Most frightened you've ever been watching a movie - Page 4

I remember being scared during Salem's Lot when I was really little.

FUCKING PHANTASM.

I was at my cousin's place for a weekend, and they were showing back to back horror movies - Friday the 13th, some movie with a lot of bees in it (quite possibly The Bees), and Phantasm. I was freaked out when Jason lunges out of the water at the end of Friday, but Phantasm terrified me. Yet, like the first poster said, I could not turn away. I now realize I was fascinated, in an adolescent way, by something that could hold so much power over my emotions. This was like 1st or 2nd grade, and suddenly, all my creative writing exercises were clearly derivative of Phantasm. Balls with spikes, the tall man, etc. Had nightmares forever.

Here's more of a 'name this freaky movie for me' question/memory:

I was maybe seven years old. The teacher had gathered us all to watch a movie on a rainy day. There were knights, and damsels, and that's pretty much all I remember of it. Except for:

- A scene where one of the knights (at least, I think it was a knight) gets trapped under the surface of a lake, and pounds against it trying to escape

- A scene where a pretty woman turns into a monster.

Anyone have any idea what I'm talking about? I spent the remainder of the film, whatever it was, reading the sunniest, happiest book I could find in our library.

Sounds like Ridley Scott's LEGEND. Jack (Tom Cruise) gets trapped under a lake, and Lily (Mia Sara) gets seduced by evil forces and merges with a devil dress (or whatever happened in that scene).

Evil Mia Sara made me feel funny in my tummy when i was little.

Earliest memory would have to be the animated version of Roald Dahl's "BFG",it made me paranoid as fuck after seeing it.Even walking with my Mum or Dad in broad daylight i'd be constantly looking around buildings thinking that maybe there was a giant lurking behind them waiting to snatch me.It also didn't help that my Grandad looked like the BFG.

The Freddy Krueger character really got to me as a kid and this was before i'd even seen the films.I can remember thinking i had this dream where Freddy emerges out of the clouds and tries to snatch me but i think that actually happens in "Freddy's Final Nightmare"?I must have seen that bit dozing off cause it mentally scarred my brain.

Really?

That makes sense, as I've never bothered to sit down and watch Legend.

I'll have to add it to my queue now and see if it's the same film. Thanks for the tip!

As I was saying before in a different thread, I'm the biggest pussy ever and am always scared when watching horror movies. I'm also extremely squeamish. The two are a dangerous combination, especially when I know something is coming and it's going to be gross. Like the eyeball scene in May.

But the scariest movie ever, to me anyway, is The Exorcist. The first time was alright - I was pretty freaked out but I was watching it with a room fulla people during the day. Second time, I was alone in my aunt's basement on Halloween. Fucked my shit up for life. As far fetched as it seems, I think devil possession can happen and it freaks me the fuck out. In retrospect, I have no idea why I didn't turn it off if I was so terrified. I guess that's the thrill part of horror movies for ya.

The Exorcist had me terribly bored throughout the whole flick, but that spider walk... that's probably the best jump scare ever.

A lot of people say that. And it probably is. But still, I shit my pants.

Children of the late 70s may recall that HBO, still in its infancy, used to air several fucked-up short films to fill 5-10 minute gaps in their meager program schedule. My innocent 5 year old mind was not equipped to deal with these films, and one in particular has haunted me for over 25 years: a sliver of glass in some deep, nearly forgotton recess of my reptilian brain...
