Action Draft: Forgotten Heroes - Page 2

I had too much faith in snagging Wheels on Meals and Yojimbo in the bonus that my only alternatives consisted of:

Braveheart (already had Saving Private Ryan as my large-scale war movie though)

City of Violence (the poor man's Eastern Kill Bill)

Meltdown (but I already had Jet Li and Billy Chow via Fist of Legend)

and American Yakuza (which I should have picked over 3k Miles, but love for the Russell can do funny things to a man's judgement)

Great taste, Sackley. I pondered on drafting Kitano's Brother, but it slipped my mind in the later rounds. If I didn't consider it a drama instead of action.. I think Hana-bi would have been a 1st rounder for me. Oh well, another draft..

THANK YOU.

Also, you mentioned it in the post earlier, but either King Kong should've gone somewhere this draft.

My personal undrafted list:

Bonnie and Clyde
Duel
North By Northwest
Fists Of Fury (a.k.a. Chinese Connection)
Sleepy Hollow
Princess Mononoke
Ninja Scroll
Pitch Black
Sin City
Dawn Of The Dead '05
Matrix Reloaded
Kill Bill Vol 2
Pirates of the Caribbean
Superman
Collateral
Spider-Man 2
X2
Constantine

Weird how after the first couple of rounds, Walter Hill was getting shut out. Then he just exploded. Swear if we'd done another Bonus round, someone woulda drafted SUPER NOVA!

Is Crossroads an action movie?

I thought of going for a Viggo double-bill in the bonus round of AMERICAN YAKUZA and HISTORY OF VIOLENCE. Ultimately my desire to fit in both Brandon Lee and Jeff Wincott (not to mention shirtless love-making Billy Drago) was too strong to pass up.
That would have been a freaking amazing double-bill though, and my personal favorite of the bonus rounders.

I'm not sure if I've ever even seen a Jeff Wincott or Gary Daniels movie all the way through. Run down some titles, gentleman, essentials. Apparently Rage is all the rage.

Thank god nobody dipped into the Lorenzo Lamas well. Snake Eater, anyone?

I joke, but I might have dropped a Don 'The Dragon' Wilson pic if left completely to my own devices.
Yeah, Justin the lack of Spider-Man love was surprising. Between the 3 misfire, and Batman fever, he's really freefalling. How soon we forget the perfection of 2.

Bonnie & Clyde woulda been great.

Am I the only one surprised PROJECT A went before A2? (Always thought the sequel was Chan's best)

Oh surely you weren't that desperate.

By the way, I'm kinda pissed it took a commercial on FX to remind me about V For Vendetta, especially consdering how much I defend that flick.
Is it wrong that I was also considering drafting (as a pseudo-joke) Muse's video for 'Knights of Cydonia'? Now THERE'S an action/kung-fu/western/sci-fi film for ya...
I wish there was more than just 5 spots. I had quite a few others, and now all these unlisted picks make me wish I could have put them, but then again I'm very pleased with the way my picks went.

Almost all of my first choices I got. Even my bonus ones. The Rookie was almost in the regular draft, but I figured I'd put it in the bonus draft. It is one of my favorite flicks, as the B-Action regulars can attest.
Awwww shit, I'm so mad I missed out on Harley Davidson. Rourke and Johnson in all their glory.

Eko, bless you, I think you're the only fan of The Rookie on the planet. That one's a painful misfire.
Well, I'm not the only one, my Dad likes the flick too.

I'm watching The Untouchables right now with my brother, and that's one I'd have loved to put in the draft if there was more room.

Speaking of Don Johnson, I toyed with Dead Bang in the bonus round. I really like that picture, think it's unfairly overlooked.

The Mechanic, the Charles Bronson movie, should have grabbed that. Also, 10 to Midnight.

Surprised that nobody grabbed Sharky's Machine. It's a messy, nonsensical movie, but strangely appealing. That reminds me, any fans of STICK around here?

Don't want to turn this into the B action thread, but has anybody seen SCARRED CITY, a surprisingly good DTV affair with Stephen Baldwin, Tia Carrere, and Chaz Palminteri? Or Double Tap, with Stephen Rea and Heather Locklear?

Also, believe it or not, here's a good Jim Belushi movie (I swear): Justice http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0157871/
post #66 of 200
I've seen Scarred City, and yeah, it's actually a pretty good flick.

The two that I own are RAGE and RECOIL. Both are pretty good. I still need to check out RIOT.
With a bit of "Oh, aren't I clever" was gonna draft Adventures of Robin Hood back-to-back with Smokey & The Bandit. Judas, ruined that.

Stick is a hard to find one. Been searching for a while.

Love The Mechanic! Forgot to mention flirting with Mr. Majestyk, Charley Varrick, Prime Cut, Sorcerer & EMPEROR OF THE NORTH POLE.

If you haven't seen the last one, add it to your queue immediately!
Princess Mononoke?
Also, not enough Bond.
Anyone consider Apocalypse Now?

I enjoy SCARRED CITY. Lots of recognizable faces pop up in that one. I know you've mentioned DOUBLE TAP before but I've never been able to track it down.

RIOT is not quite as good as RAGE or RECOIL, but still plenty of fun to be had. Patrick Kilpatrick has a delightfully over-the-top Irish accent and it's easily my favorite Sugar Ray Leonard film. No doubt it.

WHITE TIGER is also a decent Daniels outing. Solid villain turn from Cary Tagawa.

I thought somebody might grab it, but I sure didn't want to. Kind of thought Molt might take Siege of Firebase Gloria.

So I'm guessing nobody takes Dudikoff seriously any more, if they ever did. I think somebody mentioned it, but Avenging Force is kind of the real deal, I mean it's leagues above the American Ninja movies.

Regarding Jeff Wincott, I came across a movie on Netflix called Black Friday, and it sounded interesting. Thoughts?

If I was being honest with myself, I would have taken China O Brian, although I know it's technically a piece of poop.

Thought about drafting THE BIG HEAT, with Glenn Ford, a Fritz Lang picture, vicious as hell.

I've been smacking my self in the head for forgetting BAD DAY AT BLACK ROCK. God damn that should have been in my draft. I suck.

Also, going classy here, but LE SAMORAI I toyed with as well. I know the snobs would want my neck for it, but it fits.

There's a Robert Duval flick, THE OUTFIT, we've talked about it before, but it's great stuff.

Another Andy Davis picture, THE PACKAGE with Gene Hackman and Tommy Lee Jones, deserved a shot.
Never saw BLACK FRIDAY but I've heard its pretty bad. That's sort of what I've learned about Daniels. He has 4 good films and an endless array of crud. Still dig the guy though, and look forward to seeing him in Dwight H. Little's TEKKEN in '09. Daniels, Cary Tagawa, Nathan Jones, and Luke Goss? Never really played the game but I am there with that cast.

Wincott's batting average, at least from what I've seen, is a bit better. That's why he's now my favorite of the C-listers.

Speaking of BLACK FRIDAY, what of BLACK SUNDAY?
Hey guys...

My list has been officially compiled with related links.

Was browsing through this. You know Keith? I was just about to draft Romero's Dawn of the Dead. It's more of an action film to me than a horror movie. Then I got this theme going on and it kind of fell out of my list.

I too was surprised that no one grabbed a Jack Ryan. Red October or Patriot Games seemed like fair bets.

Shocked at the exclusion of Air Force One as well. What, does no one remember Get off my plane?

Breakdown is the movie I refer to as "The Stupid Man" and I thought there was a cult for it. Guess I was wrong or people just plain overlooked it.

You're all talking up Dudikoff and his exclusion. But what happened to Jeff Speakman? I was sure someone would grab The Perfect Weapon. Where did that go? I would even have accepted Land of the Free (a ridiculous action piece of shit with William Shatner as the chief villain... at one point he threatens to "Cut his fucking balls off!" but ultimately receives one of the dumbest final boss deaths in history.)

This is fun. Let's keep talking.

(Yeah... Above the Law is pretty essential and would have made a better pick than Hard to Kill. Really.)

North by Northwest? Possibly the first "Big Time Action Blockbuster" in history. It has all the elements of a modern action picture in the Joel Silver mold. I think Hitchcock set the template with that one.
You could almost make a case Ghost Busters, like The Blues Brothers, works as an Action comedy.

Would've loved to have seen Pam Grier represented. A true female Action star and sex symbol. Everybody knows Foxy Brown & Coffy, but I prefer The Big Bird Cage & The Big Doll House.

Completely blanked on Black Sunday.

If you were going to cheat in that respect, Welles' CHIMES AT MIDNIGHT would be the way to go.

Yeah, DAS BOOT surprised me not going either. I think we were all thinking more personal action, but still...

I'm surprised nobody went after NORTH BY NORTHWEST (btw I love the fact that Grant survives his initial confrontation soley by the fact that he can hold his liquor much better than most). Or SABOTEUR. Or THE 39 STEPS. You probably could make a case for THE BIRDS as well.

I really thought long and hard about a Douglas Fairbanks Sr. picture. Likely THE MARK OF ZORRO, although DON Q, SON OF ZORRO actually has a better climax. I haven't seen THIEF OF BAGHDAD in forever, so I wasn't likely to pick that, but on reputation....

I'm stunned by the lack of BLADE RUNNER.

I really was considering all Kurosawa. SANJURO, THE HIDDEN FORTRESS, and SANSHIRO SUGATA were on my list.

Big shout out to Keith for running this thing. I was a lot of fun.
I did seriously consider Harley Davidson - its a film I enjoy unrepentantly (Sizemore is such a douche) - but I thought I would get laughed out of town.

Oh! Oh! The N-Word right here! That was almost my pick when I lost Mortal Kombat in the bonus, but I went Grindhouse instead.
Some choices were broke down by how I define my action movies. Blade Runner is my 2nd favorite movie ever, but I don't see it as action.

I'm actually stunned that Ninja Scroll didn't get picked as far as anime goes. That was by backup for The Hunted.
I wouldn't have laughed at you Sackley. Harley Davidson (etc) has its moments... And it's the first chapter in Tom Sizemore's "falling to his death from a high altitude due to a wardrobe malfunction" trilogy. Followed by Strange Days.

Paparazzi would have been a fine trilogy capper. But they gave the death that was rightfully (and deservedly) his to Kevin Gage.

Hopefully he sticks around long enough to complete this very important cinematic statement.

Gunmen does deserve more love.

Maybe it would have it if more people would see the fact that it's actually a rather inspired remake of The Good, The Bad and The Ugly with Van Peebles as Eastwood, Leary as Van Cleef and Lambert in the immortal Tuco role.
No one picked Highlander? I thought that would've been obvious for a Lambert flick.

You know I watched it during the summer and it's just aged horribly. It's not even funny in the way it's cheesy it's just pretty bad.
'Highlander' is a guilty pleasure at best. Apart from Clancy Brown's turn as the Kurgan, it hasn't aged well at all. It will be interesting to see what they do with the remake.
I agree. I know that the excessive remakes and relaunches get annoying but Highlander is a series that lends itself to it.
You know despite its many flaws, I am still a fan of the Highlander series. The TV series with Adrian Paul was especially good and Highlander: Endgame had Donnie Yen in it.
I'll definitely be checking out the remake.
You know who really got the cold shoulder? Superheroes. Dark Knight was the only one drafted, I think. Yeah, Spidey got shutout, but so did Superman, Iron Man, all other Batmans, Wolverine, and of course, Hancock.
And Condorman!
I thought about the superhero movies but I kind of see them as something different. I know it doesn't make sense but I just couldn't bring myself to pick them. It's probably my predominantly hard R slant.

Are you fucking joking? Glazing Donnie Yen in shit will still make him smell like shit.

And yes, I completely forgot: Sha Po Lang. Donnie Yen and Sammo Hong in a great gangster/martial art movie.

I made a very strict rule for myself not to draft comicbook movies, as they are all essentially action films.

Also... Lord of War?

xXx or Pitch Black surprised me for their non appearances.
You know, I realize the film's got its flaws and detractors, but a part of me kinda wishes the first Blade flick got some love. My only two gripes with the movie are that the final Blade/Frost fight sucked ass, and that it never gets as good as that fight at the Blood Bath.

Yeah. Even The Chronicles of Riddick, but it somewhat didn't fit my theme. Vin Diesel got shafted.
