Conor Oberst

Jesus Christ, I like Bright Eyes as much as the next man but two hours of Oberst's rustic folkly solo stuff nearly killed me.

Still his set was energetic and fun enough for the first forty minutes and seeing the lead singer stop a gig to chat up a teenager in the front row for ten minutes is always fun.

I'm still having trouble getting into his solo work, it's not a case of not liking the album as much as finding it a little beneath him. Ever since Lifted and I'm Wide Awake It's Morning I've viewed Bright Eyes with insanely high regard (I refuse to acknowledge the existence of any Bright Eyes albums made after 2005 though) and so it's hard to get used to Oberst being a little placid and a little upbeat at times.

The Four Winds EP is pretty great, way better than Cassadagga so I proudly ackowledge its existence.
I can't get to the solo album either, it feels "lazy". I mean, its not like Conor hasn't made a career of recording simple songs drunk/stoned out of his mind... but this one is just meh. It never climaxes. Even Four Winds (the song, I mean) felt "passionate".

They haven't had anything as good as Method Acting though, which is sort of a shame.

I'm digging the album, but I'm with you Spike; after Lifted I have a hard time really loving any of his work from his solo stuff to Desaparecidos (although I do enjoy their ablums) because Lifted was just that great.
