I'm gonna have an amazing race tomorrow!!!

A friend and I signed up for City Chase, an "urban adventure" that's part Amazing Race, part Fear Factor. I just picked up my race kit, which includes the secret start location and a clue to the first challenge. This is going to be so fucking fun.

The main website doesn't give many hints to the types of challenges there will be. But a quick Google search came up with the following (the Sydney one being the most comprehensive):

Sydney
http://www.balgara.com/citychasesydney/

Toronto
http://www.thinkattack.com/index.php?id=852

Seattle
http://www.staticzombie.com/2008/08/...e_seattle.html

Calgary
http://ratsamydeaune.blogspot.com/20...algary-08.html

Hong Kong
http://shallotsbigyearsout.blogspot....k-n-diane.html

Anyone else participate in anything like this?

Thanks for the well-wishes Eileen and Brendan!

My partner and I came in 181 out of 500+ teams in 5hrs and 30 mins. We started off at a record pace, completing 5 out of 10 challenges by 12:30 p.m. (the race started at 10 a.m.). The challenges themselves were cake (we aced them all in no time), but we ran into some long wait times at two challenges (one was mandatory so we couldn't leave) and made a few crucial errors getting to two challenges that cost us some time in the later half of the race.

All in all a total blast though. We plan on doing it again next year. The biggest thing I learned is that you have to decide before the race whether you are competing for the race or just there to have fun. There were really only 3-4 really fun challenges (mechanical bull riding, rock wall climbing, live band karaoke at Arlene's Grocery) and they were spread out all over the city. The rest were scavenger hunt type things or qiuzzes/memorization.

The other thing I learned is that if you are there for the race aspect, you can get two ChasePoints out of the way before the race even starts. City Chase partners with Dove and if you raise $40 in pledges and show the receipt at the start, you get 1 point off the bat (we opted not to because we wanted to experience the fun of the challenges). Additionally, they send you an e-mail two days before the event announcing the starting point location. The e-mail also gives a clue to the first challenge, which said to pick up a Metro (local newspaper). Within it, we found an ad that had a scavenger hunt list. We came to the race prepared with 7 out of the 9 items and thought we could easily find the other two the day of the race. Those last two took us about 20 minutes to locate. The top 7 teams all finished in just over 3 hours and all started with the 2 points in the bag. Had we started with those two, our pace was on par to be in the mix with the leaders.

I'll list all the clues later, but here's a synopsis of what we did:

Chase Point 1: Scavenger hunt (Location, Webster Hall, East Village)

- 2 coins with the years of each participants birthdays
- a tan line
- a tattoo/piercing not located on the head/face
- the owner of Webster Hall (the starting location)
- Today's (Saturday, Sept. 13) temperature in the 2008 City Chase World Championship location
- a live animal (not a person)
- a person who is the same height of one of the team members
- both teammates with their shirts and bottoms on backwards
- the names of the Crunch warm-up crew

Chase Point 2: Scavenger hunt (Location: South Street Seaport)

We were given a Palm Centro and had to video tape the following:

- A stranger drinking a Coke (bottle or can) with a boat in the background
- One team member tickling the barefoot of a stranger
- Three non-participants singing a "water-themed" song with one of the New York City Waterfalls on the East River in the background
- One Chaser and 2 non-participants spelling PALM with their bodies - cheerleader style ("Give me a P, give me an A, etc..."

Chase point 3: Scavenger hunt (Location: Battery Park)
Note: We were trying to find another challenge but couldn't so settled for this one.

We were given a Palm Centro and had to video tape the following:

- A group of 1 team member and 3 non-chasers singing the national anthem in front of a/the Statue of Liberty (we stood in front of a street performer dressed as lady Liberty)
- A non-participant leapfrogging (minimum of 5 jumps) with a team member
- A non-participant piggy backing one member of the team for one lap around "the Bull"

Chase Point 4: Scavenger hunt (Location: NYC Fire Museum, SOHO)

We were given a list of questions to answer regarding the history fire fighters in NYC. This was by far the most boring challenge. My partner and I split up and when we reconnected, he had found answers for the questions I didn't have so it was relatively painless.

Chase point 5: Ping-Pong (location: Fat Cat Billiards, West Village)

We had to compete against another team. First to 5 points wins. The catch: One partner had to stand with their hands on their hips and the other had to play standing behind their partner by sticking their arms through their partners'. We killed this challenge (5-0) in a matter of minutes!

Chase Point 6: Cheerleading (Location: Christopher St Piers, West Village)

Our team had to partner up with another and create a cheer that must include:

- A jump, a kick, and a lift
- The words: City Chase, New York City, Big Apple, and on team's name
- At least one person had to wear a cheerleading outfit
- Another person had to have a pon pom

Cheers were judged for creativity (we witnessed another team fail because of this)

Chase Point 7: Kayaking (Location: Pier 40, West Village)

We had to do a lap around the course.

Chase Point 8: Dice Roll (Location: Pier 40, West Village)

Each team member had to roll a dice and eat whatever corresponded to that number.

1 - Pass
2 - Lemon Wedge
3 - Anchovy
4 - Live cricket
5 - Live meal worm
6 - Wasabi

After witnessing someone puke in front of me, I prayed hard for a pass and rolled a 1. My partner had to eat an anchovy. We got off lucky.

Chase Point 9: Beat boxing (Side A Cafe, Lower East Side)

We had to partner with another team on stage. We were each given a specific noise to make and the host would point at us when it was our turn to join in.

Chase Point 10: Memorization (St. Marks Place, East Village)

We had to find a specialty hot dog store and were given 30 seconds to memorize roughly 12 dogs and their ingredients. We were then asked to name the ingredients of one dog chosen at random. There was only one dog that had one topping and we lucked out by being asked that one. The topping - cream cheese! Ugh!

The race ended at 4 p.m. regardless if you completed 10 challenges. About half the teams never finished, so I'm pretty happy that we did. There was also an after party at Webster Hall with free food and booze. Good times.

My friend Greg and I competed again. The winners crossed the finish line in 3 hours and 26 minutes. The second place team arrived a full hour after them! We came in 107th place out of nearly 400 teams, of which only 93 teams completed all 10 Chase Points (as opposed to last year where almost half finished). We were on par to beat our record from last year, but lost an hour due to the unfortunate problem of two schools being named after the same person.

The day before the Chase, we received an email with the secret location of the start point (Public School 34 on 12th St. between Avenue D and Szold Pl.). The e-mail also gave us two opportunities to get Chase Points before the race even started. The first was to raise funds for the LUNGevity Foundation. To receive the point, we needed to raise $40 before 3 p.m. the day of the race. I figured it was worth a shot, set up an account, and within a few hours we were over the $100 mark.

The second was a clue to information that would be needed for a Chase Point, which read:

"Want to get ahead of the game? Visit www.newyork.metromix.com to find out which team won the "World's Largest Flip Cup Tournament" last year at M1-5 bar and what color their team's shirts were. Bring these two answers with you on Chase day as they will be a necessary password for one of the Chase Points!"

A quick Google search told us Two Finger Fanatics, wearing baby blue shirts, were the reigning flip cup champs. (We ended up not using this info, as we didn't go to the challenge that needed it.)

Saturday morning we arrived with a game plan already mapped out. Since I had an iphone this year, we decided when we got the clue sheet we'd spend the time to map out all their locations so we wouldn't be running all over the city. But before we could get our clue sheet, the City Chase organizers put us on a scavenger hunt to disperse the crowd.

Scavenger hunt (Location: Alphabet City)

We had to find 8 out of the following 10 items. Because we participated last year, we knew that you had to physically bring these items back to the starting point. Many people took photos and were turned away until they completed the challenge correctly.
  • The flight # of the first non-stop flight on Southwest Airlines (a City Chase sponsor) leaving Chicago to NYC
  • U.S. currency with you team # on it
  • Something used in sex
  • Current temperature in Quebec City, site of the City Chase national finals
  • A 2 inch stain
  • Something in a foreign language
  • A live animal
  • A tattoo
  • Something expired
  • A heart drawn around one team member's belly button in red lipstick

We run to the first drugstore and saw a mass of people buying out the lipstick and condoms. So we go to the nearest bodega and buy a Spanish language newspaper. Greg came up with the idea to use the free iced tea City Chase was handing out to create a stain on the paper. I used my iphone to look up the Southwest Flight (2288 leaving at 11:20 a.m.) and temperature in Quebec City (61 degrees). Greg had the tattoo. But we could not for the life of us find the rest of the stuff. We decided to head back to the starting point, thinking we'd figure the rest out along the way. On the way back, we passed a street vender. We didn't see any red lipstick, but I guess others had been there and the woman said, "I have! I have!" We paid $5 for lipstick, I drew a heart on my belly and we were back on our way. We jump in line to get our clue sheet, see people use a pen to write their team # on a dollar bill, so we do the same. As we get closer to the table, Greg said, "Tongues are used in sex." We both stuck out our tongues and voila we got our clue sheet.

While others dashed off into the oblivion, we sat in a shady spot and looked over the clue sheet. There were several sections: One required that you do at least one of the challenges listed, another said that you may only do one, and the last section had about 15 challenges to choose among. Our day went as follows...

Chase Point 1: CLIF hanger (Location: W. 43 St.)

Clue: Make it to the top and your Partner will too. Near Hell's Kitchen is a location Clue.

We immediately knew it was rock climbing and that it was at the Manhattan Plaza Health Club. I climbed up the wall first and placed a CLIF bar in a bag located at the top. Greg then had to climb up and grab the CLIF bar out. Easy peazy. One Chase point done.

Chase Point 2: Rolling for clothing (Location: Leisure Time Bowls, Port Authority.)

Clue: This point is judged by how much you wear. We'll see if you get lucky throwing a strike or if you get bare. There are bus lanes there but these other lanes too. A Leisure sport is what you must do.

The goal: One person bowls, the other person strips for each non-strike or spare. Shoes and socks don't count. Greg rolls. My shirt comes off. Greg rolls again. Shorts come off. Pins reset. Come on, Greg, you can do this! Greg rolls. Sports bra comes off. Ack! Greg rolls. Do I really have to get naked? Yes. My mom would be so proud.

Error #1. We read the clue sheet and realize, in order to get credit for the LUNGevity fund raising, we had to bring a printout to a specific location. Fuck! We jump on a train to Greg's apt. (luckily one stop away) and waste 20 minutes. No worries, we think, we are back on track.

Error #2.

Clue: Robert Louis Stevenson wrote novels, long and short. I'm not sure what he would pen about this kind of sport. His work was famous and a new revolution and now he tiltles an educational institution.

We Google "Stevenson Robert Louis school NYC" and a dozen listings pop up reporting its location on W. 74 St. We hop on the train at 34th street and get to the school. Angry Chasers scream at us that there was nothing there. I scan my phone and at the very bottom of the page, I see a link for Public School 183, also named after Stevenson, located on E. 66th St.

Decisions. We've already wasted so much time. Do we go crosstown or head to lower Manhattan where all the other challenges are? I suggest heading to 72 St. If we see a bus, we take it. Otherwise we'll go back to the train. As we turn the corner, a bus stops at the light a block away. I tell Greg to kick it into gear and we literally chase down the bus, barely making it as the driver started to shut the doors.

While on the bus we see that there is a Chase Point near the Stevenson school right on the other side of Central Park. We hop off.

Chase Point 3: Plunge (Location: Julia Richman High School, E. 67)

Clue: There was once a Julia Richman and now her name is on five. Close your eyes and get ready at the one where you can dive.

The goal: Dive into a pool in the shallow end and find the hockey pucks with your number on them at the bottom of the deep end. I roll a pair a dice and get a 1 and 5. Our numbers are 15 and 51. We scout the pool, find where they are located, and I jump in. Crap! I forgot to take out my contacts and now they are gone. I am blind. I attempt one more time and realize this is futile since I literally can't see. Greg attempts the challenge several times and we begin to think this may have been a mistake. Finally he gets one, but at this point he is completely out of breath. The second puck is sitting on a lane line painted on the pool floor. I go again, follow the line to where I think the puck should be, grab the nearest one and YES! we get to move on. Soaking wet, we make our way to the correct Stevenson school.

Chase Point 4: Just one wheel (Location: Stevenson School, E. 66 St.)

This is the first time we had to wait in line. There were only three teams ahead of us though. Greg and I had to ride modified unicycles located on opposite sides of a basketball court, meet in the middle, high 5 each other, and then bike to the other basket. Once there, we each had 5 attempts to make it in the basket. If either person fails, you go to the end of the line in order to start again. Remember, I cannot see even a foot in front of me. But no worries. We each make our baskets quickly.

Now its decision time again. It's 1 p.m. and we need 6 more Chase Points. All the Points we mapped out were on the lower west side. We could do the lower east side challenges instead, but in order to get credit for the fund raising, we had to go to a school back on the west side. Bah! We hop back on the crosstown bus.

On the bus, we hear a commotion. There's a woman wearing a giant airplane costume. There are several of these people spread out all over the city. If you see one, you can ask for a special pass that will let you hop the line at any Chase point. I run up and say the magic words, "May I have an A-Class Boarding Pass?" Score!

Chase Point 5 & 6: LUNGevity/William Tell (Location: P.S. 191, W. 61 St.)

Clue: It was once New York's early name. There's a Holland City known for vice called the same. The school where you're going is a drug free Zone. We hope your aim is good and your skills are honed.

We hand the woman our LUNGevity sheet and get Chase Point 5. For Chase Point 6, we had to do archery. You completed the challenge if one person hit the bullseye or if both members combined get 40 points. We get stuck behind at least 7 teams. Only two teams can compete at a time and we were told some people took a long time to complete. It's now 2 p.m. Should we wait? We figure we're here. Let's do it. After what feels like forever, we get up. Greg and I start putting on all the gear. As I'm buckling up my armband, I hear, "Congrats! You're done." Greg hit the bullseye on his second shot. Hooray! We look at the clock. 2:30. Fuck!

Chase Point 7: Turning Tricks (Location: Crunch Fitness, John St.)

Clue: If you were Crunch'ed for funds and had to come up with a new career. This exercise would come in handy and your shoes would be clear. Most are private and act discreet and you'll find out it is on John's St.

Goal: To perform a sexy pole dancing routine. A Crunch fitness instructor would teach the routine twice. The third time you performed. You weren't judged (well, not for the challenge anyway) in order to get credit. Once again, we hit a long ass line. Only two teams can go at a time and there were 8 teams ahead of us. We stay and though there is no video of Greg or I, you can watch the sexy instructor strut her stuff here.

Chase Point 8: Dixieland (Location: Mason Dixon, Lower East Side)

At this point it is 3 p.m. We had planned to go boxing at the Church St, boxing gym, but we knew we only had time to do one more challenge. Let's make it a fun one.

Clue: In Pamplona they run with them and today's challenge awaits. You'll hold on tight at the line separating the Northern and Southern United States.

We head over to the bar with a mechanical bull. The challenge was to stay on the bull for 25 seconds between the two of us. There was a long line of people, but we whip out our A-Class Boarding Pass and go straight to the front. Whee! I go first and hang on a respectable 16 seconds. Greg does the remaining 9 seconds no problem.

It's now 10 to 4. The race is over. We head to the finish line for a cold brewski. But first, find Diva contact lenses! I managed to complete the race completely blind, but Greg and I had a softball game at 6 p.m. and I would most definitely need to see the ball. As I lament the situation, we cross the street and see a Cohen's Fashion Optical. I have their store call over to mine to confirm my prescription and then beg them to let me have a pair of contacts for free. The manager consents. Score!

All-in-all a fun day! I f you ever have the chance to compete in one of these games, I wholeheartedly recommend it.
