Biting The Movies

(Growing up, or as an adult) Has there ever been an aspect of a performance, or something a star did you thought so cool, intentionally or unintentionally, you imitated it in real life? Did you ever start dressing a certain way/ or using a particular product because of a movie?

For me, growing up, I was an only child (no older brother role models). So I did this more than I care to admit. Mostly with mannerisms and way of talking. (River Phoenix circa '88; Christian Slater; the bomber jacket look from Costner: Andrew McCarthy was a big influence too-don't ask me why)
Fashion-wise, in college, Matt Dillon from Singles & Ethan Hawke were an influence.
Oh, and I'm pretty sure I didn't smirk before Moonlighting.
If I'm the only one whose done this, hope it doesn't make me crazy!

DIE HARD is not the only reason I started smoking cigarettes. But it's up there.

I blame Mickey Rourke!

I never imitated him but as I child I thought McFly walking backwards was cool.
I still swear that Willis smile is cool. In my late days I will star drinking a little as The Dude Lebowski.

Last Tango in Paris taught me to really appreciate butter.

When Scrubs first started I had a brief time when I started doing the Redford-in-The-Sting/Dr. Cox nose itch when I was annoyed.
After NIGHT OF THE CREEPS, I barked "Thrill me!" for years. My Tom Atkins man-crush was well underway.

(Also note, employing the Mr Miyagi friction-action palmrub just before giving a woman a shoulder massage will have a positive effect.)

After The Rules of Attraction, a film I should probably not be imitating, I did say "rock and roll" all the time just like Van Der Beek did.

I can't honestly think of too many. I do the teeth thing from Top Gun but that's steeped in irony.

I elongate my syllables. That's my tribute to Dr. Cox.

Right after KALIFORNIA came out, a friend used to do a imitation of Brad Pitt's Early Grayce at inappropriate times (especially the phlegmy snort). "This ain't Lucky Lager" was part of our lexicon.
Not quite the same thing(at all).

But when I'm talking to friends online and I'm annoyed with something I always type "Hurm" which I got from Watchmen.
After doing countless imitations of Heath Ledger's Joker voice, I now sound like Dominos Pizza's "The Noid" fighting the shittest of hangovers.
Me and my friends use "That's a bold statement..." complete with Travolta inflection, pretty often.
I imitated Daniel Day Lewis from There Will Be Blood for a long time. It caused me to lose all my friends.
Hudson from 'Aliens'. I've gotten good mileage from his panic-breakdown in appropriate (and inappropriate) situations.

End scene from First Blood when Stallone flips shit.

I'm deeply saddened to admit I talked in Waynespeak with most of my buddies for about a year after Wayne's World was released. I cannot articulate how deeply that makes me cringe, but if our 15/16 year-old selves didn't make us cringe, we'd be doing something wrong.

I also wanted to be Ralph Machio when I first saw Karate Kid, and even fantasised that the old chinese dude from our local takeway would pull a Myagi, see my potential and ask me to begin training with him. It never happened.

LOL!

I totally hear you.

I definitely did the Wayne's World mimmicking back in the day. I also did the "rock n' roll" from Rules of Attraction. I definitely say D'oh whenever I stub my toe or do something else equally stupid.

I've been known to break out a "Maybe you haven't been keeping up with current events, but we just got our asses kicked, pal!" in relevant situations. I'm a South Carolina alum, so I get to use it at least once every Saturday in the fall.

I do this cold, calculated, Daniel Craig-ish "No," after watching Casino Royale. But nobody ever knows it's supposed to be from anything. It's just for my own pleasure.

I sometimes say mundane things with utter gravitas in Bale's Batman voice. Mostly to make fun of Bale.
Also, I have a recurring habit of saying "You, stop multiplying" when arguing with someone (or trying to get the attention of someone who just won't shut up.)
When I was like 16 I thought I was Chow Yun Fat and tried to slide backwards down the stairs while shooting double play guns. Later, this move would be emulated with far, far greater success in A Low Down Dirty Shame.
I always stole catchphrases as a kid and I admit to sometimes channeling character mannersisms for the hell of it. Like I shouldn't have channeled Daniel Plainview when talking to my travel agent. Not the best idea.

After becoming obsessed with Kevin Smith via Mallrats around 9th or 10th grade I started dressing like Brody Bruce - brown corduroy jacket, longsleeve shirt under shortsleeve t-shirt, unkempt hair, etc.

Luckily I grew out of that phase (and don't really even like Kevin Smith anymore) but I do still wear the jacket sometimes just because it's a good jacket.

Wow, I've honestly been thinking to do this exact same thread the past week or so. Good one!

Denzel Washington always scratches his face with his thumb facing away from him in Crimson Tide. For some reason, that stuck with me and now I do it all the time. I've never noticed if it's something he came up with for the character or if its a Denzel thing.

You've abandoned your boys?

He even built a bowling alley in his house to make new friends, but he always got too into it.
Probably any Jim Carrey 90's catchphrase, including, but not limited to "Allrighty then!", "Ssssmoking!", and of course, "Bumblebee ah tuna".

My brother and I used to do a couple of lines from Three Kings. If for whatever reason one of us said, "What's happening!?" the other would say, "Accident, stay cool."

Then, I can't remember how this line ever came up, but we also said, "What if this was you without Kevlar!?" too.

With another friend, I used to randomly say "Spooner!" the way Will Smith introduced himself in I, Robot. It was just an odd name.

Then another one from The Ring. With the same friend, we'd always creepily whisper "Daddy loves the horses..."

After seeing Reservoir Dogs in the 90s i started growing a goatee because i wanted to look as a cool as Mr Pink.
Yeah yeah, i know.
My friends and I could start a quoters anonymous help group, we do it so bad. I won't get too far into it, so as not to open myself up to ridicule as much. Though, I'm not sure if quoting is what the thread means, but I can tell you, it is certainly socially awkward around people who have no clue what you're talking about when you spit out random Big Lebowski quotes.

One thing I will openly admit to, most of my friends and I say "d'oh" a lot when something stupid happens, but we don't just imitate Homer. It actually has come to the point where we just say it in our normal voices. D'oh.

I remember I was 13, 'Independence Day' had just come out and for about a month or two afterwards, I would walk around with a pretzel hanging out of my mouth like a cigar and if anyone asked, I said it was my 'victory dance'.

After having watched The West Wing for many years, I put on jackets and coats the way Martin Sheen does, that swoopy over-the-head method.

When Marty rolls down the embankment at Lone Pine Mall and gets half up to watch the DeLorean jump to 1955, I thought he looked so cool half crouching with that out-of-breath look on his face - tryed to emulate that as often as possible as an 11 year old.

I don't fall down embankments alot as a 34 year old but if I did I'd still get up looking like that.

Michael J Fox had the best manarisms ever when I was a teenager.
I stole Seth Rogen's laugh from Knocked Up only because it's slightly less grating as my real laugh.
I occasionally laugh like Phil Snebben from Harvey Birdman. "HA HA! Body in a wood chipper!"
I'm not sure what "biting" the movies means. Is that a pop culture reference I'm just not getting? Do you mean biding the movies?

11 year old me thought the same thing.

I rocked the vest, T Shirt combination of Ferris Bueller too.

And I am also ashamed that I occasionally spoke in Wayne speak my freshman year.

These days I'd have to say that The Wire speak has entered my vocab. Whenever I need to find out if somebody can get a favor out of another person I ask them if they have "suction" with that person. I've also used "It's all in the game" and "Shiiiiiiiiiiit"

Can we all agree that when we've worn a dinner jacket we've all had a James Bond moment?

At leaste looking at yourself in the mirror and sizing yourself up as Bond - even (and I include myself in this) you know you look nothing like Bond.
I still do that "OK let's ride" (complete with tone, brooding pose and hands thing) Nic Cage does in Gone in Sixty Seconds.

...Uh, for fun, yeah.

But the most I use? Undoubtly Rickman's casual humming of Ode to Joy in the elevator in Die Hard. Wherever I'm waiting, lost in thought... whenever. Confuses a lot of people around, actually.

When I am with my friends it is a Super Troopers quote-tacular. In general terms though if anyone say's "That'll happen" I always follow up with a "That will happen." If someone is discussing something and I enter the convo in the middle I typically break out "Wait, so the local cops are selling Afghany grass to the Canadians? Assholes."

It's a hip-hop thing. "Biting" is when a rapper uses a verse a rapper had used previously in a different song with almost the same cadence and everything. Means "stealing", basically.

Something has always struck me as vaguely humorous about the opening shot in "Predator 2" -- the flyover of L.A. with the superimposed title: "Los Angeles - 1997."

So now when I'm watching a movie at home and there's an establishing shot of anything, I'll announce, "Los Angeles...1997."

The biggest influence on me getting into motorcycles was Arnie on the HD Fatboy in T2.

I also have a habit of taking any jacket (works best with a suit jacket) off by shrugging my shoulders and letting it slide down my arms. Yes it probably looks dumb by the way I described it.

Quoting various things all the time. My most obnoxious one is when I'm telling someone to get on the gas while they're driving, I always say "punch it Chewy".
"Your wacker than the motherfucker you bit your style from."
Hey! I say "Punch it, Chewy!" That's my thing that I say! Oddly though, I ended up saying it, not because of Star Wars, but because of Jersey Girl. When Affleck's daughter tells him to start the street sweeper.

Oh Christ there's no fucking way I'd know that. I'm so white I don't buy ketchup.

ETA: Thanks for clarifying though.
