The Gaslight Anthem

I'm really digging these guys and their latest, "The '59 Sound." They're a "Jersey sound" throwback band with Springsteen lyrics and bar band arrangements. (Although there's some Replacements and Bouncing Souls in there, too.) They wear their influences on their sleeve, namechecking Petty and the Boss throughout the album, and there are a couple of songs where they approach parody, but songs like 'Great Expectations', 'High Lonesome,' and 'The '59 Sound' more than make up for it.

It's wistful fist-pumping blue collar small town rock that's more of an awareness and acknowledgement of the towns they come from than a celebration pf its depression and values. That might not be your kind of thing, but I have a soft spot for this kind of music, so there you go.

In short, not as good as the Hold Steady but better than the last Killers album and Jesse Malin's solo stuff in the "borrowing heavily from early to mid0 Springsteen" sweepstakes.

My room-mate and I had just finished up packing the rest of our place. We piled into the car, the radio was playing and 'The 59 Sound' was playing. We were living in Jersey, and I swear it was the most perfect moving music. Got the album soon after and digging it. Nothing is as strong as the title track, but 'High Lonesome' and 'Film Noir' are definite favorites.

Strong album, and my room-mate commented that it sounded a lot like Springsteen. Go figure, they're from Jersey!

They do get points taken off for 'High Lonesome', though. One lyric, 'Maria came from Nashville with a suitcase in her hand' is taken directly from 'Round Here' by Counting Crows. Still a great fucking song, just one thing that rubbed me raw.

And you're right...it reminds me almost as if 'Boys of Summer' had been stretched out into an album. There's an autumn to it that takes you down to reality, and it's really awesome because of it.

I'm so behind on this, but this album rules.

I got The '59 Sound in November, I freaking love that record.

I'm not as enthralled with it as I was, especially since their other stuff wasn't that impressive to me, but I'll still play it occasionally when I need to get pumped up.

This hasn't held up for me as much as I had hoped, but it's still very good. To me, it sounds a lot like what The Killers' last album WANTED to sound like (sans all the synths).

These guys have a great cover of "God's Gonna Cut You Down," though.

Not a fan of their album, but live these guys are fantastic. Probably the most clean cut band I've ever seen and their sheer joy in their music was kind of enthralling. Definitely a group to see live because their energy really is quite infectious.

Love 59 Sound. Sink or Swim is also good but sounds a little bit samey to me.

It's a conscious riff on the original lyric. In the Crows song, Maria meets a guy who looks like Elvis. In the Gaslight song, the narrator of the song "always kinda sorta wished I looked like Elvis." Near the end, he sings, "And at night I wake up with the sheets soaking wet/It's a pretty good song/Maybe you know the rest," the first part of which is "ripping off" Springsteen's "I'm On Fire."

It's not like they're passing it off as their own work.

For me the best track on 59 Sound is "Here's Looking At You Kid." Nobody ever mentions it even though its a gorgeous sound.

Personally i think I bit more melodic than Hold Steady.

I never quite looked at it that way, bendrix. I just remember loving the original and was quite annoyed by it. It doesn't bother me anymore, in fact, I embrace it wholly.

This still gets heavy rotation. Heck, when I'm walking along the highway on the way home from the bus station and the sun is just hanging on the horizon and the first stars are creeping out, there's no better music. I've fallen in and out back into love with all of the songs. 'Meet Me By the River's Edge' I think is my current favorite, but nothing beats the absolutely bombastic-ness of 'The Backseat' (in fact, so much that one of the lyrics is in my sig). I rarely dig entire albums, but I could listen to all of this and never once feel let down.

Maybe it's just cuz I live in Jersey or something, but it works. My god, it works.

New single off the new album, "American Slang." Seems like they're borrowing a lot from U2 this time around.

Man that's a pretty big disappointment of a debut single.

I liked it. It wasn't what I was expecting, but I think the band can be very hit and miss, with " '59 Sound" being their only very good to great album so far. So I'm optimistic.

Nah, I like their first album quite a bit. The song about The Clash/Joe Strummer is amazing.

I'm a big Lucero/Against Me! fan so I was super harsh on this album when I first got it, but I have to say it won me over after awhile. I downloaded some of their older stuff and that shit won me over too. I can't remember the name of it, but I can definitely recommend that EP they released just before 59 Sound.
