Rogue Squadron: Worth getting a Gamecube for?

I'm tired of waiting for Tie Fighter, X:Wing, or [a real] Wing Commander game for the 360. I had high hopes for that anime space game. The demo was horrible.

I can get a Gamecube and both Rogue Squadron games locally for under forty bucks. Will I like the Squadron games?

They aren't sims, and the flight control seems odd when I go back to them, but they're decent games. There are some epic battles but some of it can be frustrating("blah blah blah is under attack! blah blah has been destroyed! Mission Failed!"). Rogue III still looks pretty good, but the on-foot stages are pointless button mashing shit, and often-times they pop-up halfway through an otherwise great flying stage.
Rogue III earns points for having the entire Rogue II playable in co-op(and only co-op) and having the old Wire-frame arcade Star Wars and Empire games as unlockables.

I may end up steering you wrong and you may end up loathing them, but for 40 bucks for a system and 2 games you could do far worse. Plus, contrary to popular belief, the Gamecube does have some good stuff on it that you can find dirt cheap now.

Whoa, I have got to unlock those old games in RSIII.

I enjoy the games, but I haven't played the latter very much at all. The first one has this mission with a downed Star Destroyer on a beach that is pretty awesome.

Rogue Sqaudron starts with you attacking the Death Star and somehow ups the ante from there. It's a fantastic game, but it's marred by some truly terrible levels in the middle section. There's a moment where you're going mano-e-mano with a Star Destroyer which should be fucking epic, but all you can think about is Wedge Antilles screaming at you about protecting Frigates.

But the Endor, Nebula and Bespin Missions make up for it.

I guess you didn't play its predecessors on N64 or you wouldn't be asking, but did you play LEGO Star Wars? I think it's kinda like the flight stages of the LEGO games in its mechanical simplicity, but on a bigger scale.

I would say very much worth it for RogueSquadron 2: Rogue Leader. Two tasks await the True Jedi: Get a Gold in the Battle of Endor with an A-Wing, and escape from the Death Star II in the Millennium Falcon.

WII plays gamecube games. Just get the game and a gamecube controller.

The games are a blast, though they play nothing like the old X-Wing sims. But they're still damn good, and challenging in an arcade-y sorta way.

Can't you just soil your shoes and walk into a Wal-mart and buy the PC Version of Rogue Squadron instead?

Hmm, now I want to see if this will work on Vista....

He might mean those two sequels that were Gamecube only, Rogue Leader and Rebel Strike. They were big improvements over the original Rogue Squadron.

One improvement being having actual battles in space.

Overlord, it's been exactly 15 hours since you posted this. Do you own these games yet? If not, why?

Wait, they're not flight sims? What the hell are they?

Been sitting in a deposition for seven hours discussing two paragraphs of a contract. Joy. I think I'll pick these up along with Eternal Darkness and RE4 (I love that game, despite the controls).

Get Chibi-Robo as well! I have the feeling that it's the perfect game for you.

Do not let these flickering white letters on a black background fool you: over here, I'm LOL.

They are arcade flight games. They are very, very simple compared to X-Wing/Tie Fighter. "A" button for lasers, "B" for missiles, etc. You can close the S-foils to fly faster, and you can give simple commands to your wingmates with the D-pad but that's about it. There's no energy management, no complex targeting, missions are very straightforward and the ships basically turn on a dime. I don't mean to tear the games apart or anything because they can be fun to play but they don't feel anything like the old PC X-Wing games at all.

I haven't played Lair, but from what I've seen it looks exactly like a Rogue Squadron game with dragons. So if you've played or seen that, it's a lot closer to what you should expect.

Thanks to Justin Clark and my bargain hunting on Craigslist and Ebay, my Gamecube, ridiculously hard to find [cheap] component cables, RE4, and Rogue Squadron II and III are finally up and running. I checked out all three games briefly last night (to ensure everything was working properly).

Initial impressions:

Hmmm....is it just me, or does Rogue Squadron II and III look better than 90% of the games I've seen on the Wii? Off the top of my head, only Twilight Princess, Super Mario Galaxy, and Resident Evil 4-Wii are in the ballpark/better. Hell, these Squadron games would be in the upper tier of Xbox games. Not as good as Conker: Reloaded (the best looking Xbox game, ever?), Ninja Gaiden Black, S.C. Chaos Theory, or Chronicles of Riddick, but pretty damned good.

And RE4 looks even better. In fact, it looks so much better on the Gamecube I'm kind of sad I played through the PS2 version first (although the lack of widescreen support does create some jaggy problems). Controls are still brutal to get used to.

All in all, for a cumulative total of about 45 bucks and a copy of Rock Band 1, I should be set for a while on retro gaming fun.

No, it's not just you, the Rogue Squadron games were miracles of programming in terms of graphics. Factor Five is like a team of demo programmers in that regard.

I believe FF is officially working on a Wii game (rumored to be Kid Icarus). It will be very, very interesting to see what they can squeeze out of the Wii visually, because it will likely be the best we'll ever see on the system.

A bit cynical, eh? I love it!

Stop me if I'm wrong, but weren't Factor 5 responsible for that N64 Resident Evil 2 port that somehow managed to cram every single cutscene from the PS1 game onto a cartridge?

Those guys spin straw into gold. If they're responsible for Kid Icarus, they're gonna make that console sing.

And imagine what would happen if they made a game where you control a flying dragon!

Stop! (It was Angel Studios.)

I don't know what the fuck happened with Lair. They're actually not particularly great game developers, but I would also guess they weren't familiar enough with the PS3, and it might really be a bitch to program for.

Fun fact, Rogue Leader was developed from scratch in less than a year.

I'm still amazed at how well Rogue Leader has held up. Six fucking years.
