East Bound and Down - Page 2

I was really tired when I saw this so it kind of started out slow for me but it hit the mark by the end. That slow motion/in his head stuff had me laughing so hard I coughed some very foul looking shit up.

The thing I love most about this is I know/knew people EXACTLY like Kenny Powers. They pretty much nailed the douchebag factor of local celebrity high school athletes who think they're still owed something based on what they did on a field 10 years ago. McBride's constant sense of entitlement and arrogance that seems to ooze from Kenny Powers is a dead on portrayal of how these people think.

You'd think it's a little absurdist, over the top performance but you'd be wrong. Anybody that grew up in a small Southern town that puts a huge emphasis on athletics among it's High School age kids (and younger) will tell you that McBride's performance is more realistic than some cartoon-like caricature. I don't think we should be shocked considering Mcbride's from Georgia and I'd wager he's got an understanding of what I'm talking about.

Laughed my ass off pretty much the entire time, but like 98% of the laughs came from McBride. That's fine for the pilot and maybe even for a couple seasons, but I could see people getting tired of the schtick. The only laugh I had that wasn't because of something McBride did was when the bar slut said, "Let's just say you make me sort of wet...in my pussy."

The principal is a means to McBride's comedy end and the ex is a black hole of acting ability (or at least for the pilot...she could get irritating after a while, I wager). But for my part, I'll religously watch this for as long as it is on the air because McBride will bring every episode.

Listening to his own motivational tape, "You're Fucking Out, I'm Fucking In" flat-out killed me.
Any truth that this show is six episodes and done?
Six episodes for the season, but they're willing to do another season if renewed. McBride talks more about it in his Onion AV Club interview.
I hope it's true. I don't see it sustaining itself for more than that.
I watched the first episode the other day and I just couldn't get into it. Maybe it'll get better with a little more footing but McBride's style just doesn't work for me as a lead. I haven't seen the Foot Fist Way but I loved him in both of the summer comedies last year.

Liked the bit about adding stuff that won't pass the censors, but makes the writers laugh. I do that at work too.
I didn't think the episode was all that great but I'm a McBride fanatic so I'll stick with it. The best moments were Kenny listening to his own tapes.
I love Kenny listening to his own tapes, but other then that I kind of hated it. Not that fact he's an asshole, or even unlikable. Just the whole black hole effect I think.
"Doing what? Giving Robocop a blowjob?"

Made me laugh.
Will Ferrell's Ric Flair impression was fucking awesome.
Any clue on where they are going with Stevie? I'm not sure if its intentional or not, but I keep expecting him at any moment to beat and rape Kenny.
I still can't get over Ferrell's version of Flair's WOOOOOOOOOOO.
hmm...not nearly as good as episode 1. but still very enjoyable
post #66 of 362
"Work, drugs."
I missed the first episode, but I really liked the second. I could see the character becoming grating if he doesn't develop some kind of heart though. I'd like to see the opposite growth of Homer Simpson. Taking a character that's just malicious and mean and making him oblivious and sweet if not thoughtful.
"I fucking hate that birdbath also. That's how the plague started."

Great second episode, but hated everything with Ferrell.
Yeah, Ferrell is too goofy and doesn't mesh well with the tone of the show.
I'm glad I wasn't the only one that thought that. When he was on screen it seemed like an SNL sketch.
Second episode was definitely weaker than the first, but hey, David Gordon Green!

"I did it for you, because I knew you hated that fucking birdbath as much as me."

Ferrell wasn't as funny as I thought he would be but McBride is totally killin' it so it would be hard to keep up.
I liked the second episode better simply for the Robocop blowjob joke, the rats makin' sex to birds bit and "Drugs. Work." I agree that Ferrell felt a bit out of place. I think it was the hair.
Damn, a lot of you hated Ferrell in this. I thought his Ric Flair impression was hysterical. As soon as I saw him in costume I was waiting for him to unleash Flair's trademark WOOOOOOOO and his version of it just killed me when he finally did it.
For me, this show taps the same mine of humor as FOOT FIST WAY, only much more effectively. I'm loving this show so far.
I love this show, but I'm starting to worry that they are going to try and redeem Kenny.
"How is it making $3 a week dickhead. Sell weed you'll make more money."

Yeah, I really, really love this show.
This has been great series so far. I wasn't sure if I immediately liked the change in tone between the first and the second episode (some characters have changed), but I got used to that. Actually, I'm digging what David Gordon Green is doing to it. Yes, it's vulgar and hilarious, but there are certain elements (both dramatic and visual) where I can see it was directed by the guy who made George Washington and All the Real Girls.

Still is awesome.

better episode.

i liked that scene where he was playing with the briefs (for no apparent reason) and held them up and said "thats where my dick comes out"

He put on a ski mask and tried to take out a high schooler. How is that a sign of possible redemption?
Thought that was Stevie?
Yea, it was Stevie.
They're going to show Stevie wearing a mask of human skin by the end of the season, I just know it.

I suppose they might try to redeem Kenny but I don't think they could do it by the end of the season. Cassie is the only person who is remotely trying to appeal to Kenny's conscience and he's too busy framing her face with the dickflap of his jockeys.

Whoa, whoa, whoa. This show actually contains Will Ferrell doing a fucking Ric Flair impersonation?! I must watch it NOW.

Sorry, I read it as Stevie. My mistake. Still though, I stand by my statement in that we haven't seen Kenny doing anything that resembles redemption yet.
It'd be funny if Kenny learned lessons, but then got invited back to play in the MLB and forgot every lesson and became an asshole again. I'm guessing something like that will take place. Katy Mixon looked way hotter in this episode for some reason.
This episode cemented my absolute love of this show. Everything from Stevie attacking the kids on the baseball field, to Kenny storming into the bedroom and screaming at Cassie to get up were great.

Also..."You look like a retarded Michael Myers."

"If there's one thing that I hate, it's losing. If there's 2 things that I hate, it's losing against cancer."

Magical.
Now I need a transcript of this episode so I can put Kenny Powers' dialogue in the item description when I put his shit on Ebay.
Hey Caldwell, Kenny Powers say good luck with your fucking career! I'm gonna break your arm!
The masks were awesomely creepy. And the losing against cancer line killed me.
"I don't believe you've met my fuck buddy."

Best use of Sound of Silence I saw this weekend.
Are you cryin Kenny?
I am afraid I have given up on the show. I love McBride, but this is too much like Foot Fist Way. It started off really good, but has gone slowly downhill each episode. This has officially been removed from the DVR playlist.
Why remove it now? There's two episodes left in the series. Surely you have another hour to spare with something you've already spent two hours watching.
OK. Did not realize this was only 6 episodes. Two more to go, then.

I think it's gotten better with each episode.
I thought the third episode was almost too much to bare, but the party, and each twist and turn was fucking brilliant. This was - for me - the best episode yet.
There's no way I'd say it's going down in quality. The opening was all kinds of awesome. "Just three more pumps. 3...2...1."
