Der Baader Meinhof Komplex

Now potentially, this COULD be a compelling, controversial and important film, but on the other hand it COULD be absolute bollocks. The book by Stefan Aust (who used to be the editor-in-chief for 'Der Spiegel') is one of the greatest journalistic acheivements of our time and the cast is very promising... If you know diddly-squat about german cinema you should have heard of Moritz Bleibtreu. He played Eric Banas friend in Munich in, well Munich. But I'm not singling him out. Like I said, this has the potential to be big. It also gives oversea viewers the chance to brush up on their german history. The RAF isn't the Royal Air Force, just to get you started. Keep your eyes and ears peeled for it. I think (and hope) it'll be the next Lives of Others (aka the BAFTAS won't give a shit, but the Academy will go nuts for it).

To add to the controversy, Constantin Film put an embargo on it, allowing journalists to have a rant about the studio, but not about the film. American conditions in old 'n bold Europe. With all the hype, this could go horribly wrong, but my fingers are crossed.

I am very intrigued by that movie indeed. But I am quite worried at the same time since this is a bitch to tackle accurately from a historical point of view. Especially if you have to compete with the excellent TV docu-drama "Todesspiel" that tackles this issue superb. And given the fact that the book (though it has been in fact published quite some years ago i think it has been substantively updated recently) is so amazingly full of details that it can hardly be compressed into one movie to do it justice. And to compare it to "Das Leben der Anderen" might be aiming a bit to high but I would definitely not mind reaching that level.

And the trailer seems to sell it rather as an action movie than a characterization of that period and state of affairs of Germany, aka "Die bleierne Zeit."

But the cast is absolutely stellar. And you forgot about Bruno Ganz, famous for his perfect display of Hitler in "Downfall" playing the president of the BKA Herold (Interesting article about him at Spiegel online by the way).

So yeah, color me exited and intrigued. I was even close to write some lines to Devin for his new column but I fear it will fall short of any good style and substance.

BTW, welcome to the boards.

Dieser film sieht gut aus. Bruno Ganz and Moritz Bleibtreu in the same film is enough to get me in. Wish I was still over there so I could see/hear more about this first hand.

I'm aiming extremely high, but I still have faith in Eichinger. I know he's partially responsable for classics such as Fantastic 4 1 & 2, Resident Evil 1,2 & 3 and Das Parfüm (ok, so I hated the book too), but let's not forget the good times:

The Name of the Rose, Smilla's Sense of Snow, Der Untergang AND, last but not least, Christiane F. Directed by.... You guessed it: Uli Edel.

You can see where I'm coming from.
