ER - The Final Year

Angela Bassett is taking over the chief resident role previously occupied by Romano and Weaver.

Reports have them bringing almost everyone back -- even Mark Greene (Anthony Edwards) for a flashback sequence. Also, Noah Wyle will be back for four episodes and so will Shane West. No word as to whether or not David Krumholtz will return.

I was a big ER fan, especially of the early seasons. I think the show pretty much went off the rails after Greene died -- they were unable to find as good an anchor for the show as him, despite large parts of it being Carter's story. But it's been on for so long, I'm interested in seeing how it all plays out.

My prediction is that they'll get Clooney back, but it will be a top secret finale appearance.

It will be Clooney holding the snow globe with Pitt and Damon asking what he's daydreaming about.

ER is still on? Really?

It's set in outer space now.

LOL!

Said it before, but for me, the show derailed when they fucked up Peter Benton's character.

Rath is right, it was something special the first couple of seasons.

This may be controversial, but I honestly don't think there's been a tv episode that's done more for an actor's career in the last 20 years than "Hell and High Water." Clooney was great in the first season, but he was still in the realm of "great for TV." That episode was the one where he said, "yep, I'm a fucking movie star."

Benton travels alone to some place, discrimination arouses. Greene's cancer. This shows is a proverbial resume of jump the shark moments.
Talk about jumping the shark..don't they have fucking John Stamos on now?!
I started to lose interest when Greene's cancer came back. They completly killed it...and the shit came back.

Well, cancer does do that sometimes.

Seriously, I had no idea. It's been a long time since I even heard anyone talk about it.
I lost interest when Dr. Kovac showed up. Just did not like the character, and hated the fact that they forced practically every woman on the show to get involved with him and his moody bullshit.
I got tired of how not a single character is allowed to be happy. Hey, Abby's married and has a kid, let's make her an alcoholic again! Hey, Carter found someone he loves and wants to be with forever, let's kill his baby and make his girl hate him! And didn't Shane West get killed by the el train or something?

I'll probably watch the finale to see the hospital explode but that's about it.

My exact thoughts. No happy rule. Abby's mother subplot was miserable.

No West just became a double amputee.

and this goes back to my issue with Greene. He was finally happy, had a good family, reconciled with his 1st daughter. Then Blammo Cancer is back with a vengance and he dies in Hawaii.

Really though if you think about it Ross and Hathaway did finally have a happy ending.
Double amputee? Jesus they even ripped off Paul Crane's arm removal by helicopter.

Has that hospital gone through every conceivable disaster short of asteroid hitting it?

That's the grand finale, Ed.

As for Clooney, Rath, got on board the fan club during that early episode where he punched out the child abuser. (Sees a shoeprint on the girl's back, goes into the waiting room, lifts the guy's foot, finds a match...and then wham!) It was such a 'fuck yeah!' moment. Doug Ross was almost Han Solo cool.

Ironically, that might be the only full episode I've seen of the show. Though I did watch the live episode in 1997 for curiosity's sake.

Like Friends, I'll probably watch the finale for the hell of it.

Eli Mitchell should be guest star too. She should break the fourth wall: hey do you remember me? I played a lesbian and now you are drolling every second I am in LOST. Isn't that hot?

I still remember that scene. Also: Clooney doing crazy medical stuff in the middle of a storm, near a sewer.
Canada gets this 2 hours ahead apparently so I realize that it's not over yet for most of you guys, but that opener was pretty terrible. Tuned in for the first time since Carter left and wasn't impressed. 15 years is a long time to come up with new ideas, but it seems like every character is sorta loosely based on someone who came before. Time to put this to bed. Looking forward to the cameos tho
post #22 of 62
I've been with the show since the beginning. I won't say it's all been good since it hasn't (i.e. Thandie Newton, tank rampages, etc.), but I have to admit tonight's episode really affected me, almost in the same way as Dr. Greene's farewell episode (so happy he's returning albeit for a flashback). I didn't realize I liked Pratt that much, but then maybe the episode was just emotionally manipulative. At least I'm still meant to hate Nephew Anspaugh with a passion.

Regarding the unhappy rule, I always thought the cancer comeback was some sort of bad karma for when Dr. Greene let his wife's stalker/would-be-attacker die in the elevator. Still, I hated to see him ago. I agree completely with Rath's original post.

And speaking of Dr. Greene, it always bothered me that Ross and Hathaway weren't shown at Dr. Greene's funeral. FFS, Michal Ironside was there!

Quick question: When they were taking Pratt upstairs to harvest his organs, was the music an arrangement of the original theme? You'd think they'd at least bring that back for the final season.

Argh, I'm babbling. Sorry.
Whoa wait they killed Pratt?

He was the one character I liked on the show as of late.
Really don't like them killing off Pratt. He was the least fucked up of any main carachter on the show. And he was a really likeable guy. But it was really telegraphed from last seasons finale (about to be offerd the ER Chief position, gonna propose to his GF, getting closer to his brother, etc...) but I guess it just follows the ER axiom...nobody can leave the place happy/alive.

And the toasted him with fucking cheese sticks...what the hell
post #25 of 62
I assume they are going to kill off one character an episode. Who's next? I'm guessing it's going to be one of the nurses. Bye-bye, Puerto Rican nurse whose name I never learned.
I'm pissed, Pratt is the only one I liked! Why should I continue watching? Sam is the one who should of gotten the axe. Why did Greg have to leave, everything was falling into place. I hope to see him on another gig soon, he reminds me of my sister in law's boyfriend. So I guess I could look at him and think of Greg Pratt.

It was just so sad to see that tear roll down his face knowing that he was probably not going to make it. BOO HOO I am still crying!!!
I do remember the fucked up way they killed Omar Epps. Guy kills himself by throwing himself in front of an EL Train and they kept paging him and it turns out the guy on the gurney is him.

BTW is Kubiak still working there?
Oh my gosh, Hocken this is so weird. My sister is the only one I know that still watches the show so I kept bugging her to hurry up and watch it...I needed some therapy. So I finally talked to her today and she said, "yeah, that was pretty bad." Then she said, "why do they kill all the black guys off so sadly? Remember how they killed off Omar Epps?" We talked about that for a while and she gave me some insight. She is in the medical field and she said that ER comes up with some crazy stuff. It was funny to see your post after I just talked about that with my sister. She told me to keep watching, I have invested all these years into this show and what...I am not going to watch anymore??? So I guess I will. Kovac (the Bosnian) is still there but he and Abby are going to leave in the next couple of episodes.

Thanks for the comment. I am feeling better.
Well at least Abby and Kovac made it out intact. Who's next to fade away?

I half expected a semi truck or run away ambulance to come out of no where and plow into Abby and Euro Clooney. But it is nice to see someone get out safely.

My guess is the only other happy ending we see is with Carter and maybe Morris. Everybody else is gonna die or have their lives totally fucked over.

The wall was a nice touch though, i liked that.

Yeah I liked that too, but there were a few names I didn't recognize/remember. Of course, I can't remember them now either. Anyone have a screengrab?
Bump.

Just caught up on the last 3 episodes on DVR. I think it's safe to say the final few episodes will pack quite the emotional wallop, what with Carter back and apparently on kidney dialysis. He was always my favorite character.

Carter is basically dead man walking at this point.

Maybe that's the writers way of agreeing that ending the show with Green's death would have been the optimal way to go out. Or I could be projecting.

NO ONE GETS OUT ALIVE.

Looks like Neela gets whacked this week.
So now it's out in the open about Carter's problem. Felt like seeing an old friend, what with him working in the ER again. I hope he lives.

He's just picking up some shifts while he searches for a new kidney that I'm gonna guess resides in Clooney or Margules.

I absolutly hate that they are reviving the Ray/Neela story line. I hoped it was as gone as Ray's legs.
Isn't Benton coming back, too? Maybe Benton gives it to him.

I can't remember if anyone donated blood to him when he was stabbed in season 7. At least then we'd know who could possibly give him a kidney.

My bad, the new preview was a bit clearer so it appears Morris' cute new girlfriend is gonna get mowed down. Even money she gets taken out because Morris made an issue out of the suspect beating.

I'd lay money that Carter dies by the end of the season, too.
Holy shit...reading through this thread, I gotta wonder who the Hell would wanna be an ER doc, EVER. It sounds like the absolute saddest show in the history of T.V. Well that and NYPD Blue. damn.
Yeah, there is some pretty fucked up stuff in this show. By my count only 4 people have ever escaped the ER without some major personal tradgey coming their way...Clooney, Euro Clooney and the two Nurses they were in love with. And even then Abbey and Euro Clooney were in a pretty bad place.

The "no one here gets out alive" running joke is funny because it's also why ER is maybe the workplace drama taken to its most extreme. The show has literally been so much about the job that the characters aren't allowed to have lives outside of it. They have to do the job until it kills them, like it killed Mark Greene and Romano and a bunch of others. You aren't allowed to quit, and you're not allowed to have kids or a wife. The job is what matters, and unlike Law & Order, which gets around that by simply not delving into characters personal lives, this show seems determined to destroy as many lives as possible to "prove" that point.
So, wait, the cop girlfriend survives?! I guess the soul-crushing defeat of Morris will come when she rehabs, flips out that Archie wants her to move in, and leaves him crying and alone.

Are they bringing everyone back to give Carter a viking funeral or what? They sure are playing at Clooney coming back. Did he finally relent?
Clooney is supposedly going to be in the March 12th episode, the one Margulies is in. Apparently Benton will be in it too.

Not sure about Clooney but to say "ALL of your favorites from E.R.'s past seasons will return." SHOULD mean that Clooney will appear. Of course NBC's marketing has shit the bed with promises like that before.

As far as Morris, I bet they drop a chopper on him just to remind me of how pissed I was at Romano going out like that.

Thanks for the info. I do not get much internet time with my job being so busy lately so I was clueless.

And they better not drop a chopper on Archie's head.

Yeah, Entertainment Weekly has a picture of Clooney on set.

Clooney's this week. Honestly, I could care less about the show at this point, even with the Cavalcade of Stars this season, but I'm really interested to see whether it's a cameo a la the last time he did the show, or they give him actual stuff to do. I'm hoping for the latter, because I'd really like to see how Clooney plays Ross a decade down the line.

He should punch an abusive parent, just for old time's sake.
