Dinosaur Jr. Advice

I don't know if anyone here has any expertise on this, but let's say I wanted to download the best, oh, 10 songs from the first two Dinosaur Jr. albums. Any suggestions? I notice that the Frampton cover is, for some reason, not included on Living All Over Me on eMusic, so that one's out.

Little Fury Things. God that song is great.

Little Fury Things
In a Jar
Freak Scene
Tarpit
Raisans

Honestly, I don't think I've ever heard the self-titled album.

Just get all of You're Living All Over Me.

Bingo. Also, the BBC sessions version of "Get Me".

The first Dinosaur Jr. album isn't much like anything that comes after it (I enjoy it specifically because it is devoid of Mascis' noodling), but it's still a damn good album. It's better than everything after Whatever's Cool With Me.

Severed Lips
Quest
The Leper
Forget the Swan
Repulsion

Thirded. I like a lot of their other stuff, but this is the one I always go back to.

Quadded. Just a fantastic album all around, and I have their entire discography.

Fifthed.

Also, as Tomas pointed out, the first album is much more low-fi and raw then a lot of their other albums...they were still figuring things out. Doesn't mean it isn't still incredibly good, but if you're relatively new to the band, get all of Bug...every track.

I already have Bug, and I heard Living All Over Me a couple times when it came out, but can't really remember any specific songs other than the Frampton cover. I liked them when they came out, but they never really caught my ear in the way some of the other bands at the same time (Pixies, Pussy Galore, Mudhoney) did. But I thought I might give their stuff another chance.

I know the first album is more punk rock and less distinctively their sound, but I'm curious to hear it.

Get as much of You're Living All Over Me that you can, and if you want to add a couple songs from their debut, I'd go with "Repulsion" and "Severed Lips".

Lose is great, and Barlow actually sings the 1st two songs on their debut. As far as Poledo goes though, I never really thought it belonged on You're Living All Over Me.

Thanks for the advice, all. So, for the last 10 mp3's I get this month, from the first album:
Severed Lips
Quest
The Leper
Forget the Swan
Repulsion

And from YLAOM:
Little Fury Things
In a Jar
Tarpit
Raisans

I was going to ask for one more rec from the latter, but then I realized that I have to get "Sludgefeast" just based on the title. But due to overwhelming enthusiasm of your reccomendations, I may go back and get the rest of YLAOM when my downloads refresh next month.

My first year of eMusic was spent getting a lot of early 80's stuff that I'd never gotten around to. Now that I've pretty much exhausted that stuff, I'm looking into some of the leftover "indie rock" stuff. I got Surfer Rosa, which I've always loved but didn't have a copy of. I've started going through Pavement, who I always liked but never really paid close enough attention too. Next up is Don Caballero, which I've actually never heard.

Don Cab is a weird next step.

You think? I really know almost nothing about the band other than people seem to like them.
Don't get me wrong, they're great. Or, to be more specific, Don Cab v.1 is great; Damon Che's reconstituted band as evidenced on World Class Listening Problem is not.

But the first record is more indie-influenced metal than anything else, while the subsequent discs (especially the intricate second one) are heavy, proggy mathy stuff.

Not really in line with the other bands you've been listening to is all.

Don Caballero is a weird next choice. I like all of the stuff pre new Cab. But if you are going to go with 1 album I would say go with What Burns Never Returns. But every album with Ian Wiliams and Mike Bandfield is great. Don Cab 2, What Burns and American Don are all great. Also, check out Battles if you dig Don Cab. Russ, did you hear the new Don Cab? It has vocals.

I saw the 'new' Don Cab here in ATL a couple years back, and I'm done with them. Think I heard a few of the tracks with vocals but this is one of the times where a band member's personality just puts me off. Che, by all accounts, is such a cunt that I give him no leeway. (And the people in Bellini are so great that his walking out on them is something I have a *really* hard time forgiving.)

And you should actually know Green Mind and then hit reverse.

Always kinda liked Dinosaur Jr, but never really got into them. I guess I was just more into a different trip at the time, and I'd probably appreciate them more these days.

Having said that, though, I reckon their "Missing Link" with Delthafunkyhomosapien one of the major highlights on a Judgment Night soundtrack filled with great moments.

I've seen Dinosaur Jr. From the standpoint of somebody in the first row at one of their concerts, who still can't see what's special about their albums, they were pretty good live. I don't dislike the band, I just...don't get what's so special about them.

Since I started this thread, I guess I should post back on my findings. Everyone was right: the first album isn't that good. And it's completely different from what I was envsioning in my head. I thought it would be sort of a half-way point between them being a standard punk band and the classic Dino Jr. sound. Instead, the songs sound pretty much like their later stuff, but the guitar is much more sedate, and since I think the over-the-top guitar stuff is their strength, I didn't care too much for it. But I did go back and get the rest of Living All Over Me, which is just all kick-ass.
