FUCK JAN!
I keep sharing slots with him and we end up butting heads over a pick often.

Can't wait.

Also, my slot guarantees i won't get my first pick. damn!
Damn, I'm up first. I'll need to spending all weekend thinking about this. Of course thanks to unemployment. I have the time. *thumbs up*
post #3 of 1962
Alright I can deal with noon. There are a few films that are going to get picked that I'm going to 110% disagree with. Can't wait.
I'm really interested to see what weighs heavier in judging failure with this crowd. To me it seems there are a number of categories: Commercial Failure, Critical Failure, are the obvious ones but what if a movie made a ton of money but sucks is that not as big a failure as a movie that bombed with both critics and at the box office? Is a movie that everyone expected and wanted to love but sucks worse than a movie that sucks more but everyone expected it to suck from the beginning? This should be interesting.
I definitely know my angle on the draft, but some of the films I would take are obvious as failures on their own without an overlying theme, so they might get taken.
That interesting, I really wonder if I should put in a theme. But my drafts are so freakin random so I don't know how I'll go about it. I just notice the first round doesn't seem to indicate a particular theme.
I'm just going with commercial films that suck the big one. I don't see much point in drafting DTV titles, unless it cost $100m, but how many of those are there? I'm using the draft to expose films that are just not good and had every possibility to be really quite good.

Or have I missed the point completely?

It's not just about making money or being bad. A movie might be good, but it might try to achieve something that's not. That's a big fail.
It's all depending on how we take it.

I think it's an extra bit of a challenge. Instead of picking the most obvious film available, you have to try and make sure it works into your overall draft. I find it fun.
You mean ambitious but in your mind a giant opportunity? Yeah that can certainly mean fail and there are films out there that represent that.

That's true, I'm not one to go with the ultra-obvious ones, mainly because I haven't either seen them and can't make a real legitimate argument about them and because those picks are really boring because of their obviousness.

It's still fun to pick big films sometimes. In my 70s draft my theme was "Man against the world/underdogs" and my first and second picks were Chinatown then Rocky.
That's true, I'd just rather think about individual films rather than spending time on a theme that I know can get hijacked. Like I never paid attention to whether or not something is 'First round', like it was in the 80s draft. I picked Repo Man cuz I love it so, regardless of it being a first round pic. Or when I picked Gary Cole in the Repertory Company draft.
I don't think anyone picks films they don't like just because they're big. If they are I think they're missing the point.
Exactly. Which is why I don't participate in drafts unless I have a very good understanding of the ins and outs of the subject matter being drafted.
That's what I get for posting the Round One Draft List and then going for a one hour meeting...a thread opens up.
well if you want us to suspend discussion til the draft starts i understand
post #18 of 1962
My criteria is going to be entirely personal. Movies that I deem failures. For whatever reason. It's going to be an interesting weekend. How many rounds is this going to be?
My desired first pick will probably go first. This is CHUD, after all. But I have back-up plans. If it doesn't go, I'll be getting it for a ridiculous steal.
I need to work on a list. That I should do.
I'm not sure if I'll have a theme or not this time. There's a couple of films that I just have to kick in the balls. If I can work a theme out of the remaining picks, I will. Most important thing though is kicking that first pick in the balls.

And for the record Hocken, picking Gary Cole first is still fucking brilliant.
Ed: Nah, go ahead and post. As always, NO MENTION of specific films until they have been drafted PLEASE.

I predict a whole mess of 'Fuck YOUs' getting tossed around next week.
I get the feeling this is going to turn into 'films Trejo would pick in any other draft', and as such I have no clue how I'm going to go about making picks this time around..

Early round 1 slot and I'm totally stumped. This does not bode well!
I'll be taking only the shittiest of films. Commercial or critical success are irrelevent. Total shittiness is what counts. The only rule is I have to have hated it, meaning no drafting unseen films. There's a couple Best Picture nominees in my head.

As to THEME, I usually take one or two picks and then see what I've got and what's still on the table. No need to force from the opening.
I expect a lot of obvious choices to go later due to the nature of this draft. They're all failures in one way or another, and that usually lends to films being forgettable as well, so I envision a later round with me saying "I completely forgot that was even a movie".
I have no idea what I'm going to do. I'm going to mostly wing it.
I know what my ideal theme will be; whether or not I can fully reallize that theme will depend upon what's off the table in the early rounds.

I have like 5 different themes planned. And none of them feel right. Fuck you Judas! You putt all the pressure on me hahahah
post #29 of 1962
I'm hoping someone's theme will be just to take beloved/classic movies in order to piss people off. I haven't seen one of those types around here in awhile. It's always great when someone turns up spouting stuff like "Citizen Kane is overrated!"

That's what I figured but you can never be too careful ya know. But you are right, there will be more fuck you's than a Mamet picture by the time this is over.
This one's gonna be ba-rutal. I have no idea what I'm doing.

Funny, I had joked about doing that exact same thing.
The theme for my draft will be "Payback." Just saying.
Got a great draft theme, but I fear its gonna get shut down by others' picks.

Ah well, we'll see.
I got my day 1 pick all sorted out. Other than that, I have no bloody clue what I'm doing.

Save it for the actual draft man! But I'll be insanely curious to see your take on this.
I'm thinking of imposing a rule on the draft: You can only draft movies that you have actually seen. Thoughts? Too limiting?

I've never drafted a movie i haven't seen anyways.
I wouldn't think that anyone has. What's the point of that?

I think this is a bit of an unspoken rule, right? Anyone who drafts something they haven't seen but do so based on general opinion is being a jackass.

The other thing is there's no way to know for certain if the person has actually seen the movie or not unless they say so.
I can already tell that this draft is going to be something special. If you want proof, just go to the Lists page and see what has been done. Renn Brown's picture of garbage is priceless.
I'm gonna fuck you up bitches
Watch it Savage. You and your french-canucks are on notice!*

*Yes, it's 5:30 in the morning here at the moment. As to why I'm up? I've got no real explanation.
I realize the sessions are much shorter but if I'm not around feel free to play on. I've had a weekend from hell and am just getting to sleep for the first time in about a day minus an hour or so. This draft should be interesting I have not prepared at all and have no idea what i'll be picking.
You bastards had better not take my first pick...that's all that I've got to say.
ABout an hour and twenty away from game time.
Damn, something just came up and I'm going to be out during my time slot. I'll just post my pick when I get back, which should be after everyone's gone.
