Saturday Night Live-Season 34 - Page 3

I am suprised Anne Hathway hasn't ever recorded an album. She has pretty good voice.
That was an awesome Mark Wahlberg impression by Sandberg
post #103 of 573
Wow, that Wahlberg voice was spot on. It sounded exactly like that scene from Three Kings where he's in shock.
Shit, missed the Wahlberg sketch. Got distracted by "N.W.A.: The World's Most Dangerous Group" on VH-1.

Wahlberg skit had me in tears.

Anne Hathaway is hot, but she could eat a cheeseburger or two.
Good episode. Hathaway is surprisingly funny. Fey could do Palin in her sleep. Wiig totally sold the digital short. And Samberg's Marky Mark was fucking hysterical.

Well done, people.
Best episode of the year so far.

I forgot about the digital short. That was awesome.
I don't know if it's sad, that with Palin there is no difference between the actual thing and a parody.

Ditto on the Mark Wahlberg talks to animals.
Hathaway was great. It was amazing how easy she made doing the show look. If she was reading from cards I didn't notice (the featured girl can't take her eyes off of them).

Tina Fey... I mean, she is so freaking good. I almost want her back on the show, but then again, I'd rather have more 30 Rock.

i don't know what you guys see in Samberg. His digital shorts get worse each time and although he does great voice impersonations, the skits he attaches to them can barely be called skits.

Highlight for me (aside from the political sketches) was Amy Poehler and Seth Meyer tag-teaming the World's Fattest Man jokes. I've been posting about that guy on CHUD for years. Seth's joke definitely topped Amy's. I'm assuming it was improvised because Amy handed him a $20.
I don't know Samberg is pretty much off and on. Sone of his stuff I find prett funny, and some of it is just retarded.

I loved Hathaway too, and it was a nice surprise. Her singing voice was lovely, she delivered a solid monologue, her Julie Andrews impersonation was flawless, and she seemed to love playing really plastic or slutty people. All fine by me.
Here's to actresses with stage training. And killer smiles.

New Guy earned some points this week with the silly dance sketch, and as the little English boy.

"O.J. Simpson was found guilty on charges of armed robbery, assault, and kidnapping. But really murder."
I love Samberg. Pretty decent episode.
I want to spend a weekend in bed with Anne Hathaway. A long weekend, like Presidents day weekend. And I want it to start right after work on Friday.

And when did The Killers become The Eels?
Sheeeee likes ANAL!
Samberg talking to the chicken was the hardest I've laughed during SNL in a long time. He nailed it.
Definitely the least sucky episode of the season so far. I actually only fast-forwarded one sketch (Katy Perry)!

Hathaway killed as Mary Poppins. And, yeah, she does have a nice voice. I almost feel like she's already got the lead for the "Wicked" movie in the bag.

"Mark Wahlberg Talks To The Animals" was gold.
I forgot to record this last night and I'm kicking myself.

I like the goat chat better.

"Hey goat, you got a beard like I had in The Perfect Storm, you see that movie huh? You see that movie?"

Agreed.

I've virtually certain I'm in the minority on this one but I wish there had been another skit with the "Oh my GAWD, do you smell all that peppa?" guy. I don't know why but he kills me.

The actor or the character?

True, but I think Forte was just as good as the ref in that short.
Good Burger was kept mostly under wraps, and the new girl wasn't bad at all. It did feel like SNL. Loved the digital short.
Maybe I'm just getting older, but Samberg is awful. The digital shorts have been shit all season and the Wahlberg impression was pointless.
Samberg is pretty awful. He does have his moments, though.

The character. I think the actor is a nonentity at this point, although he was in a shitload of bits last night.

I also have a bizarre weak spot for the Target lady.
New girl's rack looked really nice in the Katy Perry sketch. Good episode all around.
A better episode than they've been lately.

Digital Short got a few chuckles from me. But that Mark Wahlberg skit-- pointless as it may have been-- had me nearly in tears. Perfect.

SNL has caused a small ruckus as of late. I have two best friends, and we generally share a lot of the same tastes. We had a disagreement a few weeks back-- I said that I think Kristen Wiig is very attractive and consistently one of the better performers. One buddy completely disagreed and said she was "annoying and not even close to hot", while the other was a little more on the fence said she was "ok looking, but kinda funny".

Am I that wrong?
Queen Latifah was awesome during the debate open. Her reactions totally sold it. Also the line "I believe marrage is a sacred union between two unwilling teenager" had me in tears.

The Wahlberg sketch was so odd it was awesome.

And I'm sorry but update has been unexpectadly one of the weakest links all season. The bit with Forte was aweful.

I think she's overused and has some of the most consistently annoying characters since Cheri Oteri. She shines in small parts (like her bit in Knocked Up).

I think Wiig is attractive and pretty funny. But I also mostly just see her in movies here and there (Knocked Up and Forgetting Sarah Marshall). I don't really watch SNL. I've just been watching it lately in order to see Fey as Palin.
What I'm wondering is... has the show ever been this bad before? In my entire life I cannot remember SNL being this horrible. Fey isn't exactly killing as Palin due to the fish-in-a-barrel effect, but take her away from this season and what the christ are you left with?

I like Wiig generally and think she is immensely talented, but you are spot on in that the characters she is drawn to - or at the very least - that make it to air are unbearable:

-- annoying Target lady
-- annoying woman who one-ups everything you say
-- annoying daughter with braces who picks on her brother (I said we!)
-- annoying newscasters who hits on her interviewees
-- annoying travel reporter (just kidding)
-- annoying aunt who gives terrible movie reviews (Gah!)

I'm sure there's more. The fact that I remember these is frightening. I think it speaks more to the fact they are repeated ad nauseum each season rather them standing out in any way besides being awful.

It's a shame because when Wiig isn't the main character, she shines.
Also have to point out...the Lawrence Welk sketch was good stuff too.

Only carachters Wiig does that I don't like are the Target lady and the old woman that does movie reviews. On some strange level I really like the Daughter with Braces carachter.
Well, most of those characters are annoying because they're also recurring characters (Two A-Holes is the exception to the rule). I don't know if there's still pressure on players to develop catchphrases but it's always been a weakness for the show.

Wiig's best suit may be her unconventional celebrity impersonations. Her Drew Barrymore and Bjork are both uncanny. And she's nowhere near as obnoxious as Oteri was.

You're left with whatever it was you liked about the show when you were twelve. This isn't the worst it's been-- that would be the Tony Rosato years.

I gotta disagree on the first part. The point of most of those characters is that they annoy other people. Hence the customers at Target getting fed up. Or the guests at the parents house leaving after having to endure the kids obnoxious show and tells. Or of course, the obnoxious habit of one-upping whatever someone else says (teh best skit by far was when Molly Shannon turned teh tables on Wiig's character). The only non-annoying characters are the weekend update ones, but they become annoying because they are just awful characters whos sole purpose it utter catch-phrases.

Agree with you on the celeb impersonations.

Lorne really ought to send this guy an eight year contract right now.

SNL has always been hit and miss. I guarantee if you looked back at whatever era you think was funniest you'd notice the same winner-clunker ratio. The current cast as a whole is actually their strongest of the last decade.

For perspective's sake I have to ask -- what recent sketch comedy do you deem to be good?
The debate was funny but I turned the channel when Kenan showed up during the update.
Yeah, the rest was completely horrible.

Someone showed it to me on YouTube. It wasn't like Tina Fey doing Sarah Palin, that's for sure. And "Saturday Night Live" hasn't been funny for a long time. They've asked me to do the show a ton of times. I used to watch it when Eddie Murphy was there and Joe Piscopo and Bill Murray. I don't even know who's on the show now.
No, he's right.

Not really. The Eddie Murphy years were probably a lot crappier than you remember. Plus, Marky Mark was about five years old when Murray was on SNL, so his nostalgia rings a little false.
It's not like the Samberg sketch was biting criticism, either. It was a comically absurd way for Samberg to work in a Wahlberg impression. What a cry baby.

They're both right. Not to nitpick but Marky Mark would've been 11 or 12 when Eddie was on SNL (I had to look it up, I didn't realize he was turning 40 in a few years)
