The Political Cartoon Thread

In the spirit of further Balkanization of the Politics forum, how about a place to put all the graphical zingers, and keep the insanely fast growing text threads as memory-free as possible.

Anyhoo, Toles has been rolling.

ETA: If there was one of these already, my bad; couldn't dig one up.

Great idea.

I had found these and put them in the GOP thread and the bottom one also in the election thread. This is probably a better place (Sorry for the multi-posts):

My local paper just gets it right some times.

Now that's a good one.

As seen on Digg....just pretend it's a drawing.

That photoshop is wholly inaccurate. Bush used all that stuff as toilet paper years ago.

It's two years old, but a favorite I had clipped out and pinned up for over a year. And unfortunately appropriate again.

I know Mallard Fillmore is completely ridiculous and nonsensical but there was a strip that ran a week or two ago that I still don't understand. I can't find it online but I remember the text.

First panel: Thank for calling "Federal Employees for Obama. How may I help you?"
Second Panel: "Why, yes, that is redundant! Thanks for noticing!"

What is Tinsley trying to say here? That Obama, as a Senator, is a federal employee? Or that every federal employee supports Obama? This one was more stupid than usual.

I like this one by Lukovich as well, even though it's a little dated now...

Whole collection here

What's kind of funny is I hadn't realized there was a very definite period of "mustached" presidents for a while there ...

Haha. I zeroed in on that immediately. It's like the facial hair gradually crept up and off their faces over time. (We were spared the hairy brow phase, luckily enough.)

I like this one alot. Two things, though. I don't remember Clinton having to beat an incumbent Johnny Carson. And, in all the representations I've ever seen of George Washington, I don't think I've ever seen him depicted as a young, slightly milquetoast "Peanut".

It's enough to make you wonder if McKinley ran on some "no facial hair platform" and that's what really prompted his assassination.

This could certainly explain why Johnson was impeached.

Cleveland had to grow ever so slightly more hair and 'stache before his second term, apparently.

I love the way he draws Clinton.

The Bush version is an embarrassment. I like the Obama version. It's thematically legitimate and appropriately potent to the level of achievement and vision Obama embodies in terms of the legacies of King and Lincoln. The Bush version is glorification based on the position alone, not the man.

That Bush one is unctious on several levels. The foremost being that the illustrator is obviously ignorant not only of our nation's actual history, but how Bush honestly fits in context with it.

There was definately no shortage of Lincoln/King "Return Of The Jedi" cartoons over the last week. For myself, I think the one yt posted transcends it's arguably overt sentimentality thanks to the artist. Lincoln reminds me of a doughy and grampa-y Royal Dano and King, well, King just looks like a Klump. Add the Mad-esque ears on Obama and it has a kind of childish sincerity and earnestness that puts it a tad above most of the other similar ones we've seen recently.

I'll grant it's elevated treacle quotient. But with regards to the Bush image(and most of the recent post election ones), I'd call it more "uniquely treacly."

I find the achievement gap between 43 and 44 kind of funny. Just in terms of winning the thing, we went from possibly the least impressive victory in our history (the son of a prior president is handed the presidency by the courts despite a popular vote loss to an incumbent vice whose boss had recently been impeached, then barely pulls off a wartime reelection) to what is almost certainly the most momentous presidential win ever, with the first real non-white contender winning an electoral landslide, and even flipping several states south of the Mason-Dixon. Regardless of how history ends up comparing their actual performances, the disparity in how hard they had to work for the chance to royally fuck up the country cannot be overstated*.

*although the argument could be made that W effectively worked just as hard to get Obama elected as he did on his own campaigns.

I'm ignorant too. What's wrong historically? Did Washington not turn into a ghost in real life?
