I realize Battlefield Earth needs no explanation, but I did want to comment on the three central performances of failure in it. Each reacts differently to the movie around them. Barry Pepper seems to realize how bad it's going, and you can see the frustration in his eyes the whole way through. He's trying, very hard, to salvage at least his portion and deliver a real movie star performance, but there's simply no way, and he knows it. Forest Whitaker gives up entirely. Doesn't bother creating a character, doesn't bother putting any emotion behind his line readings, looks medicated, and couldn't possibly seem more embaressed or half-assed. And of course, Travolta. Travolta thinks he's in some kind of masterpiece of genre cinema. It's the most confident performance he's given since Pulp Fiction. It's a veritable symphony of hambone overacting. One for the ages, of shit. The film itself is also vile, full of scenes that make absolutely no sense, laughably ugly designs, and every third shot is a dutch angle. But it's Travolta that makes this such a stunner.
