collectable. It's some disembodied voice that slowly tells you the history of the place. I'm not sure what's going on with that.

I will say though that combat doesn't change that much. There are extra moves to get but they're relatively minor upgrades.
SNES Batman Returns, people.

Also, That Genesis X-Men game has aged terribly.

Question about the Riddler: is his voice the same as from the animated series as well?
I want this game so bad. The demo got me excited, but all these positive reviews are putting me into overdrive. Day one purchase for me.

I can't really say given that I can't remember what he sounds like there. It does sort of sound like Jim Carey though.

The fact that a reviewer (and someone I know) specifically mentioned that the demo doesn't give a fair impression of the game gives me great hope, cause I guess I was the only one underwhelmed by the demo's gameplay --though I realized it was, almost entirely, a tutorial.
Picking this up Tuesday thanks to the generous reviews, also the fact that retailers are bending to Wal-Mart's will and offering it for $38.83 the first week. (In ye olde Canada)
Neversoft's SPIDER-MAN game, which was the first 3D, free-swinging Spidey game, was pretty good for its time. (I played the shit out of it on Dreamcast.) Although the wonky camera would likely be considered unacceptable today.

I am foaming at the mouth to get ARKHAM on Tuesday.

Eh....kind of. The demo is arranged specifically to show you the two 'modes' in the game. Which is the combat and the stealth. You get upgrades for both but the fundamentals don't change.

In reality, the cutscene that ends the Demo actually comes BEFORE the final room in the demo. If that makes sense. They've just arranged it as a 'showcase' I guess.

I will say though that if you have major issues with the demo I can't see that really changing with the full game.
Is there more environmental interaction in the full game though? After playing the demo a few times, I ran into some frustating limitations. It would have been cool to have been able to batarang all the lights in a room to scare bad guys, and then go to detective mode and beat the shit out of guys while they can't see.

Wait, someone's offering a cheaper price than Amazon? WHO?
I feel illness coming on. Possibly around Tuesday or so.

Actually, the place I pre-ordered it is downtown, and I work downtown. So maybe I can hold back the sickness until Wednesday.

Now that's high praise. And near unbelievable. Although if it's even 75 percent as good as BIOSHOCK in those departments, it should still make for an amazing Batman game.

Canadian Wal-Mart.
Well that leaves me shit out of luck. I guess I should stick with Amazon then.
Of course, I wouldn't buy it at Wal-Mart if it came with a free blowjob, so I'll stick with my overpriced pre-order.

No you can't. Which is annoying and I can't think as to why they didn't implement that.

I don't feel like it's as immersive as Rapture though really. I didn't quite get that from it. There is a lot of backtracking which I imagine will get annoying for some people.

On the whole though I do like it a lot, and the combat still feels great. You're essentially still pressing X to strike, or Y to counter. But later on you get to unlock instant takedowns which help add to the combat.

So far though the bosses have been variations on the exact same move. Boss runs toward you, stun then with you batarang, dive out the way and kick them. Rinse, repeat.

No, this time he's played by Wally Wingert. Supposedly his performance is "Show Stealing" according to... 1UP...? Or Gametrailers. Can't remember now.

Do you get the $30 gift card in addition to the $20 gift card if you're a rewards member or just the $30?
Just the $30, I believe.
On the Best Buy side of things: $10 gift card and Mask of the Phantasm/SubZero on DVD. I'd be nonplussed if not for the fact that I've already got $50 in rewards coupons to spend there.
Best Buy advert says that if you pick ARKHAM ASYLUM up on Tuesday, you get a $10 Best Buy gift card and a dual DVD of MASK OF THE PHANTASM and SUBZERO for free.

EDIT: Or what Justin said ...
I actually canceled my pre-order yesterday (I just remembered that I'd ordered Street Fighter IV used from GameFly). I may end up picking this up from Toys R Us if I can get the $30 off thing though (since I was planning on getting Uncharted 2 in a month and a half anyway).
It seems like all the reviewers can't stop praising this game. It makes me so happy because I've been looking forward to it all year. It just sucks that I'm not playing it NOW.

Best Buy Canada is giving away a free strategy guide with purchase too. I think on a limited basis. I believe just on in-store purchases as well.
