Does HDNET dare to crop the movie to fit a 16:9 HDTV? Or do they keep the black bars? They'd better...

They do indeed keep the black bars. I DVRed this a few months ago, it's beautiful.

MGM HD and HDNET Movies are the only two HD movie channels that have never strayed from original aspect ratio presentations, at least in my experience.

It will hopefully hit Blu soon this is one film the format will help a lot more than others, I can only imagine the image in a bitrate with breathing room and the score in all itsuncompressed glory.

Love how Harmonica's theme drones throughout the entire movie but especially in the flashback reveal during the final duel - "Keep your lovin' brother happy." Not only was it against type for Henry Fonda, the character is the most evil Western villain ever.

I think I actually like this as a western more than "The Searchers" or "High Noon" even. Every minuscule step a character takes is blown into epic proportions by Leone - just captivating and tense like nothing else (Basterds comes close).

Edit: Thinking about that duel now, it's really something special. While most duels in Leone flicks build tension simply with stare downs and slow walks that one builds it with not only those tools but that flashback as well. Once the flashback is over, Harmonica just ends it in one quick blast and we're released from that slow motion vice just as soon. A-game all the way from Leone. Goddamn, I have to watch this movie again.

Jason Robards was never better than when he was miscast.

"What if there was a whole heap 'a 'why'? Round, yellow... rap 'em on a stone and they go... ding!"

Have you ever walked into a convenience store and be greeting by the soothing sounds of Morricone's OUATITW score? Because that's what would happen if you walked into our store right this moment, which makes us the best store... uh, ever?

If I was nearby nooj, I'd be going in to pick up a sandwich and a drink. Just so I could be greeted by some glorious Morricone from OUATITW.

How badass would you feel if you just happened to come in right as the guitar of the Harmonica theme kicked in?

I'd feel very badass. Then I'd go about getting my sandwich and drink, while walking in slow-motion. Probably creeping out everyone else in there.

This is pretty much my post Christmas movie now and I still adore it. Easily one of my favourite films and each time I watch it I'm completely blown away by one shot.

The flashback, right at the end, of Harmonica with his brother stood on his shoulders waiting to be lynched is amazing. I love that entire scene, but the initial pullback and reveal is just stunning and it's a gutpunch EVERY time I see it.

It has just come to my attention that the Danish Film Institute is showing a restored version of Once Upon a Time in the West this month. And I am only about 20 minutes away from Copenhagen. I will be seeing this on the big screen. HOLY SHIT. I can't wait.

Sir, mine is the very face of envy.

You better go.

Such an awesome movie! I love the artwork they used for the DVD cover. Probably one of my all time favorite westerns. Need to re-watch it one of these days since it's been awhile.

Oh, don't you worry...there is no way I would miss this. They're showing a bunch of great movies there this month, including La Dolce Vita and a ton of Kurosawa, but unfortunately the subtitles are all in Danish. This one, however, is an absolute must see for me, especially considering it's a restored 35 mm print. GAH! I'm overwhelmed with excitement right now.
