NHL 2008-2009 season and the 3rd jerseys! - Page 3

Modano is having a great year. He has been the MVP of the team so far.
I can't believe I just watched an entire period of hockey without changing the station. Good to have the Blackhawks back.

If the Hawks get up by 4 I expect a major brawl. They are itching to fight.

Do they always sing the Canadian Anthem before all hockey games?
That was a nice hit sending that one Red Wings player (forgot the name) up and over.

Yeah, there's gonna be a brawl. Go Hawks.
sucks Hawks lost. Looks like a 4the seed at best.
That may have been the first entire regular season hockey game I've watched in more than a decade. The outdoor game is a great idea.
It is. Still pissed that I missed out on tickets for last year's game.

So, do they go Canadian in 2010? Calgary versus Vancouver to start the pre-Olympic hype?

My guess would be the new Yankee Stadium. Rangers vs Flyers.
Oilers are as crappy as ever this season. I can only hope they turn it on just a tad bit sooner than last year.
Flyers have been pulling hard for one of these. Anya has a good idea; also, Gov. Rendell has lobbied for Flyers/Pens at Penn State.

These games have just been wonderful. I hope this game cements an annual tradition.
I'm assuming the next one will be a West Coast Canada game.

We're gonna be right behind ya with a 5th or 6th.

I'll tell ya though, that Yankee Stadium ordeal is probably going to be it for next years Winter Classic. I'm really glad popularity is rising in the NHL again.

if the Canes actually win tonight, we will be ahead of the Penguins in the east coast rankings?? wow.
Playoffs!? Don't talk to me about Playoffs?! Playoffs?!

We should have had last night. Oh well.

Wait? What?

I'm also guessing a Western Game, but I'm going with a Calgary/Edmonton game. But what I'd love to see is a classic Boston/Montreal game.

I got a Pens powder blue Malkin jersey for Christmas ... which I now spend my evenings crying into. Something needs fixed with this team because letting Sid and Geno's talent go to waste is not an option.

As much as I like the Penguins, the blue shirt is a proof of hatred. It's San Jose-lite, and the Sharks have the Californian settings going for them. Not so much for the Steel City Penguins.

Need another win for mah boys tonight.

But it's not like they pulled the blue out of their asses. That was their original jersey color, so it's kind of a throwback thing. I like 'em. (Plus, I already had a black and gold Crosby one.)

Hurricanes win again! and they beat the NJ devils who was also on a winning streak. The Sutter family must be torn as Brandon's team beat his dad's!

I know it's their original shirt, but it's butt-ugly. But, props for the Malkin. He's the one they'll keep later on.
Now THAT'S how you beat a team you're supposed to beat. Go Habs Go.

Fucking Maple Queefs.
Not to sound knee jerky, but I think it is time for Tippett to go. And Hull / Jackson. Modano is the only saving grace on the Stars, and he is 38!

Yes, Neal has potential, but honestly, what else do we have? I have never been a fan of Morrow, so please don't throw that name in there.

Yes, I am utterly disgusted by the lackluster Stars. And do NOT tell me "You cannot expect to beat Detroit. You never do!" I will be forced to use a spoon to excavate your liver.
I think the Stars are doomed until they get a real goalie. Turco has been a choker, save for what, ONE season? I like him and all, but they'll never get anywhere with him.

Maybe it's time to bring Avery back

Modano is far from being a pillar in this team. And yes Morrow is good. Now you have Brad Richards and Mike Ribeiro, who are also great. What this team needs, like Fab said, is a goalie, and good management. Brett Hulls sucks ass at his job.
All good points and I agree. I am just a little pissed at how they have been playing. But I still do not like Morrow. Yes, I long for the days of Guy and Company! But don't we all reflect on the best years?
All times have their ups and downs. Some longer than others. We had a down of 12 years that ended in 2004-2005. Guess it's karma for winning so much before hand.

And the fact that with so many (useless)teams the talent is quite diluted....

Phoenix? 2 teams in Florida? Nashville? Christ... at least Minnesota got a team back.

Are you from Dallas? Or, do you listen to KTCK? Very weird you bring up the points about Nashville, FL, etc because Razor Reaugh came on this morning and was talking about the very same thing. Those teams are about to go under.
Nope. I'm from Hockey City. As indicated by the name above my post count.

Still, it's kinda obvious that these southern teams are temporary ones.

EDIT: They deserves cities that follow hockey. As much as Winnipeg is a hole, it didn't deserve to lose the Jets. Nor Québec.
Doh, I should pay attention a little more, eh?
I'll weigh in my 2 cents on the state of franchises in this league... I think there'll always be ONE team in Florida from here on in, simply due to the fact that Florida has a HUGE Québec community down there. i'd say that if a team were to go, it's be the Panthers, and in a perfect world, Tampa would absorb them. Nashville & Columbus are only going to last another season or two (one if the economy remains this bad). I'm kinda surprised that there isn't all that much talk about Columbus and how bad it is out there. You hear about Atlanta and Carolina all the time (Carolina deserves a better fate, having a Cup banner and all) with good reason, but I personally never hear about the state of the BlueJackets.

If I were in charge, I'd axe 3 teams per conference. Relocate 2 of the six to get the Canadian representation back up where it belongs, and then contract the others and split up their assets in a lottery.

Phoenix is a completely different story. They have a fan base, surprisingly, but never amount to anything, and the fanbase they have seem to have run out of patience. When they win, people come out to see them.
I forgot about Columbus and Atlanta....

I didn't bitch about Carolina because of the banner, but each time the Habs play there half the seats are empty.

Shame.
It is, but it wasn't really any better in Whale Town either. Some markets aren't made for Hockey.

Like Toronto.

Ha.

Thats no lie. I went to the game against the Habs the week before last and it was easily half full of their fans. Makes for a slightly less entertaining experience to feel like your at a road game but it was still fun(despite the narrow loss). As for your prediction of which Florida team should remain I also agree although Im obviously biased. However even with the Lightning's current abysmal record they still average over 90% attendance according to ESPN which puts them in the top ten in the NHL versus Florida having one of the worst at just over 80%. In a place where naturally occurring ice would cause people to think the world was coming to an end this will clearly always be a small market team but I dont think they are doing so badly(financially) as to expect the team to fold simply because it seems like an odd place for the sport.

Having said all that the new owners have destroyed plenty of fan support with invasive, poor decisions trying to run their own personal fantasy league or something so ask me again in a year or two if we even want a team anymore.

well Florida beat the Canes last night and jumped up above the Penguins in the Eastern conference (they have the same amount of points).

New Jersey got beat down by Atlanta like 5-0. So its topsy-turvy world right now in the NHL.
The Pens have been having a rough time in the last three weeks or so getting wins. They dont have any major injuries Im aware of with the exception of Ruslan Fedotenko breaking his hand earlier this week but hes not exactly the core of their scoring. Here, aside from the Lightning games we get about half the Bruins games and half the Sabres games but thats about it so I havent seen much of them(Until NBC starts showing games again next month which will no doubt be mostly Pens games like last year). What have they been doing differently to be on such a downward slope after a good start?

You got that right. We lost to Anaheim...at home.

Worst part was I was there. Regardless, I had a hell of a time last night for it being my first Ducks game. Can't wait to go back.

It's ALWAYS good when the Bs beat the Habs.

well Carolina dropped 3 for 3 road games with a thrashing by OTTAWA?? last night.

completely awful.
I refuse to knee jerk after this home and home with Detroit. Though Dallas played a nice game, I still feel Detroit dominated both. I truly feel there will be a repeat this year.

Not a bad match. The Habs were actually better than the Bruins this time. One bad penalty call (the 5 minutes to Kostitsyn - uncalled for), but Thomas saved the day like 5 times. What an amazing goalie. And it's nice that Boston finally has a team.
I don't think Thomas is amazing, more like he's just having a good year, after a string of really bad ones. I think the term is "Horseshoe Year". He'll be back to being a fat Roger Clemens lookalike during or after the playoffs this season
post #142 of 470
Well, this year he's both fun and frustrating to watch.

Now, can we get Lecavalier? Pretty please?

No doubt they'll choke it up vs the Habs in the playoffs, as tends to be their M.O.
Keeping an eye on my division... I can't say I like the situation but it's not bad either...

Oilers, The Wild and the Avs all have 45 points, while the nucks have 49 and more games, and the Flames are dominating with 56 points. At this point everyone is in the race from my top three teams (Oilers, Nucks, and if I have to and there's nobody left, Flames) should be good run to the playoffs.

How great is it that Boston is a good team again at the same time the Habs are? The biggest rivalry in hockey is coming back full force for the next few years.
Which is the bigger rivalry though? Leafs/Habs or Bruins/Habs?
Leafs/Habs. Toronto is basically a city that thinks their team was great. Boston had past glories, and they have now. And while they're opponents, I respect them.

Unlike the pieces of shit Leafs.

Bruins/Habs for sure. They have a long history of meeting in the playoffs.

EDIT: Leafs suck.
I'd love for the league to go back to the old Wales/Campbell setups for the conferences, putting the Leafs in an opposing conference. I'd like for the Habs to be the ones to kick them out of the 1st round. I'd like that annual responsibility.

I'll take the Bruins over the Leafs any day of the week though. Obnoxious fans aside (who doesn't have obnoxious fans?), at least the folks in Beantown know what hockey IS. The douchebags in Toronna will pay any price to watch their team lose over and over, and champion their efforts.
I think last nights Caps Penguins game hopefully put a lid on the Crosby Ovechkin debate for a bit.
