RE: The Veracity of Idiocracy

I get it, Mike Judge was right. But, as the lead singer of The Smiths once sang, that joke's not funny any more.

Palin wouldn't do shit about no burrito coverings.
I'm kind of scared to go anywhere near a Costco. If a greeter professes his love, then all of my fears have been confirmed. Come to think of it, Dwayne Elizondo Mountain Dew Herbert Camacho might not be any more qualified than Palin, but he might be marginally less scary.
Well, the Rpublicans strongest argument to their followers is ultimately no more sophisticated than that Obama talks like a fag and his shit's all retarded.

And as Andre already mentioned. It's a joke, but it get's less funny as we continue slouching towards November
post #5 of 49
Ever since the first time I saw it my description to people has been that it's the scariest view of the future ever captured on film. And the more I hear from people the less funny it becomes.

I live in a small town in Maryland right now. When I was getting my haircut a couple months back there was another kid about my age (24) in the chair next to me. He and the barber were talking about the election and how they couldn't trust Obama because:

1) "Obama is only one letter from Osama".
2) "The White House is called the White House for a reason".

I could only cringe.

Water? Do you mean the stuff that is used in toilets?

Damn fine flick and the last two times I showed it to people, they laughed but later said that it was quite scary. I hope more people watch and share as it is easily at the top of the "Share With Others Movie List".

On a related note, the day that I walk past HOT TOPIC and they have Idiocracy gear will be a fine day.

This could also go in the "Tired Shit" thread. If one more fucking person tries to draw a weak-shit parallel between something and Idiocracy, I'm probably going to have them sent to creativity prison.

Jake, I like you and all, but I'm really tempted to start a "One or two things that don't annoy Jake" thread. Do you need a hug big guy?

Nah, getting laid on a regular basis and everything.

I just have one specific friend who trots out Idiocracy as a benchmark for EVERY ASPECT OF HUMAN BEHAVIOR AND CULTURE AND IT MAKES ME WANT TO ABUSE HER EMOTIONALLY.

And yeah, things that don't annoy me? Rare. I'm still a pretty happy guy, though, so it's all cool for school.

Yes, the republicans techniques for winning are similar to Idiocracy, because Mike Judge was railing against the culture of W. And a lot of people are stupid. It doesn't even take a smart person to point that out.

I'd just tell them I was supposed to getting OUT of creativity prison.

"Idiocracy is coming true!" is the new "This is just a Wag The Dog scenario!"
The reason pointing out things are like Idiocracy is not funny, is because too many things are like Idiocracy. It was funny while watching the movie, its damn depressing in real life.
The upshot to all of this is that Idiocracy got unceremoniously dumped by Fox and when it finally was released on DVD a lot of people didn't understand it or think it was funny, when in fact, it will be considered one of the satirical masterpieces of an era in which satire is regularly hunted down and shot.

I hear ya man. I really REALLY do.

Also "Idiocracy" is the new Nazi/Hitler comparison.

If only Idiocracy was funny as well.
I agree. I gave up after five minutes. It was an ugly unfunny repetitive movie.

Now if we can only remove: Perfect Storm and Game-Changer from the vocabulary. I swear to god I'm gonna lose it if I hear those words again.

Maybe Jake would prefer for folks to go back to weak-shit parallels with Chayefsky for a while. Or maybe Heller.
Come on people. Let's find new shit to run into the ground. We can do this. We're Americans godammit!

While we're at it, is there any way we can declare a moratorium on the use of "-gate" to describe any and all political scandals? Troopergate, Glaciergate, Babygate, Goatfuckgate, whatever. It's really annoying, and kind of nonsensical. Watergate made sense, as it was the name of the damn hotel. Why name everything else after it, as though it were on the same level, for better or worse? That's one we've really run aground.

Yep, just another regular Joe, salt-of-the-earth, Nascar-lovin Republican alright. This guy is obviously no elitist like Obama.

I think the real question is, what was a Republican deleage that smarmy doing with a purse, necklace, and $4,000 earrings? No wonder he was a big Giuliani supporter.

I don't know where you got the idea to complain about people citing Idiocracy. (rolls eyes)

But lets face facts: Obama is losing because certain white people don't trust a black man who is smarter than them. Obama is smarter than 99 percent of white people (and all people for that matter).

If he dumbed down his speech patterns like "Dubya" and started sounding like Snoop Dogg, he would be up by 10 points now.

People don't trust someone who is smarter than them. I have a theory that republican's distrust intellectuals because of Nixon (who was a genius). Nixon got too fucking deep into the nitty gritty of his campaign and thus caused himself to be complacent in Watergate. Dubya would have just plead ignorance and the story would have gone away after a week.

If Nixon decided to be ignorant of what his campaign was doing, then he would have completed his second term and might have even changed the constitution inorder to be president in 1985.

Yes, Republicans have - since Nixon - painted Democrats as Elitists. That's what the silent majority was all about. Obama would not be up 10 points if he sounded stupid. Though there is a percentage of the audience that is voting for Obama because he's black, arguably the majority of his supporters are behind him because of his beliefs, policies, and plans of action. All of which comes from someone who is smart. The undecideds aren't undecided because he's not "black enough."
So he's basically saying that if Obama had more bling-bling he'd win this shit? Really?
Obama needs to make a rap video.

You know, because he's black, and all black people know how to rap.

I wish I could find it, but there was this great op-ed in the NYT, which talked about how before Goldwater, the Republican ideal WAS elitism. That was what conservatism was, prudent and wise rulers, culled from the best and oldest institutions, preserving policies and attitudes that have been judged to be the most useful to our country. Pretty ironic.

EDIT: Here it is: http://www.nytimes.com/2008/09/16/op...brooks.html?em

That idea is old as time and started with Hamilton and The Federalists.

I've posited in the past that the Republican party has shifted into a position more akin to the High Federalists. The "small government" is lip service and propaganda. The same with the social mores issues and God talk. The Republicans are a party built on aristocracy and a regimented economic and political heirarchy with a strict social caste structure built in.

BTW: I have talked to some ignorant white people here in the Philly suburbs. The reason people paint Obama as a communist/secret muslim/black rebel leader is that he "has a hidden agenda. In the way that he talks".

I translate this to "Obama uses big words that my dumb ass can't understand, so he must be an evil mad scientist trying to take over the country."

Indeed. This played in front of a movie the other day in its entirety. If we in the northeast have to sit through this, then make moviegoers in the south sit through a Michael Moore infomercial or something.

I saw this before BURN AFTER READING, and I actually shouted out, "FUCK YOU, Kid Rock!"... the ad was straight out of STARSHIP TROOPERS, so bizarre.
