I think that's what makes it rise above being mediocre. Similar to Fast Times, it could have been just a fluff film, but it strove for more, even if it didn't work for you (I thought the messages about class and sexuality fit well with the era the movie portrayed).

I don't know. That abortion shit creeped me the fuck out... and I'm pretty much pro-choice on the matter.

I was about to get involved in the Dirty Dancing debate... but I've done it too many times before and I'm in too good a mood to taint it with pure bile and venom right now.

And? Its a dance movie. What's it supposed to win for, best action sequence?

Seriously, other than being a girl movie with terrible dialogue, no one has yet to comment on why its a terrible pick. I suppose if it had Steven Seagal roundhouse kicking Jerry Orbach in the face it'd be a classic. But, given the purely nostalgic genre stuff some have drafted, calling DD worst pick of the draft is asinine. Subjectively you can hate the film all you want, but objectively its a perfectly appropriate and justifiable choice for this draft.

Nice rundown, Kabong!

In defense of Diva, ain't no pick worse than "Critters". And Swayze deserves some props for bringing sexy back. (Also never have a lead actress with a nose like that again. It was kinda cute. Damn Hollywood and their impossible beauty standards; made the poor girl go and cut it off. Well, Babs is still around, i guess) Can do without ever hearing that soundtrack again. Takes me back to the awkward stages of first puppy love, middle school meladrama & sexual frustrations.

Over the last two weeks, watched about ten of the drafted movies. Conan The Barbarian & Blue Velvet have risen in my estimation (To my chagrin, really late to the party on the latter. Looking forward to reevaluating Wild At Heart). Something Wild has taken a bit of a dip.

Something Wild is all about structure and plotting. Take a look at the middle of the film with the intro of Ray Liotta and compare it to the construction of "Psycho" or "Boogie Nights" (PTA admits to ripping the tonal shift).

It's not the biggest movie, but it's Demme showing that a comedy can be more than a comedy while still being funny.

Dirty Dancing is the estrogen version of Karate Kid. It's female wish fulfilment fantasy. Hating on it is so pointless.

True enough. Though I would still watch Critters over Dirty Dancing any day of the week. Of course, you might say that's because I'm a guy... and you'd be right.
I guess, in the spirit of the draft, you could say you are Just One of the Guys, yes?

I hate myself.

I wish the search function would work, so I could re-link to Slater's AMAZING review of Dirty Dancing. 'Cause it pretty much encapsulates how much the movie actually does suck, and why "Nobody puts Baby in the corner" is an awful, stupid line.

Edit: The review is lost (I guess forever), but the thread lives on.

There was once a long debate between friends that JOOTG was THE quintessential generic 80s teen comedy:

-Plot is a gimmick pulled from more successful mainstream movie? Yes.
-Stars a face you'll never see again (unless you're looking really closely in This Is Spinal Tap)? Yes.
-Is otherwise peopled by recognizable faces (Williams Jacoby and Zabka, Clayton Rohner, Sherilyn Fenn)? Absolutely.
-Perfunctory nudity? Yes.
-Countless masters worn out through cable reruns? Damn skippy.

"He looks like the Karate Kid and dresses like Elvis Costello!"

Edit: Great opening shot, but the soundtrack is raping my mind.

I did see Joyce Hyser on one of those VH1 thingys a few years ago where they had the audacity to call her a former "star". I don't think so.

She still looks like Justine Bateman, but with more work done.

EDIT: I don't think even Diva is honestly arguing that Dirty Dancing is a genuinely great movie. I'm going to admit that I'd rather watch that than tripe like No Retreat, No Surrender. I don't understand the love for that one, ironic or not.

Great body, though.

Holy shit, look at the body language on Zabka and pals at the 2 minute mark, right after he says "watch the prickers".
-Homoerotic subtext? Yes.

Or, just text, I guess.

Gotta love the Zabka, though. Who else from the 80's teen glut would go on to star in movies with Bolo Yeung? Karate Kid, indeed.

Awww, Just One Of The Guys.
Love how after the famous *flash* the guy's reaction is to become furious, and storm off. (Oh, the betrayal!) Think if one of my friends turned out to secretly be a chick who looked like Joyce Hyser..anger would not be the first response.

I'm really surprised that Kabong didn't pick Berry Gordy's The Last Dragon.

That being said, internet issues and exhaustion have kept me from updating the Chosen. I hope to get to it tonight, and will post the final tally of directors/years/other b.s. here.

Well, he did shit on No Retreat, No Surrender, and The Last Dragon is even worse, so...

And while I like the Kabong rundown, even if I totally disagree on some of the comments, it's well done. But he shat upon the best Carpenter; Big Trouble, so I still hates his guts...

I'll post Tuesday for my favorites...
How is Big Trouble better than The Thing?

It's greatness, but it's not that great.

To chime in briefly on what I said I’d do, when the dust has settled.

20 Picks You Really Have To See To “Get” Strax’s 80s Viewpont:

Blow Out
The Hitcher
Robocop
Videodrome
Blue Velvet
To Live & Die In LA
Last Temptation Of Christ
Do The Right Thing
The Hidden
The Right Stuff
Big Trouble In Little China
Runaway Train
Tootsie
Blood Simple
Hannah & Her Sisters
Dead Ringers
An American Werewolf In London
King Of Comedy
Near Dark
Come & See

That’s a cross section of the decade I could be proud to stand behind. It’s on that takes in the very best this volatile era of sweeping ideological, technological and aesthetic change had to offer.

There’s little of the embarrassing naïveté of the decade taste so often forgot (hello Working Girl, I’m *so glad* you weren’t invited!) . But there’s a lot of what was proudly looking forward toward a more propulsive, frantic blow out (ha!) of the 20th century's last gaudy decade.

Nah, I love No Retreat, No Surrender. Silly as it is, the fight scenes kick Karate Kid's ass and, um... ah, damn it. That's all it's good for really.

Never saw the review, but I pretty much feel the exact opposite of whatever slater feels. And its ironic that you're arguing about stupid lines in a draft full of bad 80's genre flicks. I mean, come on now.

Thanks, I'm not. I just don't understand the intense hate for it considering the tripe people are lobbing against it holds for over 1/3 of the films in the draft.

If there were a "best titties in a movie" draft, this and Jamie Lee in Trading Places would surely rank towards the top.
Now THERE'S a draft idea.

I was kidding in another thread, but I floated a 90-Minutes-Or-Shorter Draft, and I think that could be kind of goofy fun. Especially considering if we do sixties, then we do 90's, and then that's about it.

How about a Original Movie Songs Draft?
A rapid fire draft would be kinda cool. And the topic wouldn't be announced until 5 minutes before the draft started. You get 30 people, each person gets 120 seconds. So that's an hour a round. A 5 round draft would be 5 hours. That's not gonna work.

Oh well. Nevermind.

Move along.

Glad you found Conan. I kind of rediscoverd it myself five years ago or so. Much better a film than I would have thought.

It kind of turns out that all David Lynch's older movies are pretty excellent. When I was a teenager, I wasn't in to them at all, but they're all great, including Wild at Heart, and even Lost fucking Highway (kinda). My least favorite Lynch at this point is probably Inland Empire (or Dune, I guess. That one isn't quite great).
I live in a world where Lost Highway is an "older" Lynch movie. This is no country for old men...
I'm so old I still think of So as the 'new' Peter Gabriel album.

But OK, best scores-- as opposed to soundtracks, i.e., collections of songs. I've mentioned some of them before:

Danny Elfman, Beetlejuice
John Williams, The Witches of Eastwick
James Horner, Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan and Star Trek III: The Search For Spock
Jack Nietzsche, The Razor's Edge
Tangerine Dream, Miracle Mile
Jerry Goldsmith, Explorers
John Barry, The Living Daylights
Thomas Newman, The Man With One Red Shoe
Mark Knopfler, Local Hero
Elmer Bernstein, Stripes
With Conan, Munchausen, Excalibur, and Last Crusade in the bonus round, I think I have the most bombastic score in this draft. Even more than Dickson

Yeah, I love Conan. It's a pity that they had to suck it so bad with the sequel. And the score is fantastic!
I kinda love Conan the Destroyer. It's unpretentious and efficient, beautifully shot (by the same guy who photographed The Red Shoes, for chrissakes); and as noted, tremendously scored. Okay, Tracey Walter is terrible but Sarah Douglas, Grace Jones and Olivia d'Abo are collectively the last word in eye candy.

Don't get me started on Red Sonja though. Now that was crap.

Man, how great is Fast Times At Ridgemont High? Its honesty plays almost sweet now, hard to believe it was a near "X"; considered shocking. Also, still hilarious. The copy I watched was an old VHS from '86. Could swear some of the musical ques were different (know there was some licensing problems; could of sworn the Jackson Browne song was replacing a Tom Petty one), but doing a search can't find a list of changes, or whether the current DVD is definitive. Anyone know?
Jackson Browne song has been in every version I've seen, granted never saw it at the theater.

I couldn't, no I wouldn't, want to imagine that scene with a different song.

Yeah, knew she always lost it to Jackson Browne, but could of sworn a Tom Petty song was in there somewhere.
Anyway, this has to be one of those perfectly cast movies (especially compared to most teen fare today). No performance misses a beat or rings false. (Well, maybe Forrest Whitaker's character is taken to the extreme. Who cares tho, because the football scene is one of the funniest) After this movie, don't think anyone would jack it w.o. locking the door first. awkward! Of course, someone like Phoebe Cates walking in is how many a Penthouse forum letter starts. (Or so I heard)

Ever see the semi-sequel The Wild Life? Tempted to give it a rent, and see if it's as bad as remembered. Chris Penn ripping off his brothers shtick, and a very hot Lea Thompson are all I can recall.
