Harry Potter actor Daniel Radcliffe lost his virginity at 16 to an older woman, he has admitted in an interview likely to shock his army of young fans.

Last Updated: 11:27AM BST 04 Sep 2008

The age difference between them "wasn't ridiculous but it would freak some people out", he said. Radcliffe gave no clues as to the identity of the female in question.

The US magazine which printed his confession noted that he "celebrated reaching Britain's age of consent, 16, almost three years ago, in the customary manner, with an older girlfriend".

Radcliffe, 19, tends to date older women but is currently single because he doesn't have the time for a relationship, he explained.

Warner Bros, the film studio behind the record-breaking Harry Potter franchise, may be unimpressed with the young actor's comments.

His dream role would be to play a cross-dresser: "I think part of me would love to play a drag queen, just because it would be an excuse to wear loads of eye make-up."

He also made a risque joke, noting that the button fly on his jeans bore the designer label "Absolute Joy" because "that's what lurks beneath".

The interview with men's magazine Details - which features him as cover star and refers to him as "the virile Dan Radcliffe, he of the bare-torso cover shots" - is timed to coincide with his Broadway debut in Equus as troubled psychiatic patient Alan Strang.

The role, which he played to great acclaim in the West End, requires him to strip naked and marks a departure from his wholesome image as Harry Potter.

Radcliffe has just signed a $50 million contract to complete the last two films in the schoolboy wizard franchise, the article claimed.

"Whenever I can, I want to leave Harry there on the screen. I don't want to bring him into my normal life," Radcliffe said, although of the films he insisted: "They've been a laugh. They've been great.

For the most part I've been happy every single day. And all the times I've been unhappy, it's never been anything to do with Potter. It's just been the normal, boring teenage crap. Insecurities, acne - all the normal stuff."

While many teen stars go spectacularly off the rails, Radcliffe said his family has kept him grounded. "I've got a great family. We're a very tight-knit group - we work very well as a team and as a tribe. I owe it to that," he said.

His only vice is the occasional vodka and Diet Coke, and his only extravagance works of art "because that's the only thing I'm interested in that costs a lot of money".

He added: "I don't pretend to do anything particularly wild. People talk about rebellion and they say, 'Where is the teenage angst?' But I say I try to do it simply by the choices I make in the work I do.

"I just like wrong-footing people. I write poetry and I love it. I like being different from most people in my generation."

I'm glad he's grown into a well balanced guy. We've got to have some sort of hope for the next generation of leading men. I was really impressed with him in "My Boy Jack" last year, so hopefully he can keep at it.

The version of this I read said it was with a 23-year old woman during the production of Goblet of Fire. And look who was 23 around that time....

Perhaps someone should check to see if Mr. Radcliffe had offered any help to Helen Mirren in landing a role in the franchise. It's a pity she seems to frown on reporting these things.

Oh, Dame Maggie Smith, you sassy old thing you.

Not like he needs a pickup line, but may I suggest, "You want to be sorted into the House of Slipitin?"

(Sorry, that was awful)

Anyway, he talks about being different from his generation, but it sounds like he takes himself too seriously just like any other 19-year-old.

Daaaamn! That sure is a nice way to lose your virginity.

I also heard it was likely a 23-year old hair stylist on the set, but Fleur would have been so much better.

Then you could say she deFleured him.

Thank you thank you, I'll be here all week. Tip your waitress.

So, maybe it was awful.

Anyone think the controversial press from Equus' release is the reason the WB pushed POTTER to next summer? I've heard rumors. Personally, I think it's the WB trying to spread the wealth into next year due to not needing it in '08 (TDK), but...

EDIT: Or, as reported:

"new windows of opportunity that we wanted to take advantage of. We agreed the best strategy was to move Half-Blood Prince to July, where it perfectly fills the gap for a major tent pole release for mid-summer."

All in all, good for Daniel. I kind of expected he'd turn out gay, but no matter. Keep plowin' them bitches, Harry!
He's 19, he's rich, and he's Harry Potter. I hope that he's exhausted from all of the action that he's getting.
I still think he'll be gay.

Say what you will about the HP franchise, but I am so looking forward to seeing his output post-Potter.
Good point, but it's clear the guy doesn't need to work if he doesn't want to. Unless he somehow pisses it all away.

But Diet Coke and Vodka? Ewwwww.

And another note, what if it turned that the woman was Hellen Mirren?!

Agreed. He does have the chops and lots of potential (I caught My Boy Jack awhile ago - very good performance).

Be that as it may, I'm still thinking it was either Dame Maggie or Mrs. Weasley. What, never heard of a woman lying about her age? "She said she was 23, your honor!"

I have to agree with this as well. Of the three principals, he is the one that has matured into the better actor. I know that he was initially cast because of his physical resemblance to the character (especially the cover art depictions), but he's really become quite good.

I'm guessing it was probably both at the same time, but it was Dame Maggie who was given the honor of being the absolute first.

Potentially one of the best up-and-coming actors of his generation, and wielder of a strong pimp hand. Sky's the limit for this kid.

Sounds like the british version of Enotourage really.

In that case, the Citizen Kane Applause gif would have to be brought into play.

Vodka and coke tastes like diet coke. I know, I thought it would be gross too. Anyway, by conjecture, I'd guess that vodka and diet coke tastes like Coke Zero.

I'm glad I wasn't the only one to think of the Extras episode.

Radcliffe seems fairly balanced for someone who gets mobbed on a frequent basis. I'd imagine it's possible he lost his virginity accidentally during one of these very incidents.

I'd perfectly fill that gap with a major tent pole release, if you know what I mean?

For Pete's sake, Darkmite, there are children watching...come closer to the fence where they can see you.
