Chiggers

I think I got them....

or rather they got me. I've got these bites on my feet and ankles and up on my legs.

Thought they were fleas.. but my wife and son don't have bites. I thought they were spider bites, but I really don't think I'd have that many.

so my conclusion is that I got chigger bites from weed eating this weekend. And now I have been itching all week.

Chigarid is a chigger anti-itching solution that is sold in the local drug stores.. which I can't buy because its been on recall all summer.

what should I use to kill the itching?

Buy some clear nail polish and paint over the bites.

What's the stuff called, calamine lotion, some pinkish stuff, when I had these as a kid I had to bathe in that shit for a week. I can't remember if it killed them, but it sure helped with the itching.

Glad I could be of no help.

In the exact same boat. Bites all over my feet. Been putting cortizone cream on them, and that seems to take care of most of them...but a couple of them come back with a vengeance. Got a huge chunk of my skin missing. Just lather a bunch of stuff over it and don't ever ever touch it. Picking off the scabs, while cool, is not recommend. Trust me.

So this is not some terrible slur for black Chewers? phew

Fortunately they make a clear version now. No experience using it for chiggers, but it's great for poison ivy.

Here's where I gross you out with facts.

Quote:
The preferred feeding locations on people are parts of the body where clothing fits tightly over the skin such as around the belt line, waistline, under girdles and under socks, or where the flesh is thin, tender or wrinkled such as the ankles, in the armpits, back of the knees, in front of the elbow, or in the groin.

Chigger larvae do not burrow into the skin, nor suck blood. They pierce the skin and inject into the host a salivary secretion containing powerful, digestive enzymes that break down skin cells that are ingested (tissues become liquefied and sucked up). Also, this digestive fluid causes surrounding tissues to harden, forming a straw-like feeding tube of hardened flesh (stylostome) from which further, partially-digested skin cells may be sucked out. After a larva is fully fed in four days, it drops from the host, leaving a red welt with a white, hard central area on the skin that itches severely and may later develop into dermatitis. Any welts, swelling, itching, or fever will usually develop three to six hours after exposure and may continue a week or longer. If nothing is done to relieve itching, symptoms may continue a week or more. Scratching a bite may break the skin, resulting in secondary infections. However, chiggers are not known to transmit any disease in this country.

yeah.. turns out I did scratch one really badly and it spread into about 5 red spots on my leg and its really f'n gross.

I'm using the generic version of SARNA to treat it, I just put some on and it does help with the itching.

Despite billylove and his "facts"(heh), this has always worked for me.

I could have sworn the bug burrowed into you skin(causing the bumps and itching) and this "suffocated" them by clogging your pores. Maybe it's just a placebo effect, but yeah, it always works for me.

Amputation is sure to stop the itching.
