Strange Things Afoot

Didn't Faraci report this exact same thing like a year or two ago? There was this big thread about how a prequel is, at its core, a flawed idea because we all know what happened to the Norwegian expedition, not terribly good for supense. Hell, I even call bouncing around ideas for a concept expanding sequel.

I look forward to every vaguely Scandanavian character actor turning up in this.

I don't really give a shit about knowing the outcome. As my pappy-in-law said at my wedding, happiness and Thing prequels are a journey, not a destination. I look forward to this guy's rich character arc:

That's a picture of Rob Bottin posing with his sculpture.

Or did you know that and that was the joke and I'm just screwing it up?

It was the only pic I could find at...3:46AM of the melted Norwegian-Thing.

I have to agree, not very crazy about the Norwegian story since we already know what happened there. seems like a flawed idea. And it doesn't really matter how fleshed out the characters and their arcs are... because we already know enough about the Thing and how it likes to hide in people, that even that is no big surprise anymore. I don't thing The Thing should be revisited at all since it is likely just going to be the same story with some shoddy characters figuring out the same stuff we already know. As a concept, it just doesn't lend itself to sequels or prequels. But if they can figure out a way to do it, power to 'em, i suppose.

An idea was mentioned some time ago that they might do a sequel, and someone suggested they have the thing reach civilization. I wholeheartedly second this idea, assuming thay do it well, because I envision 1970's "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" in the streets mayhem as Things get to the point they don't have to act in secret anymore, and there's just wholesale takeovers in the streets, with all the effects laden goodness that implies. If nothing else, that could be a stunning visual spectacle.

I used to be against this idea, but now I say go for it, as long as it doesn't fuck up the fantastic ending of the Carpenter original(I don't want to know who was the thing*).
Maybe a Predator 2 type situation, where the events from the first film are only briefly mentioned.

*Apparently the video game gave this away, but eh, I don't count that.

One thing's for sure. Ending the film with a Swed (Norwegians, Mac!) gunning for a dog only to get a bullet straight in his eye is pretty anti-climatic.

I could go for a prequel about the Norwegian team. We'd definitely be in for another downbeat ending.

As for the Thing reaching civilization? That'd make for a great "sequel" if this prequel does well. I remember John Carpenter once talking about some of the different ideas that had come up over the years for a potential Thing sequel. One of them was quite similar to what they did with the video game and another became the comic that they did (both of which JC was a fan of). The one I always liked though involved MacReady being rescued and en route back to the mainland on a submarine.............with The Thing on board and making it to the mainland in the end. Always thought that would have been cool and it sounded like Carpenter really loved the idea. I can't seem to find the interview though. Anyway, he could never get Universal to fund it, so it's a moot point I guess. Still, it'd make for a great follow-up to the prequel (if it's successful).

Isn't Ron Moore scripting this film, by the way?

A co-worker is fond of saying they have yet to make a bad film that takes place on a submarine. "Das boot", "U-571", "Crimson Tide". . .

You may wanna direct him to Asylum's masterpiece, starring Lorenzo Lamas...

And wasn't K-19: The Widowmaker supposed to be fairly meh?

Didn't see it, but I heard it was good.
K-19, that is. 30,000 Leagues is in a "league" of its own.
