Your most-listened to album? - Page 2

If your answer to this question isn't Appetite for Destruction, then it means that you like to wear a frilly skirt and lay there as many flaccid penises are draped across your face.

UYI I, not II

I rocks harder from front to back
Gotta say I prefer UYI I to II as well.

So many great songs. To be honest 'Right Next Door To Hell' is the only one I could do away with and that's not bad for a 16-track album. The finale to 'Coma' is mind-blowing.

There's never enough LTC love, they were an amazing pop band.

In The Aeroplane Over The Sea, Neutral Milk Hotel - Remains to this day the best album I've ever heard
Hollywood Town Hall, The Jayhawks - First band I discovered on my own, that felt like mine
Led Zeppelin II, Led Zeppelin - Got me through my youth when everyone around me was into Poison and White Lion and Steelheart.

This thread has become "Albums I listen to a lot", as opposed to "Most listened to album".

I'd guess that's because unlike you, most of the posters don't have a dream journal where they can keep a running tally of every single thing they do in order to get an exact count. Instead they are forced to guess and try to narrow it down to a handful of choices.

Yeah, but it's probably more fun to see a lot of albums as opposed to a one album per person limit. I was thinking, though, about how I've mainly been listing most-listened-to-ever rather than most-listened-to-recently or something. Again, I don't guess it matters.
London Calling or Doolittle. Probably London Calling.
Nevermind-Nirvana
OK Computer-Radiohead

And in the past few years, In The Aeroplane Over The Sea from Neutral Milk Hotel has begun to creep into my "most listened to" status.

Or it could mean that we actually have decent taste in music.

I just can't stand Guns n Roses. Axl Rose makes me ill.

Remember making fun of it when it first came out, but then giving in to it. You couldn't be on a high school sports team in the late 80's and not absorb Appetite & Dr. Feelgood practically by osmosis.
Yeah, I just missed that whole thing. I graduated in '82. I just missed getting into the whole John Hughes thing as well.

Although 2007 got off to a slow start, it turned out to be a great year for new music for me. Just a few of of my favorites from last year:

Battles - Mirrored
Radiohead - In Rainbows
Wilco - Sky Blue Sky
White Stripes - Icky Thump
Robert Plant and Alison Krauss - Raising Sand
Kings of Leon - Because of the Times
Spoon - Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga
Patty Griffin - Children Running Through

I continue to listen to all of these, but the surprise stand-out for me has ultimately been Sky Blue Sky. Much to my surprise, actually. Wilco is one of my favorite active rock bands overall, yes. But Sky Blue Sky's mellow, subdued mood caught me off guard. Certainly not in keeping with the tone of my typical favorite album of a year. So that one has been one of my most listened to albums from the time it came out to now. I play it even more than Yankee Hotel Foxtrot these days.

ETA: 2008 will have some answering to do if some new good shit doesn't start appearing out of nowhere soon.
I didn't know we could pick more than one.

Albums I played the living shit out of in my time:

Bowie - Diamond Dogs
John Cale - Fragments of a Rainy Season
The Smiths - The Queen Is Dead
Tom Waits - Rain Dogs
The Stooges - Raw Power
Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds - Your Funeral, My Trial
post #65 of 91
My most listened to album would also be GNR's Appetite for Destruction. Then again all of GNR's albums were in constant rotation for me throughout high school.

Other much-played albums:

Red Hot Chili Peppers - Bloodsugarsexmagik
Nirvana - Nevermind & In Utero
Faith No More - The Real Thing & Angel Dust
Nine Inch Nails - The Downward Spiral
Jane's Addiction - Ritual De Lo Habitual
Prince - Purple Rain
AC/DC - Back in Black
Pink Floyd - Wish You Were here
ELO - New World record
Yes - All Of Them
Alan Parsons - My own mix CD

OK...so yeah I'm old...lol.
No kidding. Those are among the first albums listed here that I actually know.
Tie

Wu-Tang Clan: Enter the 36 Chambers
Rob Zombie: Hellbilly Deluxe
Hmmmm its neck and neck among these...

Gomez - both Bring It On and Liquid Skin

Tom Waits - Bone Machine

Radiohead - The Bends and OK Computer

Nirvana - Nevermind

Peal Jam - Ten

NIN's The Downward Spiral, hands down. One of the few super angsty albums I overplayed the fuck out of in high school that I still listen to and find new things in.

Runners up: Faith No More's Angel Dust and Rage Against the Machine's debut, although I rarely listen to the latter nowadays. "The Seattle scene" got a lot of play as well.

Alice In Chains - Dirt : I was listening to Creed a lot and someone with a more accomplished musical taste than I had back then recommended this album. It just blew all the wannabe grunge-rockers out of the water for me. Them Bones, God Smack, Rooster, I could listen to these songs all day.

Faith No More - King For a Day... : I actually like The Real Thing and Angel Dust better than this album, but I ended up listening to this more. Songs like Evidence, Digging the Grave and The Gentle Art of Making Enemies and just the overall tone probably influenced my songwriting more than any other.

Cypress Hill - IV : I still consider this to be the best Cypress Hill album to date.

At The Drive-In - Relationship of Command : Probably the closest I'll ever get to a perspective changing album in a musical sense.

Massive Attack - Mezzanine : I put this album off for so long, but made up for it since. Genius.

ETA: The Offspring - Americana : How could I forget this. The album responsible for getting me into Rock. I know every second, every chord, every lyric on this album, and the best part is that I can still enjoy it today.

last.fm says Wincing the Night Away by The Shins... but I sincerely doubt it.

Nothing wrong with those pics at all. Yeeesh, I'm old too.

Recently, it's probably Afghan Whigs, Gentleman. Though Avail's 4 AM Friday is up there too, I'm guessing. That's a great workout record.

Ever since the advent of iTunes and iPods, listening to entire albums has fallen by the wayside for me. Mostly I listen to individual songs, and rarely do I listen to whole albums.

That's a great album! I need to rip that one to iTunes.

The 3 albums I still listen to at least once a week are

Zep - ZOSO
UGK - Ridin Dirty
Faith No More - The Real Thing

I really don't want to know how many copies of these CD's I've gone through. At least 4 copies of UGK, and I think 5 Faith No More.

Chiming in with In The Aeroplane Over The Sea to give it half a chance at overtaking OK Computer in this thread.

No, it means what I said.

The album I listen to the most at the moment is Springsteen's We Shall Overcome: The Seeger Sessions. The boxset I listen to the most is my collection of the complete Bach-Werke-Verzeichnis (catalogue of JS Bach's works).

I love some of your picks I will get into Waits & Cale with those albums. Or should I pick something else first?
I know it's the Beastie Boys, but I'm not sure if it's Paul's Boutique or Ill Communication. I think probably, over the last decade, I've started listening to Ill Communication more times, but I might not always finish it, because it's so front-loaded.

I'd say Rain Dogs is the ideal starting point for Waits.

Could you give me two more options to let say add to the chart?
Rain Dogs is the best place to start. After that, maybe go with an earlier selection (like Closing Time, Blue Valentine or one that I really enjoy, Small Change).

After you've absorbed that, give Swordfishtrombones a shot.
Okay, I'm making you a check-list broken down by decade, Feral Akodon. The numbers in parentheses represent priority order. The first five are essential if you want to know Waits, in my opinion. If I had to choose my three current favorites, I'd probably say The Heart of Saturday Night, Rain Dogs and Mule Variations. Sooner or later, though, you're going to need all of these, if not more. Of course there is the possibility you'll discover Tom Waits just isn't your thing, but that would just be ridiculous.

'70s:
Closing Time (2)
The Heart of Saturday Night (7)

'80s:
Rain Dogs (1)
Swordfishtrombones (5)

'90s:
Bone Machine (3)
Mule Variations (4)

2000s:
Alice (8)
Orphans (6)

. Same happened to me with Nick Cave. Thanks
post #88 of 91
Pixies - Surfer Rosa
Mars Volta - De-loused in the Comatorium
Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here
my line up changes every couple of years, but for right now it these
Purple Rain
Thriller
Rumours
The Joshua Tree
Oil & Gold by Shriekback
Madness, Madness
Full Moon Fever by Tom Petty
Big Science by Laurie Anderson
Soul Mining by The The , the M&Ms jingle isn't even my favorite song off the album.

Most of the rest of the stuff I am listing to right now is greatest hits stuff, or orchestra stuff.

REM - Automatic for the People
U2 - Achtung Baby
*When I saw this listed I was reminded of how brilliant it (and Gish) is (and no, I don't mean lyrically) compared to what that band currently going under the name Smashing Pumpkins is doing. I'd even argue, although a lot was lost by Machina, even a lot of that one kicks Zeitgeist in its flat, ugly ass. I usually try not to put Machina up on a pedestal against something else, but it applies here.

**As much as I love Jeff Buckley, it's crazy I don't have this one yet. I think I've got most of his other widely released stuff. Anyway, I'm going to have to remedy this by getting Sketches soon.

Also, Z-Man - no Pink Floyd on your list?!

LOL, but there actually were several times in my life when Floyd would have placed prominently on my list. I listened to The Wall pretty obsessively after it came out (when I was about 11 or 12), and when I was around 14 or 15 I spent a LOT of time listening to Ummagumma (although not the whole thing). And later still, I listened to Piper and Relics a lot. That was all a long time ago, though...
