BoA- Korean pop star makes U.S. Debut

BoA- the Korean superpop star.. in Asia, has been secretly honing her skills? to make her debut in the U.S. this year.

and her announcement yesterday, was that her debut single in the U.S. will be

"I'll eat you up"

it comes out in November, I think.

She has always been heard as the Korean Britney Spears (due to her vocals), but it sounds like she might get a chance to break into the American scene.

Why am I posting this? Well it's interesting to see if an asian artist can actually break thru in the U.S. Market. Utada Hikaru had the best chance in 2004 and her U.S release barely made a dent in sales in America. (She is also rumored to have another U.S. release coming out next year).

Anyway, I think BoA will just wind up being another test market for Korea, as they probably gear up for RAIN to start release English singles, so he can take over the world.

Isn't Rain the only SUPERTSTAR in Korean?

BoA is great (if you're into the K/J pop stuff), even though I think I've heard more of her output for Japan than Korea. I'll be following this one though! Thanks for the heads up neaux - you're the best source of asian music news around these parts!

My sister was really into DBSK last year. Through her I came to find out that there was once an Asian boyband called H.O.T. (High-five Of Teenagers) which is great.

I saw her perform at the Hollywood Bowl last year during the annual Korean music festival. She can work up a crowd like noone's business. I guess it helped that nearly everyone in the crowd (from tweeners to old fogies) knew that one song of hers.

Listen closely to the first line from this clip of the same song (it's the American video, I believe).

Is she not saying "When I first saw you I knew nothing's like it's used to be"?

Does this mean we're in for a wave of brutalized English in teen pop lyrics to go with our Genesis cutscenes? Excellent.

She's singing in her 3rd language, and writing her own lyrics these days; a little slack is in order. At least she's enunciating a lot better than most - I'll take the occasional slip over most the North American shit like

I done looked I done searched and it's hard to find another shorty like mine (thanks, Bow Wow)

That said, the song seems kind of flat and/or uninteresting, the clip section anyway. Between BoA, Utada and Koda Kumi they should just give up trying to break into the States, the work they've done overseas is far superior. I wonder why it is that they production value just seems so much lower in their NA output, or maybe I'm just secretely biased and protective.

Come on, half the point of enjoying j-rock and j-pop are the completely incoherent attempts at english. In related news, www.engrish.com is one of the greatest sites ever.*

Also, what Wolcott said.

Boa's an incredible dancer (just check out those slick, hip-hop moves in "Brand New Beat"), but I just don't see her breaking in the States. My money's on Se7en. So far I've heard nothing but positive buzz about his U.S. debut, and his new single ("Them Girls") is a huge improvement over that ill-advised collaboration with Fabolous. God, that song was awful.

for an american release... well its definately an AMERICAN release. Her English is pretty darn good on this album, but many songs are "T. Pained" with distortion and crazy electronic vocals.

The reality is this is an Electronic/pop album and I think it succeeds. The first 6 songs really are slickly produced and will get your foot tappin and booty dancing.

The Britney influence is easily heard, as B. Spears actually co-wrote one of the tracks Look Who's Talking.

Best track on the album is Did Ya where BoA sounds more like herself with a little Shakira mixed in for the most unique song on the record.

Very good effort. I'm hoping this gets some airplay, this CD knocks Utada's last american release out of the park.

speaking of which, Utada's new CD drops on itunes tomorrow.

BTW: Has anyone seen the Korean video for "Eat You Up?" The choreography is simply SICK.

I don't get it. What makes this her music differ from the likes of Britney, etc. again? Because it sounds pretty damn similar to me. No offense.
