GOP Convention Discussion

Thread Starter
In an effort to break up the out-of-hand Presidential thread let's divert discussion of the Republican's convention here.

After the first night my main criticism is whoever designed the satge wasn't thinking about the TV coverage. The huge video screeen behind the speaker, which might look like great in person, although it might make the speaker seem small, but when the TV camera's focus on the speaker at the podium all the TV audeince sees is a very small portion of the large iamge projected. It usually ends up looking like they are standing against a colored background. Pretty pooor planning, I think.

Tonight's theme is Reform. The schedule:

I said it on the other thread, the whole setup looks cheap and amateurish.

I don't have a screenshot bu the large screens and lighthing used at the Dem one were amazing, they just make this look like something of a high school rally.

I think tonight they're going to run that video of the super giant US flag during Palin's speech, swhich is better than static images of green or blue though.
Thanks for posting the schedule. Looks like I can tune out until 9:30 tonight.
I'll be tuned in to watch the eventual heel turn during the pivitol 9 o'clock hour and wonder which superstars are going to come out from behind the curtains to wrestle the mic away from Palin.

I've got my money on Romney, decked out in classic red and yellow rushing in for the save while the classic "Real American" is blaring over the loud speakers.

Cowboy Roy?

I'd love to hear how the GOP is going to "reform" seeing as their policies seem to be stuck in some imaginary "Leave It to Beaver" America.

I'm in for the Palin speech, as anyone interested in the election should tune in to watch that. I think it'll be just a rehash of her two speeches already but that will be mixed in with whatever message the McCain camp wants the VP to focus on. Which is what I'm curious to see.
Some of those speakers aren't going to have time for much more than introducing themselves and saying "God bless America".

I may be floating around in time to catch it, but I think I'd still prefer to get the gist second hand from the forum as I'm fresh out of Norvasc.

While anything could happen(bless live tv), I'm betting they made that place pretty much ninja proof now.

Which might be just about enough for some people on the base.

My favorite bit about the convention so far is how they keep on mentioning how John McCain Is A Maverick Who Bucks The Party while never mentioning exactly how he has bucked the party because the party in the room would absolutely riot.

Well it's certainly enough for Down's Syndrome Republican. YAAARRRR!

I think tonight will be when the knives really come out. I expect nothing short of complete total destruction on Obama followed up by a special episode of "Meet the Palins" where Sarah's spunky daughter gets married live on stage.

Well they did, I think it was Lieberman who mentioned campaign finance reform and the room was completely silent.

Frankly I'd rather see Sarah's married daughter get spunked live on stage. That I'd tune in for.

(too soon?)

"Musical Performance: John Rich, Gretchen Wilson, and Cowboy Troy "

That cracked my ass up.

But you haven't heard "McCain Kennedy Immigration Reform" or "voted against the Bush Tax Cut.
No, but the people in that crowd are have irrational hatred of that bill and bashed McCain in the head with it in order to blow up his chances in 2000.

It's funny, they keep talking about "reform" over and over again...... but what are they reforming? I have not heard anything from the Republicans to suggest that they have a change in gameplan compared to the GW Bush White House.

What the hell are they reforming? Or do they mean reforming as in we're rebuilding the Presidency from the same material and instructions left behind by Bush?

It seems Palin's speech was written for someone else and is now being tailored for her.

Quote:
Not anticipating that McCain would choose a woman as his running mate, the speech that was prepared in advance was "very masculine," according to campaign manager Rick Davis, and "we had to start from scratch."

This is just another proof that McCains campaign doesn´t seem to have a bloody clue what the fuck they are doing let alone a long thought game plan.

He means take everything that's been said about her over the last five days and twist it to serve their diabolical agenda.

Besides "I've got a bigger dick than Obama"(and we all know that would be false) what could be so inherently masculine that it required daming down.

Rich was referring to his song "Raisin' McCain," which he's been performing on the campaign trail. The song invokes McCain's time as a prisoner of war in Vietnam.

"He stayed strong, stayed extra long / 'Til they let all the other boys out," he sings. "Now we've got a real man with an American plan / We're going to put him in the big White House."

Rich will be playing his song tonight at the Republican convention, and he says he's been pleased to spend time with both Senator McCain and presumptive Republican VP nominee Governor Sarah Palin.

"Getting to be a part of this process is just off the charts for an old country guy like myself," he said.

So, someone explain to me how this was allowed to be broadcast on US TV?

Nice fucking color scheme. Did I mention NTSC chokes on red? Because it's the only color on the goddamn screen.

EDIT - Not counting the Fox News banners.

Excerpts: Remarks by Alaska Governor Sarah Palin
Vice Presidential Nominee to Address the 2008 Republican National Convention

SAINT PAUL, Minn. - This evening Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, the Republican Party’s vice presidential nominee, will address the 2008 Republican National Convention. Excerpts from the governor’s remarks, as prepared for delivery, are below.

On her experience as a public servant:

"I had the privilege of living most of my life in a small town. I was just your average hockey mom, and signed up for the PTA because I wanted to make my kids’ public education better. When I ran for city council, I didn’t need focus groups and voter profiles because I knew those voters, and knew their families, too. Before I became governor of the great state of Alaska, I was mayor of my hometown. And since our opponents in this presidential election seem to look down on that experience, let me explain to them what the job involves. I guess a small-town mayor is sort of like a ‘community organizer,’ except that you have actual responsibilities."

On why she is going to Washington, D.C.:

"I’m not a member of the permanent political establishment. And I’ve learned quickly, these past few days, that if you’re not a member in good standing of the Washington elite, then some in the media consider a candidate unqualified for that reason alone. But here’s a little news flash for all those reporters and commentators: I’m not going to Washington to seek their good opinion - I’m going to Washington to serve the people of this country."

On energy policies that the McCain-Palin administration will implement:

"Our opponents say, again and again, that drilling will not solve all of America’s energy problems - as if we all didn’t know that already. But the fact that drilling won’t solve every problem is no excuse to do nothing at all. Starting in January, in a McCain-Palin administration, we’re going to lay more pipelines...build more nuclear plants...create jobs with clean coal...and move forward on solar, wind, geothermal, and other alternative sources. We need American energy resources, brought to you by American ingenuity, and produced by American workers."

On John McCain:

"Here’s how I look at the choice Americans face in this election. In politics, there are some candidates who use change to promote their careers. And then there are those, like John McCain, who use their careers to promote change."
Networks expect record ratings, I'm kind of surprised they had a lot of viewers last night actually.

I'm an independent who is probably going to vote for Obama...

That being said, the self righteous arrogance of some of you who are fervently pro Obama is just infuriating. These personal attacks are ludicrous. Disagree and comment on the issues without the name-calling, please.

Those excerpts kind of make it plain that this speech is partially an appeal to campaign contributors for the gold strike they're hoping for after this convention.

Strangely, they also remind me of Springfield.

You'd think you don't read the rest of the forums, where everyone's self-righteously arrogant about everything besides politics. Including pooping stances.

Carly Fiorina is going to get ZERO applause I think. What a terrible fucking speaker. How many rhetorical questions will she ask?

What an odd assortment tonight. Huckabee, Giuliani, Romney, Cindy and Palin.

How does Giuliani even get invited to this thing? He got 7 votes.

Quick question: I didn't really watch much of the Dems, but I'm wondering... did the networks show the convention prior to 10pm?

From what I can see on my tv menu, the networks aren't showing the GOP convention till 10. Was that similar to the Dems?

Yes. The networks show one hour per night. The cable networks show longer.

I'm not sure but I think the networks are required to show equal time.

Fiorina was an absolute disaster.

I can't stand Romney but he is keeping the crowd awake.
