Ten recomendations for a newbie

I am not shilling chewers. It's that now I can access to comics. I have good memory but not enough to recap every moment I said "I should read that".

So, could you recommend me some classics? Besides Watchmen.
I will appreciate it a lot.
Scott Pilgrim
100 Bullets
Preacher
Fables
Y:The Last Man
Planetary (at least the first 2 trades)
I think Fables is very overrated.

Devin talked about Sleeper on the main page and I highly recommend it.

I second Preacher, Scott Pilgrim and 100 Bullets.

I would suggest also:

Sandman

Transmetropolitan
American Born Chinese
American Splendor
The Pride of Baghdad
Hard Boiled
The Spirit (try and pick up some archival material)
Fun Home
Persepolis
Ex Machina
Depends on what kind of stuff you're looking for. Superhero, crime, horror, etc.?

Regardless of what your answer is, I say Scud the Disposable Assassin. Casanova's good, too. They both sort of defy description in a lot of ways.
V For Vendetta (the movie blows)
WE3
Bone
League Of Extraordinary Genlemen
Kingdom Come
Invisibles

Definitely Second:
Preacher
Y: The Last Man
Fables
I always say it - Judge Dredd: The Apocalypse Wars.
Ok I'll pick a random selection from my bookshelf in no particular order.
1. The Dark Knight Returns & Year One.
2. Y the Last Man
3. Bone
4. Scott Pilgrim
5. Creature Tech & Iron West
6. Conan (new series from Dark Horse)
7. V for Vendetta, Top Ten, League of Extraordinary Gentlemen & From Hell
8. Hellboy & BPRD
9. Maus
10. Liberty Meadows
11. Black Hole

That's a wide variety of styles and genres there.

I agree with alot of the posts here.

American born chinese (is awesome)
Y: The Last Man (is fantastic)
Batman: Long Halloween (is a fun read)
The Walking Dead (only if you enjoy zombies and the first half of that series is pretty bad ass)
Hellboy (pretty much anyof em)
Scott Pilgrim (is a must)
Sin City (I just really enjoy the art)
Powers

No.

And "Starman" is a good read. The Omnibus collecting the first 17 issues is out, with the second arriving in February. There will be 6 in all and it's definitely worth checking out.

EDIT: Robert Kirkman's "Invincible" is also a fun send up of the genre, while still being a great superhero book.
Astro City
Black Hole
To me Fables reads like a Gaiman knockoff.

I also suggest Queen & Country. It's a pretty good spy series.

Superheroes first. The essential stuff let's say. But in the mix most of you threw there's some interesting choices. Thanks. Green rep for all of you.

Identity Crisis
Green Lantern: Rebirth
Green Lantern: Sinestro War
Grant Morrison's current run on Batman
Captain America by Ed Brubaker
Invincible

I picked this up a few weeks ago, reading it sporadically between Wednesday, and am down to the last couple issues. Very good.

Though I think its fucking ridiculous to call something in Omnibus and then have volumes.

Essential:

Watchmen
The Dark Knight Returns

Other Good Superhero Stuff:

Batman: Year One
Wolverine by Chris Claremont and Frank Miller
Daredevil by Frank Miller and Klaus Janson
Daredevil by Brian Michael Bendis
Daredevil by Ed Brubaker
Captain America by Ed Brubaker
All-Star Superman

Tried to keep this list to stuff that's pretty much unanimously seen as good. Here are some of my personal favourites outside of those...

Wolverine: Enemy of the State
Arkham Asylum: Living Hell
New X-Men by Grant Morrison

Let us know when you want to move beyond the superhero stuff. A lot of great stuff outside of that genre is already covered here, though.
I hated Daredevil by Bendis. Brubaker's run is great.
Batman: The Long Halloween
The Maxx.
Scalped above all.
Superman For All Seasons
IMO, don't read Watchmen/The Dark Knight first. Read them after you've read a lot of DC/Marvel super hero stuff.

The only heroes I'd add to the mix are:

Invincible
Marvel Ultimates

Other than that:

Preacher
Y the Last Man
Ex Machina
Bone
Hellboy & BPRD
The Invisibles
Oh yeah, and all things Grendel..
This may be sorta tangential, but did anyone like Earth X? It was one of the first comic books I got into. I thought the bold artwork with lots of blacks was fantastic (a precursor to my Hellboy obsession perhaps).
I thought it was interesting at the time, I haven't read it in awhile though.

Marvels
Superman: Peace on Earth
Greg Rucka's Wonder Woman run.
Dan Slott's She-Hulk run
John Byrne's Fantastic Four run

Non superhero-y stuff:
Criminal by Ed Brubaker
Stray Bullets (damn, I wish the rest of this series would get reprinted)
I love TOP TEN. Whenever I think of Alan Moore as some crusty curmudgeon, I just think of the sheer fun his entries in this series are, and I begrudgingly nod.
Going to try to mention some things not already mentioned, and stick to superhero books while we're at it. While I don't consider any of these essential, since most of those were already named, I had a lot of fun with the books and rather enjoyed them;

Ellis' run on the Authority
Rucka's run on Checkmate
Bendis' New Avengers and Mighty Avengers
Spider-Woman
Ms. Marvel
Brubaker's run on Uncanny X-Men

Oh, and I'm enjoying Ennis' The Boys. Hilarious adult superhero fun.

Besides that I echo pretty much all the choices said before me.
There are some awesome books in this list. I'll second the love for Bone and Invincible in particular, and add several dozen more to my own reading list.

I'm also in the early stages of reading comics again, and have found what has been a good resource for me as far as saving some dough on graphic novels if you're more interested in reading them than collecting. There's a site called http://www.sequentialswap.com/ that facilitates trading graphic novels between members. I've only done a few swaps so far, but they've all worked out without a hitch. So for the cost of sending one of my books via Media Mail, I get a spiffy new book that I haven't read in return.

This is a cool thread of interesting choices. Thanks.
For superheroics, "DC Universe, The Stories of Alan Moore" makes for a nice sampler platter. And Nextwave is frigging awesome.

Beyond that, Sandman, Sandman and Sandman.
The new House of Mystery series is shaping up quite nicely/weirdly. Also the first issue of Air was fairly good.
My two-cents for a good superhero title - Animal Man. I don't know if those ever got collected into trades, but it was a great fucking book.
I'm not going to exclude things that have been referenced above, so if I'm 'doubling up' just consider it an extra recommendation. Also, I'm probably in line with your enthusiasm in that I love films, and love select comics/graphic novels, but don't and never have been a big "collector." I have maybe one shelf of graphic novels at this point. So...

From Hell
V For Vendetta
Alan Moore's Swamp Thing run (this is AWESOME)
Promethea
Lost Girls
The Killing Joke
While I'm at it, just look up Alan Moore on Amazon and buy any and all of his work that you can. He's the best, hands down.

Preacher
Maus
The Dark Knight Returns
Batman: Year One

I picked Morrison's Batman, including RIP and It was quite good.
Now I am after Marvel Ultimates.
Later I will come back to pick the other Batman issues.
After that some Supes or more Marvel. Thanks again.
All Star Superman
JLA
Alan Grant's run on Detective Comics
New X-Men

I just read Morrison's The Coyote Gospel from Animal Man...It's great.
I didn't like quite much Ultimate X-Men but I started reading that for the Millar run.
Arkham Asylum is excellent although much of those ideas regarding Joker's persona were reused at Batman RIP.

Utraman, which New X-Men? (Morrison?)
Blankets by Craig Thompson is a great one for romantics.

Yah, Morrison, I still haven't picked up the last two graphic novels of his run (There's like eight), but I was loving what I read.

-X-men: God loves, Man kills
-Ultimate Spiderman
-Superman: Birthright
-Batman: The Long Halloween /Batman: Dark Victory.
-Hitman (Ennis again)
-Starman (a fucking must)
-Justice Society of America
-Marvel Boy (Grant Morrison)
-Iron Man: Extremis (Ellis)
-Nextwave (Ellis)
-Justice League of America (The Morrison run....Rock of Ages and WWIII are great)
-Avengers: Ultron Unlimited
-Avengers: Under Siege

There are way. You don't want to know about them. They're dark and disgusting, but there are ways.

Or you could download them.

I just ended the Morrison's New X-Men. It's great although some stories dragged a little. I had mixed emotions with Fantomex and I would had loved if he used him a little more a certain points. Emma Frost is one of the oddly good surprises. Before that I read Morrison's JLA and it was a blast I wish I had read this as a teen.

I just started with Y the last man and the excellent #1 made me came here and give thanks for the recommendations.

FROM HELL is really excellent, plus I just read "The Impostor's Daughter" which I quite liked.
I'm bumping this because I'd like to start reading comics again, so I'm interested in current titles, or stuff that's just ended/that I can catch up with in a few trades rather than 12 (like Fables, which I did love back in the day). I'm more of a DC Vertigo guy, and I love stuff like Planetary, Criminal, Gotham Central, etc. Right now I'm working my way through Scalped. Dig that.
So what are you looking for? More mainstream titles, superhero, or something else? I think the other thread (Best of 00s) is doing a good stuff of bringing up the really quality stuff to come out recently.

Jason Aaron is the goods. His mainstream stuff with Marvel isn't bad either. The recent Wolverine arc Get Mystique and miniseries Weapon X he did was pretty entertaining and his Ghost Rider is stuff is hell of a lot fun.
