Cover Tune Shootout - Page 4

Hüsker Dü's "Eight Miles High", remarkable as a superior cover of what was already one of the greatest rock songs of all time.

Also, anyone remember that Pussy Galore/Tad split 7" of covers of Black Flag's Damaged I/II? The originals are god, obviously, but I recall liking the covers almost as much.

Huh. Don't know how I feel about it. Definitely a new approach for Williams, and I like the arrangement a lot.

His voice doesn't quite fit the instrumentation but it's a way more interesting song than the original.

To go back to the anyone can do "Sunday Bloody Sunday" better than U2 I've always loved the Evergreen Terrace version.

And one of my favorite cover songs though I wouldn't say I prefer it to the original is The Dresden Dolls version of "War Pigs" just for how balls out the two of them go.

International opera sensation and soprano Renee Fleming has an album of pop/modern covers out called "Dark Hope." On it, she covers "In Your Eyes," "Hallelujah," both of which are songs that NEVER NEED TO BE COVERED AGAIN. Especially the latter.

But then she goes and covers "Intervention" by Arcade Fire and "Soul Meets Body," and those are both pretty good.

Mastodon do some great covers of "The Bit" from the Melvins and "Emerald" by Thin Lizzy.

Opeth also do a really nice cover of Alice in Chains' "Would?"

Apparently, it's the result of her appearance on Elvis Costello's Spectacle, which was halfway decent. But a Mars Volta song?????

I repeat: ?????

She covered With Twilight As My Guide??

Yeah, Dave's reaction is the correct one.

I didn't see her on Spectacle, but that's a show I found very hard to get into. Blasphemy, I know.

I'm so sick of Hallelujah covers. I bitched about this on my Facebook, but I've probably heard that song 200 plus times since working at Barnes & Noble. Everybody is covering that song. It's not cute anymore. It's fucking annoying.

I saw Buckley play it live and hold that high note near the end for what seemed like five minutes. To my mind, the song's completed. No one's ever going to top his version.

I loved Spectacle, but every episode's success was highly dependent on the guest(s) and either your familiarity with their work or their ability to shoot the shit about music in general.

Pyogenesis' cover of Toto's "Africa" is always worth a listen.

My friend posted this on his Facebook a few weeks ago. It's a band called the Ooks of Hazard doing a really cool cover of MGMT's "Kids".
