Jim Henson exhibit at the Center for Puppetry Arts

Went to the Center yesterday for a preview tour of the new Henson exhibit in the lobby of the Center. Cheryl Henson, eldest of Henson's daughters, gave the tour. The collection is pretty small, but it's still impressive. They have several of the puppets from Labyrinth, a couple from Emmett Otter's Jugband Christmas, and some from Fraggle Rock. Oh, and Big Bird from Sesame Street. For anyone who has a soft spot for the work of Henson, it's a cool exhibit.

Saw a fantastic exhibit years and years ago in San Francisco. They had the original Kermit and the SNL monsters. It was amazing. Is there any Dark Crystal stuff on hand for this one?

I want to see this in the worst way, but I can't make the trip to Atlanta. Schedule shit is killing me.

There are no Dark Crystal pieces in this exhibit, but the actual museum section of the Center has one of the Skeksis (the one that successfully becomes the new leader after the death of the old one). And there's an exhibit in another room that houses the Muppets that Henson himself would puppeteer (with one extremely notable exception). I think they have a Mystik in storage, but it's in very bad shape (the latex is rotting away).

The Center's goal is to raise enough money to open a Henson wing, where they'd display many more exhibits permanently. The current exhibits are pretty small, but they're presented well. It's cool to look at Sir Didymus or the Doorkeepers from Labyrinth up close.

Oh, and they had Ma and Emmett from Emmett Otter's Jugband Christmas on display, which for me was worth it all by itself. As a kid I thought that special was just about perfect.
