East Bound and Down

The new Danny McBride/Jody Hill project. A brand new HBO series starting in early 2009, and the pilot leaked already.

It features Danny McBride as a total asshole of an ex-baseball pitcher whose career imploded due to his attitude, and thus goes back to his hometown to become a Physical Education teacher. Some of the staff are former classmates, and his former girlfriend. Hilarity ensues.

It's pretty good, with McBride doing what he does best and delivering some killer lines, some of them in the first 2 minutes. I liked that McBride's character is not just an asshole, and we get to see chinks in his armor.

"I gotta tell ya, I thought the blacks in Baltimore were bad, but turns out, they were nothing compared these fags you got in San Francisco."

Check it out.

When I saw this thread I thought it would be Smokey and the Bandit related. When I saw no mention of Burt Reynolds or Jerry Reed I was sad. Then I read it again and am currently excited. My heart can't take this.
I too was expecting some Bandit.
I knew what it was about, and I clicked it, anyway. I do hope they work the Bandit in somehow-- at least a joke or two?

I'll scour the Internets for this when I get home, and report back.

I've maintained for years that the Jerry Reed song can be played over a montage of nearly anything and make it awesome.

After the one-two of Danny McBride I got in the theater this summer (still missing FOOT FIST WAY), this sounds like a lock.

I have some of these quotes stuck in my head ever since.

"So, how does it feels to be playing for New York?"

"You mean Jew York? It's fucking great."
Any man who can sing a song titled "She Got the Goldmine, I Got the Shaft" is alright in my book. On top of that he is a really good guitar player and that makes him one of my favorite country musicians.

Back on topic, Danny McBride=awesome

Saw an ad for this on the season premiere of Flight of the Conchords and sought out the torrent tute suite. Probably one of the funniest series premieres I've seen in some time. It's like BAD SANTA the TV show.

Is it true you were in jail?
Naw babe, rehab.
Did you hurt yourself?
No
Coach Booth said that when he had his back surgery, he had to go to rehab.
Oh, well then yeah I hurt myself. I hurt my nose. *wink*

I'm not sure how well this will hold up on a week-to-week basis, but if its as strong as the pilot, then HBO has its next cult classic.

What's your other kid's name? Fucking Shrek?!

Can I wear the Scream mask? The mask from Scream?

I never quit, because quitting is death. And death is for pussies.

When does it start, officially? I need more of this.

And I want to see Mongoloid Mike at some point.
Feb 15th. Thanks, Martin, I google searched for this shit and could not find it.

The song's not in the pilot. The final shots of him on the jet ski with the herpes-ridden topless chick brought the house down. Him yelling through his anger and yelling his apology to his brother reminded me of Bale's "YOU'RE A NICE GUY! YOU'RE A NICE GUY!"

And now, CROSS POST!

Saw the pilot tonight and have to agree it was flat-out funnier than all of The Foot Fist Way. Great, out-of-nowhere jokes from top to bottom. Only question is does McBride's act have legs. Here's the shit they gave out at the screening.

I'm guessing you saw the definitive pilot, and I'm wondering how different it will be from the one saw earlier. The bulk seems the same, and so are the first glorious minutes.

It'll be interesting to see. I remember a lot of people asking the same question about The Colbert Report when it first started, but that show is still going strong thanks to Colbert's near-endless charisma.
As one of the board elders (meaning I'm an old fuck, not that I've been here longer), I remember when Jack Black was this amazing new comedic voice you wanted to evangelize about to friends. He always killed on Mr. Show, and when our stoned asses stumbled upon Tenacious D around 1997, it was some kind of revelation. Today I actually fucking groan when I see Black's name attached to something. I'm hoping McBride's "schtick" (meant in the best possible way) doesn't go down that road.
True, but Black became big towards the end of the Jim Carrey age where only one person was allowed to bring the funny. Seeing how we're in the Apatow age now, I'm sure we'll see the cast expand to allow for more than just McBride's brand of humor (and regular appearances from the Funny or Die staples; Craig Robinson and Ferrell are seen in behind the scenes videos.)
Good point. I think Robinson is the baseball player he strikes out in the prologue. I saw a promo clip with Ferrell in it.

Points also awarded for the joyous-in-tone cocaine montage in the pilot.

I remember loving Andy Daly going: "I'm an athlete too! I train for triathlon"

"I'm talking about real sports here."
It's in the clips I linked above. "I'm training for a triathlon, but you'd know all about that." "Actually, I wouldn't. I play real sports, not trying to be best at exercizin'."

God, it's even better than I remember.
Loved the pilot. So many good lines. McBride's delivery is fantastic.

"You named your kid after someone in Titanic? What's this one's name? Fuckin' Shrek?"
Maybe I'm not watching HBO enough lately, but if it weren't for the CHUD board I'd never know this was premiering in a week. Don't think I've seen a single promo, though the Conchords and Big Love ads never end. So, thanks much, guys. Those clips were beautiful.
Just hunted it down online and oh lord is it hysterical. I really hope this gets McBride more recognition than his 3 movies of 2008. I also loved the Spencer Moreno cameo (the kid who played Julio in THE FOOT FIST WAY).

"I'm a bulletproof tiger, dude."
thanks for the heads up guys, when I saw the tread appear, I was afraid I already missed the premiere.

Loving the fact craig robinson and gina gershon are in this.
Bump. Its on right now.
I would say that Jack Black got called on to do the exact same thing over and over, with the silly voices, and nonsense words, whereas McBride has already shown tons of variation in his persona. It all comes from a similar place, but you don't feel you're getting the same character, which is the big thing.
"I'm just playin'. I didn't cum in my pants."

Good series so far.
I could never understand why the (alleged) fans of MADTV apparently really enjoyed obnoxious characters being obnoxious simply for the sake of it. At the same token, much of the more "progressive" programs on Adult Swim often seem designed not to make people laugh, but to test their endurance of the absurd. And I've never been a huge fan of Will Ferrell and company's idea of filmed improvisational humor. It may be gangbusters on a live audience, but I think film needs a little more oomph than recording a scene 30 times and picking out the best bits.

It looks like there's funny stuff here, but I'm not sure I care to stick around to find it. Sometimes ugly is just ugly.

This is exactly how all filmmaking works.
ALL filmaking works like that? I mean, I humbly bow to your expertise, but I thought many film directors, like the Coen Bros., frown heavily on improvisation.
If I didn't have HBO I'd get it just for this show.
All filmmaking is based on doing something 30 times and picking the best bits out of it and editing them together. Improvised or otherwise.

Yeah, but improv or not, filmmaking is about doing several different versions of the same scene and choosing one version or mixing and matching multiple versions. That's just about the most obvious statement you could ever make but you should keep that in mind.

Edited to add: I accidentally typed the same thing as Devin without reading his comment.

So did several people I know. Isn't it odd how all the people who have good taste in comedy love McBride?

OK, fine. There's no way I can win an "all filmmaking" debate with an insider like you. I'll just say the "Will Ferrell Approach to Comedy" is pretty much hit-and-miss for me.

I think McBride is amazing, for what it's worth. Still didn't care much for the premiere.

Isn't this a mini-series?
So this is Danny McBride as John Rocker as a gym teacher? I don't know how I managed to miss that this exists, but I'm happy as fuck I checked this thread tonight.
"I need to remember that I am better than everyone else!"

Good lord, this is the greatest television show ever created.
Am I the only one who thought that was fucking brilliant?

It just hit on all levels. This was genius. PURE GENIUS.
I was a bit iffy on the first half of the episode, but it definitely got funnier as it went on. Pretty much everything after the "Blonde Ambition Tour" crack was gold for me.

I'm kind of amazed to see such an asshole-ish main character heading up an American comedy series. He almost makes Ricky Gervais's characters look lovable and cuddly.
Like the pilot a ton, but I have to wonder how much mileage McBride is going to get out of this character. I mean, so much of the show revolves around Kenny Power's ego.

Well, his ego does seem limitless.

And I loved the part where he confronts his family and awkwardly expresses himself while yelling.
Man that kid from Foot Fist Way has the most hilarious face.
I liked it. I wasn't blown away by it, but definitively liked it.
Looking forward to the rest.

I just recently watched the beginning of From Dusk Til Dawn to see John Hawkes as the cashier. Here for some reason I thought he was DJ Qualls.

He was the only one of the supporting characters to have a human reaction to Kenny. Everyone else (principal, old flame) were there as support for improv, taking all insults and staying in the exact same character. It's more interesting if their characters are more realistic, and I hope that changes. The ex-girlfriend was weird casting, because it seemed at certain times (her reaction to his PA address) she was trying to emote and not really getting there.

Actually, John Hawkes looks like a cross between DJ Quall and Eric Robert.

I took the principal as being a commentary on people who are in denial about their current state of affairs. Any time Kenny snapped at him, he made excuses for it and went about as though nothing was wrong. It's extreme pacifism.
I love his ex's look at the end where she's got that last call face of "I guess."
I also love his "I might have to change my pants. Just Kidding, I didn't come in my pants."

Danny McBride can channel the cowardly lion perfectly.
