NHL 2008-2009 season and the 3rd jerseys!

Most of the third jerseys are getting unveiled this week in NHL land.

The Carolina Hurricanes jersey will be revealed on Sept 10th. Its supposedly black and has the weathered hurricane flag logo in the middle.

Preseason starts in a couple of weeks too. Who is ready for some Hockey??!!

Me like hockey....
Got my home opener tickets for the Lightning game already, sadly I wont be making the trip to Prague for the season opener...ever so slightly out of my price range(they had a package deal on their website with both games and two nights at a hotel for $2000 not including airfare, what a bargain!).

I hope they have a better third jersey than their original, that thing was pretty terrible. I think they only ever actually wore it for one game.

Penguins vs. Senators, Oct. 4th in Stockholm! Can't wait!
I suppose I'm ready. Good thing I already own an approximation of the Sabres' third jersey (rumor is it's a slightly modified version of the original logo).

Be interesting to see how the Sabres are treated in the local media if the Bills keep playing well.

I'm looking forward to see how Wrigley Field gets fitted for the Winter Classic as well. Who wants to take bets on an Obama appearance if he wins the election?

Center Ice packages were also announced. $160 to preorder Center Ice.

Damn my cable bill is going to be high for the next 4 months. Tempted to get tickets to the Hurricanes Oilers game (since Erik Cole would be coming back to Carolina to play.)

But I have buy one get one free vouchers for tickets for later in November and December that I will definately put to good use.
I don't live in DC anymore, but I'm hoping to catch a few games of the Crapitals.

GO PENS.

Here it is. And it looks nice.

Buy one get one free vouchers? Really? I'd figured the fanbase in Carolina would have grown a bit since the Cup win. (I hope that doesn't sound like sour grapes, because it's not intended to be.) Oh well, keep fighting the good fight and spreading the word.

Still waiting for the Thrashers to unveil their third jersey...

Have the Leafs and Senators unveiled their jerseys?

Bertuzzi's with Calgary now. Interesting.

Almost bought a new jersey yesterday... but didn't.

Went to the Caniac Carnival and the family did buy tickets to the EDM/CAR game where Erik Cole will return and play (should be a sellout game).

We also bought tickets to a Washington Capitals game. 2 Lower level seats for $70 using a BOGO FREE coupon. Awesome!

while the season has technically started for some teams, Center Ice won't start until Thursday night as well as Versus touting Oct 9th as Opening Night.

After a tease this past Sunday, I can't wait to finally start watching some games.

Can I just say "Fuck Detroit" and be done with it for the season?
I love how the Leaf coach said that the bar is set so low for that organization that they could trip on it.

Let's get some predictions going guys. Time for us to kick start this thread into high gear.

I now my teams NOT going post season are as follows:

Toronto Mapleleafs
New York Islanders
Tampa Bay Lightning
Florida Panthers
Atlanta Thrashers

As for rankings, I can't imagine anyone better than the Habs, Bruins and Flyers. The rest are a complete toss up, in rankings.

Fearless Prediction? Ottawa or Pittsburgh miss the post season.

There is the possibility that they aren't as hungry as last year. One of the many things Scotty Bowman used to do after winning a Cup was stock the team with a great balance of hungry bodies. Marian Hossa, the mercenary, doesn't count. I'm talking young, FRESH, hungry guys. One of the reasons I don't think this is Montreal's year is that they sent down Pacioretti and Weber. Those guys are STARVING young bucks. Latendresse, Begin and, as I HATE to say, Kostopoulous don't have a place on this squad this year.

Look at the fact that without Lidstrom, who went down with an injury in February, the Red Wings were a .500 team, who had GREAT difficulty getting past the 1st round. They were very close to NOT being the champs. as well-run that organization is, nothing is guaranteed.

What kind of fucking Bizarro World do we live in where the Leafs beat the defending Champs on their turf, the night they raise their banner?

Maybe it was Def Leppard?

It's kinda weird, as for what I've seen, Detroit was dominating the play. Luck, I guess. Who is left in Toronto anyway?

Kostopoulos ain't that bad on a 4th line. where else would you place the goon? The 4th defensive line, with Kostopoulos, who's made a some great work in the playoffs and another defensive forward.

Latendresse is getting on my nerves, and I wouldn't be surprised to see Pacioretti or Weber come out and replace him or Begin.
I agree. To scratch Tom for all he did in the playoffs last year would be another reason people wouldn't sign here as a UFA. I would love to believe that there's a place for him past January, but I just don't think so.

Begin is useless now. Injury prone. Everybody else blocks shots, so automatically he's the odd man out. Don't even get me started on Dandeneault, poor guy. They should give him away for a 140th round draft pick.

In my area Versus HD bizarrely shares a channel with the Golf channel. About the most disappointing thing you can run into when expecting a good hockey game is tuning in to see golf. 90% of the time they show the hockey game but apparently first game of the season(in America) isnt enough to time delay an amatuer tournament.

On a seperate note, Ive found this place to be a fairly reliable place to find the third jerseys. The new Lightning jersey is absolute, uninspired garbage...but I guess that fits with their first two games of play too(not counting two good goaltending performances).

Begin is useless now that there's a real goon in the team. Dandenault is table scraps indeed, and Lapierre ain't that great either.

yeah I have VersusGolfHD also. what sucks is that during the hockey game it will have momentary blackouts, as you can tell they are overlaying the hockey feed OVER the womens LPGA golf. But I got to see DEF LEPPARD in HD man!

CBC's new Hockey Night in Canada theme has been chosen!

Alberta entry is golden in Hockey Night anthem challenge
School teacher Colin Oberst takes home $100,000 and half of lifetime royalties

Last Updated: Saturday, October 11, 2008 | 6:08 PM ET

Canadian Gold is the new Hockey Night in Canada anthem.

After 14,871 entries flooded in and thousands of voters cast their ballots for each of the two finalists, a Celtic-themed piece by Beaumont, Alta.'s Colin Oberst was chosen to introduce Canada's longest-running television program

His victory was announced on Saturday's Hockey Night broadcast featuring Toronto hosting Montreal and Vancouver in Calgary.

Toronto teenager Robert Fraser Burke's Sticks to the Ice finished second.

"I'm thrilled that it's an ordinary Canadian whose passion for hockey will be forever associated with the show," said Scott Moore, executive director of CBC Sports. "The process has shown the passion that Canadians have for hockey, Hockey Night in Canada and for music.

"I think it's so appropriate that such a passionate hockey fan is the final winner."

Oberst is an elementary school teacher who also doubles as an avid music writer and member of an Edmonton band.

He takes home the $100,000 top prize and half of the lifetime royalties, with the other 50 per cent invested by the CBC in minor hockey across the country.

Burke, the 13-year-old son of a music teacher, is a pianist who sings in a choir and performs in the school band.

The contest to find new theme music for Hockey Night in Canada was launched June 19 by CBC Sports after it didn't renew the rights to The Hockey Theme, which were subsequently purchased by CTV Inc.

Each of the five semifinalists in the anthem challenge were profiled on The Hour with George Stroumboulopoulos and later on the Hockey Night In Canada Anthem Challenge special, when the original compositions — produced by Bob Rock, a multiple Juno Award winner — were played in their entirety.

"You just get this overwhelming sense of pride," Oberst said while working with Rock at the taping of the theme in Toronto. "Everything just jelled into this amazing song that went way over my expectations."

Went to the Lightning game tonight for the home opener against the Canes and it felt like two different games split right down the middle. The first half was awesome for the Bolts with some nice goals and great saves by Smith...and then it went downhill fast as they gave up a 3 goal lead to loose in the last 20 seconds of overtime. After the third goal by the Canes, Mike Smith looked like he was ready to kill his own teammates for being incapable of clearing the zone and smashed his stick in two on the crossbar before getting a warning by the ref. Id never seen a goalie stick break like they before.

Also strange, they had the Rays baseball game on in the concourse area and luxury boxes so everytime something happened in that people would respond. It made for an odd experience to have the crowd go wild while all I see is a chip in on a line change.
I loved the 6-1 thrashing the Leafs took last night. 5-0 ten minutes into the second. Leafs score then a minute later Montreal scores again. I love hearing Leaf fans try and defend loses and the team. It's pathetic.

As a Canes fan, that was the most amazing comeback.
And we have now 2 comback from behind victories, giving us a 2-0 record. The bad news is that Tampa Bay and Florida are supposed to be the 2 worst teams in the Eastern conference, so that doesnt say much about the Hurricanes. The Canes need to get their goalies to play good defense for 60 minutes.

I hear ya loud and clear. What's even more awesome is that douche Blake pumping his fist after he scored that one and only. When you are down 5-0, you don't do a drop-to-one-knee/fist pump combo. You do what Kovalev did. You score, you turn around, congratulate your guys, and head to the bench.

FUCK Blake is a dorkchop. Sauteed in lamesauce.
Fuckin' Avs. Dominated both games, outshot both Boston and Edmonton 2-1 and they still lost both games in the last 3 minutes. And in the case of Edmonton the last 5 SECONDS.

btw...I really dig the Thrashers new thirds...
The best part of last nights Habs/Flyers game was the fact I turned to my wife during the second period and said "it's like the Canadiens are taking their time and waiting for mistakes on Philly's end." Then the mini-floodgate opened. I love this shit.

Bring on the BRUINS.

Also, Hollweg should not be allowed to play in the NHL. The guy is a piece of shit. I love how Murray totally called him out, post-game. Hollweg is inconsequential. Just like his organization.
Sergei Kostityn is impressive, and his teamup with Lang and Kostopoulos is aces. Fuck me. We have 3 grade-A lines, when we spent years struggling to have one.
Yeah, my friend. True DAT. This team, when at full strength (Higgins and Laracque) this will be a team that's got 4 grade-A lines. Aside for the Samsonov signing (which you can't really FAULT Gainey for), Has he done anything wrong?

The Islanders would like a word with you, sir, if that game I saw yesterday was any indication. I know DiPietro was hurt, but, my god...

I'm pleased so far with the Sabres (gotta love when the new guy comes in and takes charge), but it is, after all, only October. Still, I'll take the points any way they come.

The Blackhawks fired Denis Savard today, and replaced him with Joel Quenneville.

Bitter/sweet.

Quenneville with yet another chance, eh? I was hoping that the constant re-hiring of "alright" coaches was done.

I was watching the thrashers/NJ game last night and I was shocked. I know that not many people go to the Thrasher games, as evident to all the empty seats. But then the announcers said that there was a All You Can Eat Seats for $38. Lower level seats for $38 and ALL YOU CAN EAT???!! Dude, I thought about driving down for a game.

Holy shit! That's a great deal.

Be interesting to see if there's a 50/50 split of fans at tomorrow's Sabres-Thrashers game. I'm wondering at what point I should get excited about these guys (Thomas Vanek is on FIRE, which never hurts)...
The whole team is doing PDG. The Eastern Conference has a lotta early surprises. Even Toronto has surprised me. I figured they'd start off at least 0-15. Saturday nights game 'tween the Habs and Coyotes was heavy duty. NEVER have I seen someone hide the way Sauer did from Laracque. What a chicken shit.
Sauer knew he was dead the moment Kostitsyn didn't got up. And let's be honest here; Laracque is THE goon of the league. I loved to see the effect he had on a team that had 3, and yet chickened out, only for one of them to fight and be obliterated near the end.

Damn, we're overdue to go to Champs.

Well, the Flyers never were a deeply talented bunch before, so you win like you can I guess.... (read: The Flyers are the all-time shittiest NHL team. Over Toronto.)

As for the Carolina-Montreal game, what a weird game that was. From the abundance of missed open net goals, to Carolina's lucky 2nd goal, to the great overtime sequence (props to Ward and those 3 guys), that was truly a fun one to watch.
Thread Starter
I'm glad you thought it was fun. This game was a disaster to watch. Neither team looked good. Montreal couldn't hit the side of a barn or they would have beat us by 5-2.

The penalties for both teams were outrageous and how can the refs give Montreal a penalty shot and not Carolina for the exact same play of blocking the puck in the crease??

regardless we got a point in an overtime game. I'll take it.
Bah, I'd rather laugh at it than cry. Montreal still ain't playing at full strength like last year, and I'm waiting for that. The Kovalev line is still sleeping in.

As for referring, the most pressing thing is the head blows problem that's been plaguing the game. The morons who says that it's the players job the look forward instead of the puck never played hockey, or else you'd know what the game is about. First, settle that, then let's focus on those poor calls.
Thread Starter
trust me, The head blows is a touchy subject for Carolina after Sutter got concussed. Sutter is the future of the NHL and he got waxed by Dougie Weight. Yes it was legal, but damn he wasn't playing the puck at all.
