John Doe

I kind of love his country-esque stuff. While I'm a huge fan of X, I've always preferred his semi-hick flair to that of the insanity of Exene Cervenka, though they're both great. I love the raucous early X material, but the likes of 4th of July and See How We Are still grab me due to Doe's vocal presence.

"Forever Hasn't Happened Yet" didn't really blow me away, but I'm still a massive fan of "Kissingsohard", "Meet John Doe", and even "A Year In The Wilderness" is a tight album.

Anyone else like Doe's solo stuff, or am I just babbling in the wind?

My special lady friend put one of his solo songs on my last mix CD and I was quite surprised by it. He's actually got a pretty good voice! And the female guests help quite a bit too. Very pretty arrangements...good stuff.

Golden State is a great song. Other stuff, eh.

I love, love, love the much-maligned late 80s X stuff (not so much the early 90s reunion albums, though). In fact, See How We Are may be my favorite X album, but it's such a completely different beast than, say, Los Angeles. And I consider "4th of July" one of my favorite X songs, too, which is weird since John Doe and Exene didn't write it (Dave Alvin contributed it during his brief stint in the band - then re-recorded a couple times later either with the Blasters or solo, I think).

As for the solo John Doe stuff... I'm so-so on it. I have Freedom Is..., but I don't listen to it much. I saw him in a small club on that tour, and it wasn't bad, but nothing particularly special. Still better than Exene's first couple solo albums. I have one of them, and the only reason I've even touched it in recent years is to see what songs Viggo Mortenson (her husband at the time) played on.
