I wanted to check this out forever, and I noticed the newish Harper edition collecting all of the black and white issues of McCloud's series. I'm about halfway through now, and I have to say that it's really good. It really toes the line well between different tones and different story types. While it does where its references on its sleeve, Zot! does have enough originality to set it apart and be affecting on its own merits.

The back cover really flaunts the manga, superhero, and alternative influences, but more than that I get a "Little Nemo" vibe from the proceedings so far, and McCloud is drawing just as much from those classic comics and non comics art as anything else. Good stuff.
