What's the time limit on threads

Just to get a general consensus what's the over/under on making threads if another one exists. I'm currently using the 'if a new one wasn't made post site change it's fair game' rule but a lot of people seem to view any thread, even one a decade and a half old, as being the legitimate thread.

If it exists, simply bump it. Why the need to have been the creator of the thread?

To plug a blog?

If I can find an old thread easily enough with google (due to the fact that the chud search function won't look pre-server move) by searching strictly on chud.com, I post in those. If not, I wouldn't work up a sweat digging just to start a discussion.

I generally don't like clutter, and there may be some interesting discussion and points made in the old threads to generate new discussion. I guess it might depend on whether you want the baggage of the past or if you want to start fresh... and if you have something fresh or worth saying on the subject.

EDIT: What Devin said. And if you "know" another one exists, why not post in it?

Y'see if I wanted to discuss Into The Wild or The Fountain I'd go and dig up their respective threads, because they're massive and fairly recent. Digging up an 11 post thread from 2003 about Tremors just seems odd.

Yes, it makes more sense to start another eventual 11-post thread about Tremors in 2008.

We'd surely get some off topic witty repartee that would push the new thread to 20 posts! 14 of which would be one poster.

I don't get what's so bad about creating a new thread though, is it a bandwidth thing?

Why do we bother archiving threads? Why not just purge all inactive threads after six months? Some boards do that.

Hey, we're up to 18.

That's because EdHocken only just discovered it. He'll have it up to 55 posts by the end of lunch, west coast.

Spike, Look at the Lebowski thread it wouldn't make a big deal if it wasn't a resurrected thread

I tend to do a search first and if I can't find anything I will start a new thread.

Which I figured was the best rule of thumb.

Which is what I do, quick search using the forums own engine and then I'll make a thread if one doesn't seem to exist.

On a related note: is it okay to double post if my post is the last post on the page. I mean, it's annoying to write something and have no one see it or my name. This way, I'll be the first thing everyone sees whenever the page is opened.

The idea is that we are a community, as such, an older thread will have value for the nostalgia as much as it might for the content. On top of the fact that certain discussions are perennial, and many of us who've been here for a long period of time will either have not changed our minds, or will enjoy or blush at revisiting our younger selves.

Also, searching the name of the thread + chud forums in google works wonders. I'm not being condescending, but if the search feature doesn't turn up anything, that's another option to consider.

What Rath said. I've always had shitty luck with the search feature on vBulletin-based forums.

And yeah, just bump the threads for Christ's sake. It's good to read something of substance.
