I love The Thing and Halloween, they're both fantastically made movies but Madness works for me on a different level. I barely ever get scared by horror films and for some reason this one just hits me in the right spot - I've got a thing for apocalyptic and Lovecraftian imagery.
I also really love the ambition. It's such a weird out there film, one of those that and keep threatening to go off the rails at any point and yet Carpenter steers it perfectly, right up until that awesome ending. I do agree, though, that if there's a weak link it's definitely Julie Carmen.
