Fail Draft : Discussion - Page 3

I can see someone defending 'I Am Legend' in the bonus round.
We can pick anything we want right? Even sacred cows that we personally think fail on every level?
It was between Battlefield and Batman for 1st pick here.
I actually think I AM LEGEND has some -great- parts in it (the video store part 2).. maybe that makes its eventual slip into mediocrity that much worse.
I wanted to pick Phantom Menace.
Keith: Yes, just be prepared to defend it.
Batman and Robin is just a masterpiece of bad ideas. Schwarzenegger is horribly mis-cast as Freeze, the pairing of Freeze and Ivy makes no sense, throwing Bane into the mix makes even less sense, and adding Batgirl in makes the first two look like strokes of genius. The sad thing is that Clooney really isn't all that bad as Bruce or Batman, but that's like being the best waiter on the Titanic.

I saw this opening night, and a fire alarm went off about fifteen minutes before the end and we had to leave. To this day, I have still never seen the ending.
I Am Legend is exactly what this draft is about for me - potential hideously squandered. The first hour being so good is exactly why I picked it.
Speaking of the bonus round, can we pick a film that's already been picked and defend it?
There's a little too much win in I Am Legend for me to think it's a good first-rounder.

EDIT: Touche

Richard: Yes. you can pick a movie that was drafted this week if you want.

You defend Batman & Robin and i'm no longer inviting you to my couch for vacation.
I'm sorry, any film that decides to follow up the beatifully tragic depiction of Mr. Freeze by Paul Dini and company with hockey goons and Freeze dancing to the fucking Freeze Miser song deserves no defense.
I can see how someone could enjoy 'Batman and Robin' on a so-bad-it's-good, level.

Someone ELSE.

Hey, i don't enjoy the film on any level. But i can have fun with it. Laughing AT it. Not WITH it.
Trejo has a better chance of defending AIDS than Batman and fucking Robin.
Watch an episode or two of the Adam West series right before you pop in B&R and you'll be in the correct frame of mind to enjoy the hell out of yourself
post #121 of 1962
Bull. And Shit.
I can't agree with the I Am Legend pick. It definitely wasn't all that it could have been but there's more than enough good in there to keep it off this list I think.
The Batman TV show at least knew it was campy. I refuse to credit Schumacher with that much self-awareness.

I am totally in with what Sackley said. Squashed opportunities.
Will Smith has done worse.

No one defends SW 1?
Besides, the ending is sort of the whole point of the original story.

I can defend it some more if you want, but when I said earlier in the discussion that I was just gonna pick bad films, some people said that wasn't really the point for most of you. So, I'm going with films that have lots of good things going for them and one way or another piss it all away, as well as perhaps some controversial "respected" films that I guess I just don't get.

If you can honestly tell me that I Am Legend isn't a sterling example of the former (especially given the source material and money thrown at it) then I'm all ears. Otherwise, back off man. I'm a scientist.
I'm sorry, but if you can't appreciate Arnold's performance in that movie, and you think you're laughing at rather than with, you missed the point. And you're wrong. I have no defense for the rest of the movie.

I used to defend it by saying it's supposed to show the death of innocence, both in Anakin and the Republic, and so what we're seeing is basically the last adventure of the real Jedi before things fall apart. But after seeing the other two prequels, this just feels so detached from everything else, as if its sole purpose is to introduce Anakin and prove the effects can work.
Ah, Battlefield Earth, a movie I wanted to walk out in the first 5 minutes...and I wanted to see it too! Needless to say my friend and I's 12-year-old selves would take a long time to recover from that shit. I would have walked out, but my other friend was scared his mom would be pissed for leaving it.

Batman and Robin, of course.

Another friend refers to I Am Legend as I Am Disappointment.

Oh, and I so dig Cruising.
Slamming The Phantom Menace is so passe. Out of all the shit out there, someone couldn't pick anything worse than TPM? I can't wait to see the bucket scraping around Round 3. Especially, if this is the best you've got to offer.
I will defend the pod race and the 3-way lightsabre battle in SW:TPM. Those parts were so good that they felt that they belonged in another film. Apart from those moments, it's a total failure.

Episode I killed the biggest franchise in the history of film. Maybe not financially, but it killed it's legacy and how we respond to the words "Star Wars" today.

It's the biggest fail of all time. On a more detailed level, it made The Force a genetic disorder.

Fuck It.
See, Renn knows whats what.

I guess when I say it's enjoyable as hell and a fun time, I'm speaking entirely about Arnie's Freeze. It's his movie. Schumacher may not have known he was making a 60's camp throwback, but Arnold nails a modern, big-screen version of the West series' villains pitch-perfect.

Plus.. his dialogue is just fucking hilarious. I don't want to live in a world where people don't quote Mr. Freeze on a regular basis.

I love the last third of that film. Everything prior is scattershot, to be generous.

Also, next year marks the 10th Anniversary of justified righteous hatred of Jar Jar Binks.
Gulager missed his window. Hit it, guys.

But, a first round failure? Please. Save that shit for someone else. You kids need to see more movies from before 1990.
Menace still has 10 minutes of Darth Maul to entertain me, which is more than a lot of other movies. The rest is still shit thought.

RE: I Am Legend

Besides the other problems, the shoddy CGI kills the tense mood of the first half, and takes you right out of the story. So bad!
The beginning of I Am Legend is good but then it just falls apart horribly. To me that makes it even worse and then you compare it to the source material and it knocks it down another peg. Give me an honest failure over wasting potential any day.
I don't think I'd have gone for it first round, but Nabors picked a hard little turd there.

Totally forgot about Southland. Probably for the best.
By the way, along with the whole "Speed Racer on Blu-Ray" thing last night, I've never forgiven you for making me stick with Southland Tales till the end, you sadistic bastard.
never saw 'Southland Tales'...do I WANT to to verify the level of fail that it achieves?

You don't even want to know what kind of bucket scraping I'm willing/going to bring to this table.

Also, it's part of a theme. If I was just namedropping a bunch of shitty films, yeah, it would be passe. I wanted at least one big 'duh' film before I'm digging through obscurity.

Kids? 1990? Please.

You needed to watch it on it's entirety. You would have missed way too much otherwise.

The "duh" films are beneath you. Rise above, Trejo. Rise above!
Nabors, the quote that accompanies your Southland Tales pick is perfect.

I was kind of enamored with the movie, if only in the same way people slow down to check out car crashes as they drive past.

I'm pretty curious to see your 1st rounder now, Anderson
post #149 of 1962
I watched about 15 minutes of Southland. Why the fuck would I need to see any more of it?
No way I was passing on Southland Tales. It's quite possibly the worst film I've ever watched.
