Why the delayed releases and high prices for last season's TV dvd sets?

Seriously, I need to wait till November or December for:
LOST season 4 (Dec 9, 2008)
BONES season 3 (Nov 18, 2008)
SCRUBS season 7 (Nov 11, 2008)

1st off, we got truncated seasons last year due to the writers' strike, and now I have to hold off watching the beginning of the new '08 season, so I can catch up with last seasons' eps?

And some of these shows are charging full price for their 2/3 of a season???

Atleast SUPERNATURAL season 3 (which I paid nearly $40 for... only got 16 eps) and THE OFFICE season 4 were out before the premieres. WTF.

Did the strike prevent them from participating in the creation of the interactive dvd menues?

And no, I don't like watching them online on my computer. I prefer to sit at my couch. Guess it's time for a DVR.

To promote piracy?

LOST doesn't start until next year and those other two shows are garbage. What's the problem?

Ah, the LOST premiere was news to me.

And my wife and I like the other 2 shows... thanks.

Do you or your wife really need to own those shows? Is it just preference? How many times do you really need to watch the same episode of Bones? Have you realized that Netflix and TV on DVD go hand-in-hand? And I'm not trying to start an argument either. Any TV show I bought on DVD I eventually ended up selling because I never found myself watching them. The Simpsons is the sole exception, because I plan on revisiting those until the discs begin to degrade.

I read somewhere that TV on DVD is huge in the flyover states. Does this ring a bell to anyone?

TV on DVD only makes sense for shows that tell a story. LOST makes sense, because you can sit down and watch the whole thing and get a story. Or shows that you LOVE - I have some SEINFELD on DVD because I can always watch that. But I agree with Scott big time on the shows that are just there to waste time at night.

If you haven't seen Dexter yet then get those sets if you want quality entertainment. Showtime shows are always reasonably priced even when they're first released.

9 out of 10 times it's best to just wait on any TV show box set. If you keep your eyes open you'll notice they can be had real cheap not long after release.

You're probably right on the "do I need to own it?" argument (if I wasn't a consumer whore). My wife and I do revisit shows (BUFFY, X-FILES, etc) from time to time during chores or while we work, or to listen to the commentaries. Plus, I don't like gumming up my Netflix queue with "our time" discs. And it's so much easier to toss in the next disc when you're really into the show, when it's onhand. But the release dates are still too slow.

I usually wait for good deals, when I A] haven't seen the show yet (yeah, sometimes I blind buy stuff based on recommendations or getting a taste) or B] when I've already watched the season and I just want the extras or to be completist.

EDIT: For example. I purchased LOST season 1 on dvd sight unseen and then caught seasons 2 & 3 on TV due to becoming a fast fan. Haven't purchased those seasons b/c I haven't seen great deals yet. I do possess the abilty to control my spending, but I don't like the goofy "premiere the new season before the last season has been released on dvd" schedule.

I'm not trying to bag on you, I'm really not. And, I haven't ever seen the show, so I admit I can't and shouldn't pass any kind of judgement.

But, I'm so wary to check out Dexter because it's one of those shows that's only been recommended to me by those people I know who just LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE shit like Boondock Saints.

Yeah, and he kinda looks like Huey Lewis on the Season 2 cover.

Well Dexter is a lot like BOONDOCK SAINTS, I can clearly see why it would have similar appeal. TV brothers from the same mothers, no doubt there! Todaloo!

Joey how can you say such horrible horrible things? God damn is Dexter good. Boondock Saints could never pull off the character work and plot twists that Dexter does.
