New Netflix Problems

Every movie on my queue has a Very Long Wait as of this last hour or so. Thankfully both my discs are here with me and I'm not waiting on any to be shipped but I don't know what this will mean for those of you who are.

Anybody heard anything? Last time was kind of irritating, I'd hate to see it happen again so soon.
I'll be damned. I've never seen that before.

Mine, too.

Check yours, mine's back to normal again.

At least for the moment.

Same here.

I just want to say that they've been doing this thing where they ship movies from random locales a lot lately, and it's pissing me off.
I wonder if that's why my movies have been coming to me on different days.
They should send you an e-mail if they have to ship from a different center. I finally had to report "Best Seller" missing because they shipped it from fucking Georgia.

Frankenhooker = Very Long Wait... Goddamnit.

Rather than start a new thread I figured I'd ask this here:

Has Netflix always had time limits on their Instant Watch movies? I just saw on my queue today that I have until September 30th to watch Planet of the Apes and Race with the Devil and until October 1st for Battleship Potemkin and The General. First time I noticed that.

'Tis a common problem on that title.

They've only notified me once. They had to change it from the local center to one in Greensboro and that was only because the local center was out of it. Every other time they straddle me with other cities.

I thought they lost a lawsuit over the viewer ratio straddle.

The "throttling"? I thought so too. They bumped me up to the next tier for the past month due to some class action settlement.

An issue I have noticed recently. My queue (which I admit is lengthy) takes FOREVER to load. Wasn't nearly as slow before.
I've still got the DVD "For Y'ur Height Only".

Sorry.

I returned that a long time ago. This isn't my fault.

So I've been more active with my account over the past two weeks and all of a sudden I'm getting two day delivery times instead of one.

I thought throttling was a thing of the past?
Many of the streaming flicks are limited, but they usually have a warning.

This sucks, because I was counting on them having the theatrical Grindhouse forever. Grrrrr.
Hmmm. Maybe it's because I'm close to their home base, but not only do I continue to get pretty much instant turnaround (and we use it a LOT), but last week, when they had to ship my next title from Bumfuck USA or somewhere, they let me keep it as an extra title till I returned it.

It is supposed to be. Also, don't forget to factor in the general shit that goes along with the USPS.

I would have thought that it was the USPS but the times on the site went to two day waits instead of them just showing up two days later.

They have been shipping me extra DVDs off and on for a couple of months now. We'll have all 6 films from our plan at the house and still get another one in the mail sometimes. I just figure they are trying to get me to think "you know 6 discs is great, but having 7 is even better!".
Nothing beats looking at your queue on Tuesday and seeing the top 13 movies in it are either "very long/long/short wait" and getting a movie 25 DVD's down at the bottom of my queue. They need to fix this shit, it's getting out of hand.

No, that means they are losing the rights to instant-play those, so they won't be available after that date. Some of them are "Starz instant play" meaning they get them as long as Starz is broadcasting them but then when Starz stops, so does netflix.

There is only a limit on your instant watching if you are on the $5/mo plan.

I live about 30 minutes or so drive to a distribution center, but it still takes 2-3 days turnaround for another disk.

Tack 28 days on to your VERY LONG WAIT new release WB discs.

Every time I want to join up with Netflix I read about some problems, and that keeps me from joining it. Instant streaming is about the only thing that's still tugging at me.

The wait will be 28 days total, all new Warner Bros releases will be on Instant Watch after the delay. It's much more valuable to me if they guarantee all new Warner Bros releases will be on instant watch quickly. Physical DVDs are a tiny fraction of my Netflix activity and usually involve older films.
Here's the top of my rental queue.

Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs ... short wait
9 .................................................. .. long wait
Paranormal Activity ......................... very long wait
Jennifer's Body ............................... very long wait
Public Enemies ................................ long wait

Granted all of those are in Blu-Ray

They go straight to Instant the moment the 28 days is up? Oh I'm even more excited about that. That's fantastic.

I heard about that concession. But, I don't trust Netflix to do it 100% right. What quality of Instant View feed are we going to get? How much of that is available in HD? What titles? If it's just 20-30 titles per month promised to Instant View after a month delay, they better step their fucking game up.

Plus, the whole updating of the Instant View slots are so fucking scattershot that you're never sure when shit is actually getting updated. For that matter, what the fuck is it going to take to get some more television and animated programming on Instant View. Shit, none of the FOX Animation is available on it. Futurama, King of the Hill, Simpsons, etc...all would be easy. Just cut a fucking check already.

Man, Netflix has been pissing me off.

This I agree with. That feature is sorely in need of a coding update.

Yes. Really.

You have a subscriber based service that you're handicapping with studio concessions. Paying customers are being put out by this and what are they getting in return? The promise of a feature that should be there. Nothing extra. Nothing to make the entire concept a little more tolerable.

Especially, since it's all done out of fear of Redbox. A poorly thought-out Coinstar offshoot that is aching for a legal battle.

I just hope these wb instant views don't look like that starz shit.

MAYbe...I mean to each their own, but I watched IKIRU last night. A couple of nights before that I watched RASHOMON. I have practically half of Kurosawa's oeuvre at my fingertips. Same with Fellini. And Bergman. And Hitchcock. For the longest time I had the complete theatrical cut of GRINDHOUSE available at the push of a button. Does the service need a little bit of work? Sure. But I'm damn sure not gonna sneeze at a treasure-trove like that just because they don't have Futurama or need to update their website a little bit. Though, I've NEVER used my Netflix account (even pre-Instant) as a means to watch New Release or incredibly mainstream stuff anyway, so we're already coming from two different places.

That is exactly what I'm worried about.

Netflix's instant view has REALLY stepped their game up in the past year so I have every confidence that this is a good thing.

Most releases are made available on DVD/BD within 4 months of their theatrical release; what's 28 more days for a movie that I didn't bother seeing in the theater and I will be able to stream without a disc? If its a movie that I HAVE to see, I'll just buy the damn disc.

I mean, there is only so much to expect from a service that costs $9 a month.

That's one way of looking at it. The other way is to see a service that makes small steps forward and then takes giant leaps back. The Instant View quality is hit and miss. The selection is unstable with a lot of Instant View titles leaving Instant View within a few weeks of appearing on there.

Plus, it's the fact that they're taking such shit from the studios when they could go after Redbox. It's just bullshit how they expect their customer base to underwrite this crap.

The percentage of consumers buying in at the $9 level is a drop in the bucket.

What's all this quality stuff about? Granted, I have one of those big, 4:3, CRT HDTVs that seemingly got made in that transitional period before companies really knew what the hell to do with HD - so I have a 4:3 that displays centercut 1080i if that's what I choose to feed to it - but the ONLY time I have quality issues on Instant is if MY connection gets wonky or bottlenecked by internet stuff on the laptop.

And maybe Netflix kinda sees how explosive Redbox is for the new release stuff, so it makes sense that they might be making moves towards making the Instant their bread and butter. The addition of ALL of those Criterion movies recently seems to suggest it.

I, as well as several friends/family members, have dropped to that level since they started the Instant View feature.

Like many of the posters before stated, I use Netflix for movies that can't be found at the local rental stores as well as documentaries; a large number of these titles pop up on Instant View. A lot of my friends who have children use the service to watch all of those Nickelodeon and Disney shows; the kids couldn't give a shit if its in HD.

Like everyone has said, its not perfect but it is still a pretty awesome feature.
Agreed. It's not perfect, but it helps to make Netflix more appealing.

In regards to Butler's statement, the video quality is an issue. The Starz titles are the ones that get trolled out by most people. But, grab any of the television series older than 1999. It's beyond the source material, it's poor streaming.

ALFRED HITCHCOCK PRESENTS, SNL S1, THE TWILIGHT ZONE S1...just the few that I can think of off the top of my head that I know I've watched (HITCHCOCK and SNL as recently as this past weekend) - and they all looked fine. I'll concede that it may be the difference between a CRT and an LCD (since basic cable still looks crystal clear as well, and it looks like ass on my giant, wall-mounted, 1080p monitor at the office), but still, they're as pristine as they can be.
Those are out of HD, just in SD...correct?
Actually, the SNL early seasons are a weird entity. The soft look they had, plus the encodes for the Universal transfers don't really make the case for poor streaming.

I'm glad that we're all talking about this. It's giving me an idea for a future add-on.
I'm old. What Netflix is currently offering via Instant would be beyond the 20 year old me's wildest fucking dreams. I'm not gonna get entitled for a good long while yet.

And yeah, SNL was shot on 1 inch videotape, so it's never going to need to be HD. Content is king there.
The SNL situation is understood, that's what I was saying.

Still, leave it to Phil. Always puts it in perspective.
