Run Lola Run

This is such a terrifically structured film, it packs in so much energy during it's 81 minutes. From the opening frame, the film is off and running, that techno beat providing the film's pulse while Tykwer just throws every kind of cinematic device at the audience held together with great editing.

Franka Potente really knocked her performance out of the park, it rightly made her a star.

I also liked the way Lola interacted with those strangers while she was running, having their lives mapped out via photo's was a really novel concept.

A terrific movie indeed.

It is still one of a kind for German Cinema. And everything you say about this movie is true. I love the relentlessness of the movie. There is not even one slow moment in the entire running time. The way he blend different styles gives even Tarantino a run for his money.

The cast is overall terrific as well. Knaup, Petri, Rohde and Król are all shining given their supporting roles.

And Moritz Bleibtreu needs more praise and love thrown his way. Period.

ETA: Talking about the soundtrack Thomas D. and Franka Potente - Wish still fills some dancefloors around here.

Die Franka, das ist ne geile Saue.

True dat!

And I love that the movie is basicly a secret love letter to Berlin as well.

I think the only time the film stops for a breather, is when Lola and Manni both have those bedroom conversations.

I'm curious, would you guys consider this an action film? I always have, but I think I'm in the minority, even though the movie doesn't really let up at all with the exception of a few repeated scenes(the bed, Lola's father and his mistress).

It's certainly more "edge of your seat" and fast-paced than most conventional action films, at least.

But yeah, I love this movie to death. I still think the occasional digital video segments were a poor choice, but I see what Twyker was going for. This is still the best video game movie, even if no game exists.

Loved the part where the cops mistakenly let Lola go. Smart twist.
Franka Potente has never been better. Fans should check her out in The Warrior and the Princess as well.

I consider it more of a thriller. I really do like the concept of this film, Lola not giving up until the desired outcome is reached and bits and pieces from previous failed attempts filter through to help.

Great film. Really helped propel my interest in foreign film beyond just martial arts and animation. Visceral and stylish without sacrificing theme and emotion... a rarity.

Like the artsier version of CRANK.

If CHUD ever does a Best Movies 90 Minutes Or Less, this should be the number one pick.

To me, this is one of those wonderfully rare movie that are great but can only be done once. No other movie needs to exist that even remotely resembles it. It breaks rules and defies conventions in a way that (I've always felt) must be pure to work. It has to come from a place of honest experimentation.

This is the reason that I find Pulp Fiction so beautiful, and it's imitators so fucking frustrating.

One of the first foreign films I ever watched. One of my personal favorites. I own the soundtrack. Some of the best music ever.

Oddly enough I still haven't gotten around to picking up the dvd. I have this thing on tape.

I get what you're saying, but what about Sliding Doors? It has something of a similar device.

Haven't seen it. So it must suck or be gay or something. Either way, my points still stands somehow.

You do realize that there were other movies that came before that RUN LOLA RUN resembles, right?
Not very closely. What examples are you thinking of?

You do realize I conceded the point with a joke, right?

Either way, I'm interested in these other similar movies too.

You only need to look as far as Kieslowski's BLIND CHANCE/PRZYPADEK, which as an avowed fan of Kieslowski Twyker is (case in point: HEAVEN), sets up a few similarities that suggest maybe Twyker was honing his skills in that film with more than a few viewings.

Fantastic movie. I saw a few minutes of the dubbed version once. Yuck.

Franka Potente was so cute in this movie. Watch this with the Bourne Identity and you have the perfect Eurotrash dyed hair vagabond dream girl.

It was such a blast working at my movie theatre when we had Run Lola Run. It was the first and only time we had huge crowds for a German film. That wasn't about Nazis. And I loved that film to death.

Agreed. I was trying to show this to some friends who would only watch it dubbed, because they're assholes. One of the worst dubs I've ever heard.

Small nitpick I just wanted to point out. I remember the US release for Twyker's next film being called The Princess and The Warrior. Anyway, it was such an interesting move by Twyker. Smart to not try to outdo himself with Run, Lola Run and do something totally different. Great soundtrack too.

On a different note, I just started running regularly. Now I have even more respect for the physical demands Potente had to meet for Lola, Rennt. I wonder how much fat she burned making that movie...

I didn't like this movie.

It's been a while since I've seen it, and I don't remember why I didn't like it very much. I think it had something to do with the plot and the way the film was structured and some of the character connections.

Crappy post yeah, but I just wanted to take away some of the unbiased love in this thread.

Actually, the reason you don't like it is that you're an inhuman monstrosity with a mechanical pump where his heart ought to be that pumps not blood, but a black oily substance that burns any children with whom it comes into contact. How dare you, sir? Bad form.

That's okay, I don't like The Usual Suspects. We can be burned at the stake together.

Burn these witches! Heresy!

Seriously what is wrong with you people?

Hello? We've been over this. Inhuman monstrosity, mechanical pump, black oil?

I think they mention it in the commentary, but I noticed it before then. Not only is Potente running like a maniac, but she's wearing Doc Martens as well. If any of you wear them frequenty(I do), you will know Docs are not good for running. No padding whatsoever.
I hope they made some modifications to those Doc Martens... Poor girl.
She also mentioned in interviews that she specifically avoided training for the film, since she wanted to look like a regular woman for the role. So that probably didn't make it any easier.
As much as I appreciate her dedication to the verisimilitude of her character, that sounds kinda like a dumb move on her part.

But I love her anyway!
