Google launching their own web browser - Page 2

I think it would make sense to isolate any plugin from the main browser processes. I mean, that old Adobe Acrobat plugin used to piss the crap out of me when I accidentally started loading a 10MB PDF and locking the whole app up.

In concept I like what Chrome adds, but I don't think I'm going to use it regularly because it doesn't have the extendability or support from web developers that Firefox has.

Well, I'm liking it a heck of a lot more than Internet Explorer, and it doesn't make my computer run slowly like Firefox did.

Success!

I've been using chrome for a few days and I have to say it's growing on me. I'm a huge fan of minimalistic UIs and in that regard chrome is after my own heart. As to the matter of speed it certainly loads up faster than either IE8 or Firefox and it feels snappier too.

Also remember that it is an open source browser so the security minded of you should rest assured that there's about a million geeks going through it with a fine comb and any foul play on Google's part will be snuffed out in no time.

Finally, everyone with video playback problems search for and install Flash Player 10 beta. It fixed everything for me.

The downside from my opinion of a process per plugin is the wasted resources for a small plugin, something that is not Flash, say a weather gadget on your statusbar (Chrome doesn't have a status bar for example).

Also, how about a plugin that adds a toolbar or menuitem, that doesn't need a process at all.

Need to know more details about it ..

I think I got some Asshole Fever coming on...

I'm really liking it so far. My pages come up in just about half a second.

so, after a week, are you standing behind this? I do.

There's one minor annoyance, and it's highly subjective, but it's a deal-breaker for me.

I keep my taskbar hidden until I mouse over it. I just don't like a swath of screen being taken up by something I don't need all the time. But for some reason, when using Chrome, the taskbar won't pop up when I mouse over it. I've tried minimizing it and expanding it to see if that works, but no, it won't allow the taskbar to pop up over it. Just frustrating enough for me not to use it.

I just noticed this note from IT at my company as they were discouraging us from installing Chrome:

Quote:
  • The installation of Google Chrome requires that your vulnerability setting be set to “safe” – allowing the potential for our systems to be compromised.
  • Initial reports state that Google Chrome is vulnerable to a “carpet-bombing flaw,” which greatly increases the risk of systems being hacked.
  • Each installation of Google Chrome embeds a unique user ID and can link Google searches, Gmail® and Google Chrome to a specific individual. The first time you log into Gmail, Google Chrome synchs and then numbers and saves your browser information.
  • According to articles on the Web, Google reserves the right to automatically update and install Google Chrome, and it has a right to display some of your content, in conjunction with promoting its services. According to the Google’s Web site, this product is still in beta phase.

I found Chrome increasingly shitty rendering flash apps. Like South Park videos youtube etc...

Currently using the 2.0.156.1 version (dev). It's pretty fast.

You need a dev version...and now you will enjoy some themes.

BTW anyone interested in how the browser wars are developing?
I would be interested in the browser wars if Google would release a Mac version. I tried the Chrome in XP via Boot Camp, and liked it quite a bit.

With Schmidt leaving the Apple board, and the kerfuffle over Google Voice, I wonder how much energy will be spent on Apple-related projects now. Especially with Google going ahead with OS development.

if you’re that curious, take a look at the developer release:
http://www.google.com/chrome/intl/en...ev.html?dl=mac

Seeing as how Google isn’t known for their design chops, and the fact that Chrome uses the rendering engine Apple’s developed for Safari*, I’ve never seen the need to try it out on the Mac.

* Sure, you could argue KHTML pre-existed Safari, but there’s almost no comparison between that and what Apple’s done with it since.

That got me a big WOW and a smile at the end.
