Chicago Public School Boycott

Here.

I'm from Northfield (originally) and I have to say, I'm really proud of the way they seemed to have handled the situation. It's refreshing. I think education is the biggest issue this country faces.

Will this create any traction to help fix Chicago's fucked up public school system? Probably not.

This is an awesome story. Thanks for posting, JuddL. I've heard nothing about this anywhere.

It's an inspired idea for a demonstration and such an important lesson for both the rich side and the poor side. From the story it sounds like the message is for hope, not despair. There's zero reason that kids from affluent areas should have better access to education than from poor.

I've volunteer-taught special programs in classrooms ranging from the desperately poor to the affluent and the disparity makes your eyes water. It's two vastly different worlds. Yet the intelligence and curiosity of the kids is the same. Poor kids aren't stupid. There are diamonds in the rough and it kills you that some of these kids will never gain access to the kinds of resources and teachers that will help them realize their potential.

I really hope this demonstration makes a difference in Chicago. I hope something like this happens in LA...

ps. I agree that education is the most urgent issue America faces right now.
