Great Horror Trailers

Preface: I've seen most of Cronenberg's flicks, but SHIVERS has escaped me. It's not easily available on DVD (out of print), but I recently checked out the trailer on youtube and it's done its job and got me really wanting to see it. It's a mixture of its audacity, Cronenberg's legacy, my love for mind-controlling slugs (NIGHT OF THE CREEPS and SLITHER!), and the late Percy Rodrigues' amazing narration. FYI: Percy also did the VO for the NIGHT OF THE CREEPS (and JAWS, and EDDIE LOVE YOU, etc) trailer as well.

There're threads on the boards about effective trailers, artistic trailers, and chart-topping trailers, but specifically, what are some great horror trailers? What are your faves? Which are scary on their own? Which get you in the mood? Which are a product of their time?

Personally, I love the hyperbole-filled ones of the 50s:

“More terrifying than any horror known to man comes a creeping crawling monster whose towering fury no one can escape. Tarantula. Science Fiction’s most terrifying thrill! Bullets can’t stop it. Dynamite can’t kill it. Tarantula.”

“Evolution reversed and horror that waited a hundred million years becomes a terrifying reality! Monster on the Campus. Your flesh will crawl. Your blood will chill… in TERROR. Monster on the Campus.”

“From outer space they came. Meteor borne, meteor strange. Now these amazing Monolith Monsters reveal powers. Shocking beyond belief! The Monolith Monsters! The most startling science fiction concept ever brought to the screen! Stranger than anything science had ever discovered. As thrill crowds upon thrills.”

It's been mentioned in the Exorcist 2 thread, but the trailer makes it look like the most amazing film of all time.

It does. I've only seen the 1st one (classic), but this trailer makes me wish I was watching this NOW.

It's a glorious mess. If you go into it expecting a decent Exorcist sequel you will be sorely disappointed but if you go in expecting an inexplicable Exorcist-flavored fever dream, you'll be rewarded. You should watch it.

I thought the almost silent one for "The Shining", with the elevator door/room full o' blood sequence played out in slo mo was very effective. Scared the piss out of me as a kid, when I saw it in front of "Hangar 18", I think.

For some reason, when I was little, the trailer for "Child's Play 2" sent me literally running out of a theater. It's a slow fade-in to a music box playing "Pop Goes The Weasel", spinning in place, and before the thing pops out (which we're all terrifyingly anticipating), Chucky steps on it and, in his trademark sneer, goes, "Sorry, Jack. Chucky's back!"

It still kinda bothers me to this day.

I hate threads like this, because they make me recall something that scared the shit out of me as a kid, I go find it on youtube, and it's just not that scary 27 years later. I AM A PUSSY.

Movie was a piece of shit, but the trailer for VISITING HOURS was chilling. Also, good the AMITYVILLE HORROR.

Well, it was for your eyes only...

The original Alien trailer freaked me out as a kid because I couldn't make heads or tails out of it. I loved it when trailers were like that.

HUMONGOUS.

Something evil has been growing for 30 years.

I can't remember what I linked up there.

Silent Scream scared me shitless.

So did Suspiria.

I had an old VHS tape filled to the brim with classic trailers. The music cue that plays as the announcer says, "Night...of the Living Dead" freaked me out.

They showed these two before a screening of The Evil Dead last month or so.

Orgy of the Living Dead triple feature, though the YouTube clip cuts off the rating at the end, which was PG and made a great capper to the trailer.

The Gruesome Twosome

I think it's interesting that one of the best, most elegantly simple horror trailers I've ever seen (frankly one of the coolest teaser trailers period) belongs to one of the worst films in recent memory...

The Italian trailer for DEEP RED.

I love how some of the shots are still frames, and others are of the actors posing. It's really weird.

That SUSPIRIA still scares me shitless.

Some of my favorites:

CHRISTINE

SLEEPAWAY CAMP

CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON

Return to Horror High's trailer did the Suspiria gag a bit better I think. I definitely remember being freaked out by it as a kid and turning the channel when I saw the commercial for it coming on.

The Jaws 3-D teaser is so simple, yet effective. Unfortunately, it's also misleading, cause it paints a picture of more terror out at sea, which turned out to only be half-right.

I never saw this Halloween III trailer while growing up. I probably was spared a night of missing sleep from having missed it too!

one movie that scared the crap out if me when i was a kid was The Blob remake http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sixDADVVnxA that sink scene made me jump so high and the trailer freaked me out too.

Cold Creek Manor

www.youtube.com/watch?v=R_vVDnitpsA

Really only the last 15 secs of the trailer, with the creepy hand grabbing Sharon Stone (if I remember correctly there is no such scene in the movie). The trailer actually does a nice job of selling the idea of new arrivals Quaid & Stone vs The Most Terrifying Thing Ever... then you watch the movie, and it's like relax guys, false alarm, it's just Stephen Dorff.

Also, Red Eye:

Always loved this one. Fools you into thinking it's for some kind of light, breezy chick flick with a chance encounter at the airport, but then Cillian Murphy turns on the creepy, suddenly developing a bad case of Dark Shadows conjunctivitis, and we find out it's a Wes Craven flick. Brilliant! (but as with Cold Creek Manor, shame about the movie)

This flick soooo pissed me off with the supernatural bait&switch.

I don't think there is a more awesome trailer than the one for Leatherface: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre III.
That trailer promised so much and the film delivered so little.
My friend and I absolutely LOVED it when we saw it on MonsterVision back in the mid 90s, then 2 or 3 years ago we picked up a copy of the DVD from a bargain bin somewhere and... yowza. Wish we'd left that one a fond memory.

Percy R's narration again kicks my ass in the WARLOCK trailer!

The TORSO trailer is just so bizarre. The way the narrator announces the title "TORSO!!!", I almost expect a superhero to come bustin in on the scene. Or atleast a midget luchadore. I'm reminded of Cleopatra Schwartz from KENTUCKY FRIED MOVIE. Samual L Bronkowitz presents TORSO!!! And the Dr Zhivago/War & Peace text? Weird.

Even the New Line Cinema logo from this "Nightmare on Elm Street 3" teaser gives me the heebie-jeebies. The trailer itself always gives me a good jolt, too. You know where it's going and it still nails you.

I found the trailer for THE VILLAGE to be terrifying when I saw it, back in the day. Then again I was on a nutmeg trip at the time so I have no idea if it would still hold up

Nice. Always preferred Rodriguez to LaFontaine. Don tried too hard, lacked Percy's effortless gravitas.

Here's a classic way-better-than-the-movie horror trailer (couple of non horror movie openings will be hogging all the attention tomorrow, but we shouldn't forget what day it is!)

The end (well, really the rating after all that build up) made me laugh hard.

PHANTASM II

The trailer for The Burning is fantastic and seems to have provided part of the inspiration for Edgar Wright's Don't.

Practically every giallo I've ever seen has a great trailer. I'm especially fond of Spasmo and Seven Blood-Stained Orchids. Also, Joe D'Amato's Beyond the Darkness has one of those trailers that promises you exactly what you get.

I think the last contemporary horror movie trailer I liked was for The Strangers. Pity I don't care for the film. Bonus points for Haute Tension's use of Sonic Youth's cover of Superstar in its trailer, enormous piece of shit film that it is.
