Slipknot - All Hope Is Gone

Thread Starter
I read recently that this album debuted on Billboard as number 1 not to long ago. May still be there I do not know. But it's good to know some of the rap and country pop scuzzies got knocked around a little for old time's sake. I really like the album. Worth checking out to hear the gut wrenching sounds...Anyone else check it out?

This reeks of a shill thread, but I've been meaning to ask the local Chud Metalheads about Slipknot. I've always found them somewhat interesting, nice and heavy, great drummer, and a unique blend between Cookie Monster vocals (which I'm not a huge fan of) and some pretty cool melodies. I've only really listened to the singles though. Are they worth getting more into?

I'm a fan of them. Dug the hell outta their first 3 albums. The new one is still growing on me slowly.

Weird enough, I imagine it's better if you work your way backwards. The total barrage of that first album is probably best eased into from your standpoint, and Subliminal Verses is a good place to start.

I haven't heard it all the way through yet, but after Dead Memories, the new one seems to be unraveling in the worst way.

Thanks Justin, I was hoping I'd hear from you. You're my "Chewer I trust with Metal Tastes" go-to.

Rob and Justin really summed them up nicely.

All Hope is Gone feels like them trying to "do" Slipknot instead of it coming naturally, like a bad cover band. The light stuff just doesnt work like it did in Subliminal Verses (as in, its shit), and the heavy stuff feels like its just there because they couldnt get away with releasing an entire album of light, experimental rock under the moniker. And I actually LIKE the three heavy songs on the album (Gematria, This Cold Black, All Hope is Gone).. but it just feels hollow for the most part. That said, I more or less hated the album on first playthrough, but the aforementioned 3 tracks have grown on me, and I don't mind Sulfur, Psychosocial, or Dead Memories (!!) anymore. The rest of the album can pretty much go fuck itself though.

I've been listening to them since the self-titled album, and even though they have a pretty bad rap around these parts I'd say are worth looking into further.

That self-titled album contains the single most vicious, extended use of the word "Motherfucker" I've heard in music, movies, books, media, PERIOD.

I do enjoy how there is no vulgarity on Subliminal Versus. And the self-titled still gets the most play in my car.

I gave up after Iowa. That record sounded like they were trying too hard to out-extreme themselves, whereas staying the course would have been sufficient. Most songs on Iowa sounded like a washing machine full of blind kids being kicked down a flight of stairs.

I haven't heard SFA since that follow up. Is there later stuff ANY good?

Slipknot's never particularly held my interest. Slipknot and Iowa are certainly heavy as hell but I lost interest for the most part once the shock value wore off. I don't have much memory of Volume 3, I'm about to give it a re-listen. I've always enjoyed the drumming and I think Corey's a fantastic vocalist especially when he sings instead of howls, which is why I'm more of a Stone Sour fan.

I liked the new album much more than I expected. The heavy stuff certainly isn't up to Iowa levels anymore but I liked it enough and the slower stuff really brought out what I like from Corey.

That's my opinion as a non-fan.

Yep, thats what it sounds like to me. I consider myself a moderate Knot fan. I think Iowa is sounds pretty dated, but I enjoyed the Subliminal Verses.

This album just isn't that good, I know a few band members talked about how the song writing process was rushed, and I think it shows. I feel like everything on this disc is just a rehash of shit they used to do better.
The only track I really dig is Gematria.

Just curious, what song is that exactly?

Eyeless. 3:25.

I guess it kinda is. I've more a vicious use of that in real life though.

After listening to the whole thing in one swoop the other day, that's about what I'd say about it. It's not bad, just not great. At least I have 3 other great albums by them.

I still like IOWA dammit....
