80´s Draft: The ones that where left behind.

So another draft is about to end. (Thanks Kirby by the way!)

And while there have been a lot of stellar choices, some diamonds dug out and some plain weird picks the table is far from empty.

So lets put down what is still left from this decade and lets take a peak behind the eighties.

Star Wars is dead to Chewers, is it? Even fucking Willow got drafted instead of Return of the Jedi. Oh how the beard has fallen.
Platoon not being drafted is kinda weird.

I'm surprised Ferris Bueller's Day Off wasn't drafted in the bonus round.

Killed me not to find a spot for:

Rumble Fish

Bad Boys

Pope of Greenwich Village

Valley Girl

Nighthawks

Falcon & The Snowman

At Close Range

Barfly

The Big Easy

This Is Elvis

Akira was apparently not eligible. Diva wanted it in her first round but it was rejected by the refs.

Meaning of Life was my 2nd backup if Coming to America wasn't there with Trading Place.

I also had Starman, but it's the least of the Carpenters. If Escape from NY was taken from me, I had to retreat to Prince of Darkness or The Fog.

My favorite undrafted movie? The Name of the Rose

But I wouldn't have drafted it. My theme of the Death & Rebirth of a messiah had a couple options left. The best was Starman, but it's not my favorite movie. All of Me is an excellent movie, but Edwina Cutwater is not a messiah. Still, it would have been a light comedy, which my draft could have used. I almost took it Day 5, but Excalibur was smoehow still on the table. Another option was Pet Semetary, because it had the characters reborn, and in a theme subversion, they became hell demons instead of saviors.
My original list was probably 4 times as big. These were the ones that fit the theme (except Chariots and U2: Rattle and Hum)

Chariots of Fire
Child's Play
Explorers
Clash Of The Titans
The Evil Dead
Little Shop Of Horrors
Short Circui
Highlander
Masters Of The Universe
U2: Rattle And Hum
Willow
Legend
Atlantic City
Broadway Danny Rose
Burden of Dreams
Choose Me
The Dead Zone
Jacknife
Jumpin' Jack Flash
Miracle Mile
Never Cry Wolf
The Quiet Earth
Sherman's March
The Sure Thing
Testament
Three Amigos!
Trouble In Mind

That one is weird as hell. I was seriously eying it for quite a while but Fletch ultimately and rightfully took up my comedy spot. But it should have been picked at some point.

I'm Gonna Git You Sucka
The Living Daylights
License To Kill

For fuck's sake, people.

Speakin of Sucka.

Hollywood Shuffle
With you on NIGHTHAWKS, Elvis.

I'm so sad to see that I'M GONNA GIT YOU SUCKA was not drafted. I know the Wayans suck now, but that movie is right in league with the best spoof films of all time.

THREE O'CLOCK HIGH was quite tempting.

ACTION JACKSON: Craig T. Nelson is one of the most underrated 80's villains.

SUMMER SCHOOL: The Harm was never better.

From what you all are posting it seems you really had written out lists. That is a weird approach in my eyes. I just looked how the draft evolved and drafted according to what is left on the table that fits my theme, meaning spirit of the eighties, most.
The Rodney Dangerfield double feature:

Back to School
Easy Money
Was on my list:

The Name of the Rose (my backup for The Killing Fields)
Le Grand Bleu (the US release was shit, until 2000)
La Chèvre

And my favorite Cusack of the 80's; Better Off Dead...

I nearly went for Bloodsport, The Delta Force or Enter the Ninja, but if I go there I might as well go full frontal and go with Gymkata.
Biggest surprise absentee for me: Raging Bull

Left on my list:
Starman
Prince of Darkness
Christine
The Witches of Eastwick
Explorers
Body Double
Kagemusha
Legend
Sudden Impact
The Name of the Rose
Outland
Maniac Cop
The Dark Crystal
The Crazy Family (which I was surprised to see got a US release)
Choice of Arms
Coup de Torchon

Raging Bull was not eligible as well since it got drafted in the last draft already. Otherwise we should all refrain from posting here again EVA.
Same with Caddyshack I imagine. I figured it was ineligable.

And while it's not that great compared to Blazing Saddles:

Spaceballs

Oh and Police Academy.
Didn't remember it being picked in the 70s, but it was within the parameters of this draft, according to release dates.

edit: maybe not though. Wide release was December 19th 1980, but it got a limited release in NY on November 14th
post #26 of 267
Explorers, The Dark Crystal and Zelig were also high on my list. I can't believe I totally forgot about The Name of the Rose.
If somebody had snatched Clue up from under my nose at 9:00, I also had Dragnet all ready to go. Dan Aykroyd alone makes that flick.
Matewan
Brother from Another Planet
The Hotel New Hampshire
Hopscotch
Silverado
Raging Bull was part of the "Devin's Dream Era" draft since it opened in New York before Heaven's Gate did.
BULL did go in the 70's draft (Eileen, I believe). It had a New York release date that made it eligible for that draft, but not for the 80's one.

Edit: What was just said.
Here's my draft of leftovers:

Patti Rocks - 1987 - David Burton Morris

Broadway Danny Rose or Zelig - Woody Allen

From Beyond - Stuart Gordon - 1986

Day of the Dead - Georg Romero - 1985

Southern Comfort
- Walter Hill - 1981
Nobody took ROADHOUSE. Or TRANCERS. For shame!

EDIT-Shit. Southern Comfort. Of course!

I had twelve pages, two columns printed out. It's easier to know what's on the table if you actually have something on the table.

Was my backup for Commando...

Also:

The Mission
Highlander

The Karate Kid
Weird Science (Bill Paxton at it's best)
The Golden Child

And one I'm ashamed to not have picked it: Razorback
post #35 of 267
From Beyond was also one of my leftovers, as well as Dolls. I also had Laputa/Castle in the Sky, but I'm wondering if that wasn't a cut version that got released in the US.
Even though I did not like at all. I'm surprised no one picked up Less Than Zero on the back of Downey's performance. Or American Gigilo
post #37 of 267
Does anyone know if THE STUFF ever actually had a release in theaters? I couldn't find anything online about a theatrical release or box office total. Had the same issue with (the fantastic) SIEGE AT FIREBASE GLORIA.

The Stuff hit theaters on June 14th, 1985.

The same day as Prizzi's Honor and D.A.R.R.Y.L.
Back to the Future Part II and Fabulous Baker Boys were two I thought about but were ineligible.
I toyed with The Mission, but in the end I liked the score better than I liked the film.
Took River's Edge to fill the "Bleak teenager" spot on my roster, which I could have swapped out for Rumble Fish.

Took Dirty Rotten Scoundrels as my American Comedy, almost took Running Scared.

If the bonus round was a double feature, would have paired Less Than Zero with The Lost Boys for 2x the Gertz (or would have taken LTZ and Bright Lights, Big City. Nothig says the 80's like a big ol' pile of white)

Considered The Wall

*redundant post*
BLACK RAIN and JOHNNY HANDSOME were my biggest ineligible crushers.

Huh, must have been only a few theaters. No gross count at all on boxofficemojo.
The sequel to Kentucky Fried Movie.

Amazon Women go to the Moon.

And for the sheer fuck of it:

Cheech Marin's Born in East LA with Blue Thunder for the Daniel Stern double feature.
Mildly surprised Search for Spock and Voyage Home didn't make it.
Sucka was on my list, but I was trying to pick one film from each genre and I knew my comedy would be Eddie.

I stuck with American films, but had I diversified I would have chosen Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown. In fact, this is my first draft without Almodovar. I was thinking about Cinema Paradisio as well. It is pure schmaltz, but that's ok.
A seriously great flick I considered was SOMEWHERE IN TIME. Such a romantic, heartbreaking movie!

Thought Dickson would take FLASH GORDON.

IIRC, Streamline had a dub all ready to go in 1989, but never actually released it. So, yeah, it was ineligible.

Oooh, just remembered about Fright Night.
