I think it's a newer app so they're still adding places by the day but they already have a bunch in there.
I still use UrbanSpoon.

I also got a lot of medical flashcards on the phone, so thats helping me study as well.

Some other random things:
TV Guide - Cause I'm just too lazy to hit the menu button and find whats coming on, it has a nice search feature so I know when to turn the boob tube on.
Pdanet - Turns the iPhone into a wireless tether.
Broadcaster - Stream live from your phone.
Unblock Me - Just a time killer and to keep the brain moving
gPush - Very strongly recommended for gmail users. Puts up a push notification screen every time I get a new msg.
iRwego - Okay so it plays the Mario theme, but when you jump it makes the Mario jump noise. This is pretty fun to show off at parties.

Two new (to me) ones:

Words With Friends (Free): Multiplayer scrabble over the net. My username is Space Lobsters. Add me!

I Am Choking: The (unintentionally) funniest app ever. Make sure your sound is turned on and up.

Bludzee (Lewis Trondheim daily comic thing about a cat. it's surreal. there's a free version which comes with a month or so of updates, you then have to buy every month after that for 99 cents each. I think it's worth it)

I've been digging the Redbox app. I can reserve a movie from my phone, and pick it up later in the day. This really helps so I can see the inventory of a particular Redbox, and don't have to drive over there and find out they don't have what I want.

The LOST trivia game is also worth the money. It's highly addicting. Just like the Zombieville USA game and Blackjack. My girlfriend's gotten hooked on playing Blackjack.

Really thrilled that Squaresoft is finally releasing classic Final Fantasy titles on the iPhone. I know I'm a minority, but I vastly prefer the turn-based RPGs of yore to the button mashing action-based RPGs these days. The iPhone is a perfect platform for these types of games. Parts 1 and 2 are available now, hopefully they sell well enough to keep releasing the rest of the library (I bet they could even get 7, 8 and maybe even 9 running on a 3GS).

Square is also releasing a new RPG called Chaos Ring that looks pretty sweet. With any luck, they'll make some iPhone specific Final Fantasy games in the SNES style (i.e. Final Fantasy 4 - 6) for those of us who HATE the direction that the franchises console titles have taken.

Some apps I don't think I could do without these days: Bento, Awesome Note, JotNot, What'sApp, Stanza, Dragon Dictation, Comic Zeal, Pocket Informant, GoodReader and Mindnode.

I'm hoping that by the time my 3GS is ready for the grave, Google's Nexus One (or whatever version they'll be up to) will have just as good a selection of apps. Android looks like it's really coming into its own. The Nexus is the only phone I'm jealous of, what a sweet looking screen!

FF1 has been a top selling game app since its release, so there is the hope for IV and VI.

They have released the original Broken Sword game as an App and it is fantastic, the touch screen is perfect for it.

Im digging the hell out of Sketchbook by Autodesk. Very sensitive, I'm surpirsed the amount of detail that can be done! that and it lets me sketch on the go.

Has anyone tried the app called Line2? If you have an iPhone, it adds a 2nd line to your phone, and will use WiFi to connect. Which also means...if you have an iTouch instead, you can use this app to make calls with your iTouch using WiFi.

David Pogue did a pretty good article on it in the NYTimes.
As of right now, Line2 is not accepting new users.. so I guess it'll be awhile before I can play with it. Then again, I really have no need for it personally but for 99 cents, it's a bargain.

Is that a giant middle finger to Google or a giant fuck you to AT&T right before Apple jumps the old exclusivity ship at the end of the year for carriers that can actually provide voice service to their product?

Pacman and tetris are faces of mine. The wife just downloaded me me an app that plays a different flieshman supean cartoon a day, loving that. Still getting used to the keynote as you can probably tell.

That implementation demo was pretty awesome. So does that Sam and Max game.

Jesus, Apple, why don't I just set up a direct debit on my checking account.

ETA: Skype, just became all the more awesomer.
So Apple just told devs, "yeah, that ad money, we're going to take some of that too." Nom nom nom nom.

ETA: And Apple just the funbomb that multitasking will only be on the 3Gs and later models and iPod touch (3rd gen). Suck it, 3G and Edge.
Well I guess its time to upgrade, I've been using my 3G for a while. If the iPhone HD name is true, it might be pretty hard to resist.

As a developer (you'll see something soon hopefully), the ad revenue thing sucks.
I mean, the 3G will be three generations old by the time this OS is on phones. While I don't relish upgrading from my 3G to whatever the new one is, I kind of get it. The last thing I want is an iPhone that operates as sluggishly as most android handsets.

SO glad I went with the 3GS instead of the 3G back in February.

Due to Cthulhu rising in Iceland, Lonely Planet is giving away free city guide apps for some European cities that usually cost between $10-$15. Here's a list of cities available. No idea if these are actually any good.

Gizmodo apparently found a fourth generation iPhone prototype. The article seems pretty legit. Check it out here.

been trying to get the mail app on my ipod to sync up to my mail so I can send the TOON FX app paintings I've done to myself via email. I've followed these step by step instructions but it still doesn't work.. any ideas?
Hey, has anyone converted an MP3 ringtone to the iPhone? I followed the steps I found online, which was basically converting the tone to AAC, then re-naming it .m4r, then drag it to your iPhone. I did all this, and in iTunes, it shows up under "ringtones", but when I open a contact and edit the ringtone, the song doesn't show up in the list. Any help?
I don't know how to do it manually, but I have had a 100% success rate with this little $15 app called iToner.
I've never had a problem using audiko.net.

Wow, that worked. I did pretty much the same thing manually, but it wouldn't work. "Converting" it with that website did. Thanks!

Ah, but that doesn't work for message alerts. Hmmm...

I just got an app called Forum Runner, which supports vBulletin and some other forum types. I was pretty bummed that you can't add any forum you want.. each forum needs to install a free extension on the back-end to work with the app. I wonder if there's enough interest if we could get that installed here. It would make using the CHUD forums so much nicer on an iPad, iPhone or iPod Touch. It's kind of a pain in the ass just using the browser.

If you're talking about text message alerts, for some idiotic reason you can't customize those on the iPhone without jailbreaking. I tried to do it about a month back and was amazed to see that you only have the option of their 8 or so tones. I'd hoped the upgrade to 4 would include this, but it didn't. My geeky Monty Python and the Holy Grail "Message for you sir!" will have to wait.

Get the McSweeney's Application! For about $6.00 it downloads short stories, music videos, readings by authors, and songs daily straight to your iPhone. By far my favourite app.

Hmm somebody should put this in the chud iPhone app...

Jailbroke my iPhone 4. Now using it as a wireless hotspot for my iPad. Essentially have an iPad 3G now and don't have to pay AT&T or apple a dime extra. Horray!

Wonder if Nick would be willing to have the Forum Runner extension installed on the CHUD Forums server. I actively avoid these forums when surfing on my iPad or iPhone, it's just too cumbersome with mobile browsers. If I could access these forums with Forum Runner, or if CHUD had an iPad specific app, I'd be here even more often than I am now... though that may be seen by some as an argument AGAINST having it installed.

Oh, and anyone using an iPad/iPhone/iPod Touch really owes it to themselves to check out Atomic Browser. It kicks the ever loving piss out of Mobile Safari in every way imaginable: tabbed browsing, ad blocking, passcode locking, themes, tons of customizable options, and the ability to spoof other browsers. At $0.99 it's a steal.

Whay app are you using to create that wifi hotspot? I assume it's in Cydia? Was it a free or paid app? My iPad is Wi-Fi only, couldn't justify yet another monthly bill.. especially to fucking AT&T. I almost wish I could cast a Drag Me To Hell type curse on that entire fucking company.
There's a new version of MyFi. It's $20 (previous version was $10. I think you can still use that version if you have a 3g or 3gs? Not sure). It's on Cydia or RockApp. Right now I'm using a free trail on it. But I'll pay for it when the trial is over. 20 bucks one time vs 30 bucks a month for a 3g ipad, or however much AT&T charges for tethering (oh tethering that can't be used on the iPad btw). It's an easy choice.

Well with the new CHUD launching in September, I've asked for some background changes that will allow for easier mobile browsing, and they're needed for the app as well (actually the articles are displayed in HTML in a browser, so does that mean this mobile version could be accessed through a broswer????*). Also since the iPhone 4 display is much higher, an app coded for it should run at nearly full screen on the iPad. Of course as usual I can't promise anything on the app yet since its features are always in a state of flux and certain priorities should be met first (the app has two phases, the most important is viewing the articles in an optimized way that you couldn't do through the browser, then forum integration (which might be a new forum) with a bunch of goodies we have in store)).

*yes I know the answer to that question.

Sorry to derail the thread, I do have a dedicated iPhone app thread, so any requests can be posted there. I should post an update about the progress, because the app has transformed quite a bit (tap gestures, skins, a whole new navigation menu & rotational view to just name a few caused slight redesigns).

Back on topic. Angry Birds is too addicting.

What repository is it in? I'm searching Cydia right now and coming up dry. I'm going on a Google scavengar hunt for it right now, but I'd be happy to have some good repositories to add if anyone has any good ones.

Whoops, never mind, I just installed RockApp and see MyWi on the intro page. Still game for good repositories though. The only repo I've added to the defaults thus far is http://cydia.hackulo.us for the security tools and Installulous. I like to try a lot of apps before spending money on them. Lord knows how many times I've been burnt by bad apps, and I've probably spent at least $500 in the last year on apps alone.

I didn't realize CHUD was having an iPhone app worked on, that's cool. I don't have an iPhone 4 though, only a 3GS and a wifi iPad. If the resolution is good enough for 2x mode on the iPad I'll be happy, but most things in 2x mode look horrendous and are mostly unusable.

I still think ForumRunner would be good to have on the back-end since it works with Android as well, not sure about Blackberry. The mobile space is where it's all going, it'd be smart for most websites to have a roadmap for reaching that market.

960-by-640 - iPhone 4 display
1024-by-768 - iPad display

Any app that is programmed for the iPhone display will look fine up-converted. In case some people were wondering, apps made for the iPhone 4 display still work on older devices, unless the developer restricts it to iOS 4.0, but that would be stupid.

Just curious, how's the Netflix app working?
Works better on a WiFi than 3G not surprisingly. I did watch about 10 minutes of "Archer" at work during my lunch break. I did the ol' "pause it for 60 seconds to watch for 5 minutes without buffering" thing. But it did work 100x better than trying to watch Netflix on my iPhone via PlayOn.
