Nothing says "Happy Birthday" like free stuff, and in this case the free stuff is the original C&C: Red Alert for the PC. EA will be giving away C&C:RA this Sunday, which marks the 13th birthday for the Command & Conquer series. It will be made available on the Red Alert 3 website starting at 12 A.M. PST.

If you go to www.redalert3.com on Sunday, you can download your very own copy of the original Red Alert, absolutely free.

It's available for download.

I'd be up for multiplayer later today or tomorrow.

Downloading ALLIED now. I'll be down for some fun sometime before the weekend is over. I have never played this game before, but I've played a bunch of other games like it.

Anyone having any problems getting this to work on Vista? Dling it now just wondering if there's any extra steps to get it to work properly, knowing what a pain in the ass it is to get older games to run on Microsoft's POS operating system.

Try running it under compatibility mode? Right click the icons and try to make them run in Windows 95 or XP Service Pack 2.

It comes with an XP compatibility patch, but nothing for vista. I'm assuming the XP patch is adequate enough. You do need to be running 95 compatibility mode on the executable though.

It took me forever to get this working, because I am dumb. Then I started one-player mode and that was 3 hours ago. Fun.

Now how does the multiplayer work, then? I'm looking and it's all 'modem' this and 'baud' that.

Okay, I got it working. Let me get in some practice. Anyone figured out if the multiplayer works in a convenient way?
