Its a cheap political stunt. But it might be savvy enough to work.

Could work, the key is really how Obama responds. I have no idea what he should do/say ...
Wow, this is a dick move. He can spin this all the way to the election.

"I thought the economy was more important than..."
Today, somebody will say something like this "Would Senator Obama have gone to a debate the same week after the 9/11 attacks"?

I can almost guarantee it.

I thought Lindsey Graham was going to just moments ago on CNN. (That guy is still around?) He ended up keeping it sane.

Then Rolf Blitzer thank him for "coming in". Even though it was a remote feed from the hallway on Capital Hill, where Lindsey was on his way to the little Republicans room to check tp levels.
There's still quite a few hours left in the day, I can almost guarantee will hear somebody say that. It's too obvious.

It's too transparent. Americans prefer strength over nobility and this makes it look like he's running scared.

No, but a surrogate can respond back that Senator Obama wasn't licking buttercream icing off of the bottom of a birthday candle while New Orleans was drowning.

Cross posting from the Election thread, even though anyone reading this is probably reading that too.

Obama says the debates are on, and if McCain doesn't show, get this--Obama will do a town hall debate.

Priceless.

How does this not end McCain's campaign? How is this still going? The American People WANT this debate. It's how many undecided voters make their final decision. Take into account all the states that having early voting and this is a gamble that will not pay off.
Well, I was reading an article (on Slate I think) saying that the debate typically only nets a difference of 1-2 percentage points in the polls anyway so there are a lot of other things that play a bigger role. Still, the debates are a pretty big deal. But McCain doing surprisingly well will most likely help him much more than Obama doing that. Especially since McCain sits there and builds up his oratory skills.

Huh? McCain isn't even going to debate camp like Obama. McCain is scrambling to get his poll numbers up and talking with Katie Couric. Yeah, if McCain does well, it will help him, but that sucker ain't preparing like he should be.

A Scrappy Fighter, McCain Honed His Debating Style in and Out of Politics

I'm not saying the guy doesn't know how to debate, but you have to know you're opponent and McCain isn't studying up on Obama like Obama is studying up on McCain.
Palin's going to be watching the debate from the Irish Pub in Philly. (It's where Rocky Jr. watched the cgi fight in Rocky Balboa).

McCain has a new excuse now for doing poorly in this debate. Remember, he was forcing bipartisan support to save the nation. Studying Obama was not a concern of his, not with the fate of America on the line. Country first! USA USA!

Sigh.

Who's writing this script, it needs more work.

HuffPo: Source Says Obama Will Make Debate A Townhall If McCain Doesn't Show

This seems like a sensible fallback position. It takes advantage of the preparations already made, and doesn't give ground to McCain and whatever fresh conditions he may extract from his fundament.

Imagine a 2 hrs session with a relaxed Obama. I could see him taking off his jacket and loosening his tie and proceed to sit down on the edge of the stage to get closer to the audience and taking their questions. A cosy, relaxed and intmate back and forth with the audience and the debate guy, shown to a 50 million strong TV audience.

I'd love to see Obama at one podium and a cardboard cutout of McCain next to him. The reporters will ask a question, get a thougtful answer from Obama, then the cameras switch to the cardbaord cutout and a cheap tape recording just repeats McCain saying "We must work with our Friends, and defeat our Enemies! VICTORY! NOT DEFEAT!"

And there's 90 minutes of this
Funnier if they had a muppet be the stand-in. I vote for this guy;

I was interested in this myself, and after a bit of Googling found this site: http://obamav.com/debates/mississippi.

Hopefully MSNBC or C-Span will also have feeds available to us outside the States.

Thanks! I think I'm going to go with plan B, which is watching it at my parent's house (after going to see Naomi Klein speak).

Isn't 3am the start of daylight over there in Viking country? It was when I was there a few months ago.

Not at this time of the year, after the summer months where it never really gets dark (northern Norway) this is probably the most "normal" period.
Then in november/december it gets really dark with only a few hours of daylight. Superfun, think Skarsgaard/Pacino in Insomnia.

Okay, so are they going to restructure the debate so that they're discussing the economy? Because it really seems stupid to discuss foreign policy when Americans are panicking over our current financial situation.
Well, this debate has a lot of "9 minute" segments where the candidates are supposed to be able to address each other directly, freely, so it seems they can always bring it up.

Of course the questions will change, but it seems they have some freedom already built on this new format (which some of the debate comission people were really excited about)

It was on his site before he announced he was going to the debate. Someone found it there. It also showed up as a web ad.

Yet more evidence that his people do not have the slightest clue what they are doing. Unless they are just setting the bar so low he can't help but exceed the dismally lowered expectations. "Stupid like a fox," indeed.

If he already won the damn thing why should we still watch?

I'm going to be completely shocked if the radio pack doesn't make a second appearance at the VP debate, if that is still happening, given how frightened they are of the prospect of Palin ever going off script.
"Radio Pack"? I have my doubts. I make radios for, among other people, the US government. There's no need to sling one on your back, they're about the size of credit cards. And those are the big obsolete ones. We make them smaller now (1.25” x 2.0” x .25”), and if you wanted to get an even smaller one that fit in your ear, you could. Not from me, but they're out there.

I think it was armour, what with Bush being so well-liked and everything.

CNN's talking about their little approval meter thing, the results of which will be broadcast live in real time. That's nifty.

So, live comments in this thread?
Here in the UK I will be staying up til 2 to watch this, though I am getting drunker so I am warning you that any jokes or comments I make may not be as witty or correctly spelled as is ideal.

McCain is going in at a suddenly terrible low point, and with an Alaskan moose hanging round his neck. He also seems to be aging a year every week, so the lighting and make-up will be a factor.

I have been suspicious since his convention speech that he doesn't actually want to win this, and will be looking for more kamikaze behaviour. And of course POW stories and military analogies.

It's Obama's best chance to shake off his mostly unfounded 'can't talk without a teleprompter' criticism. But he must be going into this feeling good. And so am I. Don't let us down Bam-Bam!
