2008 Holiday Game List

Thread Starter
A few people have already mentioned the number of games coming this holiday season, roughly meaning early Fall through Christmas. I thought maybe to better help all us Chewers pick out the right games, or not miss any gems during the season we could keep a running tally of what we're looking forward to. Might help some of us budget too.

Right now my list is as follows:

WoW Wrath of the Lich King (PC)
Viva Pinata: Trouble in Paradise (360)
Mercenaries 2 (360)
Spore (PC)
Fallout 3 (PC or 360)
Resident Evil 5 (360)
Left 4 Dead (360 for multi)
Fable 2 (360)
Little Big Planet (PS3)
Warhammer Online (PC)
Final Fantasy XIII (PS3)
Valkyria Chronicles (PS3)

There is also the GTAIV DLC coming in November as well.

I don't think RE5 is coming out this year. And I'm not sure if FFXIII is coming out this decade.

Adding to your list:

Rock Band 2 / Guitar Hero: World Tour (360 / PS3 / Wii)
Dead Space (360 / PS3)
Mirror's Edge (360 / PS3)
Prince of Persia (360 / PS3)
Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts (360)
Gears of War 2 (360)

I'm not positive on either of those myself, but I'm going by Amazon's release schedule. I plan on using their same day receipt shipping all holiday season since I'm a Prime member.

Does it look better than Conan? What do you think will let it stand up to WoW? I'd love to see some serious competition in the MMORPG market.

Addding to list:

Tales of Vesperia (Xbox 360)
Warriors Orochi 2 (PS2/Xbox 360)
Persona 4 (PS2)
Resi 5 is officially March 13 2009.

Interested in a lot of what has been cited so far, but right now I'm mostly excited that Yakuza 2 is released in less than two weeks. Also adding:

Little Big Planet
Chrono Trigger DS
Spider-Man Web of Shadows
Castlevania Order of Ecclesia

Wish Brutal Legend would come out this year, but it's doubtful.

Games on my radar in the Sept through Dec timeframe. All for the 360, 'cause that's all I got. This is based on the release dates at EB/Gamestop, so most certainly not all of these will make it in '08. At least I hope not, for the sake of my bank account.

Rock Band 2
Baja: Edge of Control
LEGO Batman
Dead Space
Guitar Hero World Tour
Fallout 3
Gears of War 2
Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe
Banjo Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts
Mirror's Edge
Left 4 Dead
Prince of Persia

It's certainly more colorful and closer to WoW's aesthetic (which WoW liberally cribbed from Warhammer to begin with). More stylized than realistic.

What will let it stand up to WoW? It actually made me WANT to quest. There are public quests that you can join in just by walking through the appropriate area, and your rewards are based on how much you contribute to completing the goals. You gain influence that you can accumulate and turn in for better gear, and you also have a random chance of winning loot from the encounter. And they're repeatable (as long as you haven't out-leveled the area), so you can keep trying for that loot if you so desire. And since it's public, it can't really be camped -- there were some folks in the beta trying to say their guild "owned" a public quest, but it's PUBLIC, so no one can be deliberately left out.

The PvP is an advanced version of the Realm vs. Realm found in Dark Age of Camelot -- you click an icon to join a queue to join a scenario in the area you're in, and you can run around and do other things while waiting for your slot to come up. Then it invites you in and you're off and running. If you're below the level of the scenario, you're automatically leveled up to the average level of the participants. You don't get the skills and equipment of that level, so you're still a little under-powered, but not cripplingly so. I played a scenario where the goal was to control two strategic points, so doing unleashing a catastrophic wave of magic that causes massive damage to the opposing side. This happened three times during the scenario, the last one giving my side the final advantage in kills so we won the scenario. It was a lot of fun even if I was a little out of my league.

That's the main thing -- it's fun. I'm really looking forward to launch.

The certain purchases:
Left 4 Dead.
Wrath Of The Lich King.
Spore.
Mirror's Edge.
Fallout 3.
S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Clear Sky.
Crysis: Warhead.

Probable purchases:

I wish I pirated games.

I haven't noticed Socom: Confrontation (PS3) on any lists. Is this just not on anyone's radar? I believe they announced a $30, or $40, price point for it and it comes with a mic as well. That bargain might make it worth grabbing. I was a massive fan of the original Socom, but the series completely lost me with Socom 3. Even part 2 lost a lot of charm of the original. I'm hoping word of mouth is high on this one.

My list for my 360 is

Battle Fantasia 9/16 (1st 2D fighting game on the US Xbox 360. It is great as well.)
Golden Axe: Beast Rider 10/14
Mortal Kombat Vs DC Universe 11/11

Namco Museum Virtual Arcade 11/4 a compilation of 30+ games for $30, which include Pac Man Championship edition, Rolling Thunder, Galaga 88, Xevious (one of my favorite shooters ever, I played it endlessly at Springdale Connecticut's Dairy Queen as a teen.), Galaxian, etc

2 Christmas games
James Bond 007: Quantum Of Solace
or
Death Track Ressurection (a new Full Auto/Death Race inspired racing and shooting game, but in 10 different cities. Currently has a release date of 12/31. If the date doesn't move upward I will be buying it after Christmas.

Are on my radar. I'm not particularly concerned about SOCOM. Could be a sleeper hit though.

PC:
Left 4 Dead.
Mirror's Edge.
Fallout 3. (maybe, I never finished Oblivion, and the last thing I need is another game I won't finish.)
S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Clear Sky.
Dead Space.
Spore
Far Cry 2

Wii:
de Blob
Guitar Hero: World Tour

I could've sworn there was something else coming out on Wii this year that I was looking forward to, but I can't remember what it was.

I can't decide if you have worse taste in movies or videogames. What are your favorite bands?
The LOTRO expansion, Mines of Moria. The most recent online update threw a helluva curveball at the end, and I can't wait to see where the game goes next. The expanded PvMP, new classes, and a new zone reportedly the size of Bree-Land - hopefully WB pulls out the stops on this one.
PS3:

Silent Hill 5
Dead Space
Resistance 2
plus RE5 in March
I love playing games, but since I just started law school, I have to prioritize and spend few hours each week playing.

Chances are I'll be picking up Mercs 2, Fallout 3, and Fable 2. I used to play WoW and I would like to start up again with Lich King, but I don't know if I could put in enough time to make that purchase worthwhile.
LitteBigPlanet show much promise and also i'm keen to play Resistance 2 and Mirror's Edge.
For the 360 it's all about these games (with Bold equalling a launch day purchase)

Fallout 3
Fable 2
Banjo-Kazooie

Mercenaries II
Infinite Undiscovery
Tales of Vesperia
Borderlands
Viva Pinata
Supreme Commander
Just Cause 2*
Last Remnant*

I'm still not sure about Dead Space

And on my DS I'm looking forward to the Dragon Quest ports.

*That's if these fuckers get released
Fallout 3
Dead Space
Left 4 Dead
Fable 2
Viva Pinata
Gears Of War 2
Mirrors Edge

Fallout 3 is the only for sure buy. Depending on money, the rest might have to be rentals.
How could I forget Left 4 Dead, that's going to be manic online.
I can't wait for L4D. I already have visions of putting it in at night with all the lights off and wreaking havoc with you guys.
I only have three games on my list for the remainder of the year:

Fallout 3
Rock Band 2
Chrono Trigger DS
Here's my list...

Star Wars: The Force Unleashed
Lego Batman
Silent Hill: Homecoming
Golden Axe
Fable 2
LittleBigPlanet
Fallout 3
Gears of War 2
Valkyria Chronicles
Banjo Kazooie: N+B
Left 4 Dead
The Last Remnant

If Golden Axe gets a shit review it's out, otherwise I'm in for a busy Christmas season. There's always a couple surprises as well but I think most of these are a sure-thing.
Alex Augustine, Generally, I enjoy listening to film scores, Huey Lewis and the news, the Doors, music of the 1970's, and Billy Joel. What is the matter with my taste in games. You mean you do not appreciate playing mainly Fighting games and superhero titles?
I definitely would consider buying...Blood Bowl, a no rules football game set in the Warhammer universe featuring teams of humans, Orcs, Goblins, Dwarves, etc, but it does not appear to have a release date yet.
The nintendo DS has waaaay too many titles that I want.

Dragon Warrior IV DS came out last week
Disgaea DS
My Japanese Coach
Tecmo Bowl DS
Lock's Quest
Castlevania Order of Ecclestia

many more to list..
Rock Band 2
Saints Row 2
Far Cry 2
Mirror's Edge
Fallout 3
Left 4 Dead
Gears of War 2
Just give me Overlord's list, but leave off GOW2. Hated the first one. Make mine Fable 2.

Great minds think alike.
I'm surprised more people aren't listing FarCry 2. After Fallout 3 it looks like the most ambitious title of the year.
Man, looking at that list, I notice two things: one, holy hell, is every game a sequel? Glad Mirror's Edge is keeping the original properties alive. And two...I don't have enough time or money for all of those. Curses.

Don't worry. Absolutely nothing will be released from March until September of next year, so you'll have plenty of time to catch up by buying used titles!

**Far Cry 2 isn't a sequel by any stretch of the imagination. They just want to use the name even though it's a completely unrelated game.
I forgot to add Saints Row 2. Too broke to buy it, but it's still on my list.

I'm glad I'm not the only one completely nonplussed by Gears of War.
Gears 2
Saints Row 2
Left 4 Dead

The only three I can reasonably afford, and the reason I've gone for them is they all have co-op.

If I had the cash though, I'd also go for these:

The Force Unleashed
Far Cry 2
Mirror's Edge
Fable 2
Fallout 3

But, like Overlord said, there will be plenty of time to play these in the new year. I'd also really like to add Rock Band 2, but have no idea when it's released over here.

Awesome, I just noticed that Left 4 Dead has been put back by a fortnight. That's actually helpful.
Good luck. Didn't they just release the first game over there, like 3 months ago?

Hate to break it to ya, but Fable 2 has a pretty incredible looking co-op engine too. Can't wait to play that.

I still don't get the fuss over Mirror's Edge.
Yeah, it came out in May... I think? I'm guessing it'll be about the same time next year.

I know Fable also has co-op, but I have to draw the line somewhere...

For starters, I'm just eternally grateful for anybody making a first person game that doesn't involve more motherfucking space marines.

I was looking forward to murdering your virtual family.

Justin: Seriously, the grizzled marine thing is getting retarded. I actually almost hyperventilated when I saw the main character in Fracture. I was just laughing like a loon when I realised that he was literally a checklist of gruff space marine design.

Bald? Check.

Scarred? Check.

Wearing Ridiculously Large Body Armour? Check

Monosyllabic? Check

But despite the break from shootiness does Mirrors Edge really merit everyone's interest?

You just stay the hell away from my virtual family.

I'm a bit apprehensive about Mirror's Edge being in first person, I think it may end up inducing motion sickness, but I'll wait to play it and find out.

I'm going to totally Conan the Barbarian the shit out of any virtual acquaintances you make.

Has there been any information released about Mirror's Edge other than that E3 footage?

There probably has been more released since, but I think that was the last footage I saw.

Apparently the game was making people sick, so they added a very, very small reticle/dot in the middle of the screen. For some reason that helps prevent vertigo-inspired motion sickness.

Is that new?
