Warhammer Online

A wise old man once told me:

So I am.

I've noticed that quite a few people are interested in giving WAR a try so here is a place for first impressions, general discussion and attempts to set up some kind of regular group of Chewers, maybe even a guild in the future. For those interested I'm Jagluther, playing a Witch-Hunter, on Karag-Dron(EN). Although if we manage to set something up I'm more than ready to start over.

First impressions time. I'm going to use WOW as a comparison a lot because let's face it, that's the point of reference. Also keep in mind that I'm only rank 8, so there's a lot of stuff I haven't seen yet:

On the technical side, the graphics are not up to Conan levels but they are definitely second best. The good thing about it is that it seems to run very smoothly. I haven't encountered any bugs yet but the UI seems a bit laggy at times. It also takes more time to load than WOW. Definitely a very polished experience so far.

Its strength is in the gameplay, though. First let's get the weakest part out of the way. The regular PVE quests are more of the same. "Kill 10 Hlargs", "Gather 5 Froozles" etc. The major addittion to the MMO genre though, Public Quests, work like a charm. They're quick, they're fun and offer great rewards. You don't even have to join a party; just start killing things. Then we get at what seems to be the main object of the game. RvR, as in Realm vs. Realm. These consist of Scenarios, which are analogous to WOW's Battlegrounds. The thing that for me makes them better than those in WOW is that they are much more a part of the game and don't feel tacked on. Its whole design slowly pushes you towards RvR. It works great, at least for me. While I've only joined a couple of Battlegrounds in WOW in two and a half years, in WAR I've already tried a couple of Scenarios.

So far I'm fairly certain I'll keep playing WAR for a while.

I enjoyed the public quests, but other than that not much else got my attention. While playing it was impossible to get into the RVR portions, so I have no opinion there.

I don't understand. Literally when you spawn your first toon you're a few steps from a war master who can port you in to a scenario. How would it be impossible to get into it?

You do have to go a little further down the road to get into the open world RVR stuff, but that's only level 7 or so if you go at a normal rate. If you spend extra time doing public quests you'd probably be 8 or 9 when you get there.
For some reason it just wouldn't load people into the scenarios when I was playing. I queued up and it just never allowed me to enter a scenario to give it a try.
I've gotten into scenarios within a minute or two of clicking the icon.

I've got a 11th level Chosen on the Mordheim server and have been having a blast with it. The RvR sometimes turns into a massacre because one side is so much bigger than the other, but in those cases you try to take as many as you can with you. The public quests have been a little more hit or miss -- sometimes there's so many people doing them that it's almost impossible to earn enough points to score loot, other times there's too few people to pull them off. But the the gear you can get for the influence you earn in them is worth the time to do them.

I have a level 11 White Lion on Grimnir and Im having a good time of it so far. Sadly, my server seems to be mostly Destruction people by a wide margin so the open rvr zones are a deathtrap without a couple solid groups and the power struggle bar at the top right always stays with them either in control or almost in control. That can get frustrating sometimes but the scenarios make up for it and I figure in time itll even itself out with any luck.

My class is alot of fun to play despite the occassional bug where my Lion will either disappear completely or simply have its control bar taken away to let it do what it wants. The biggest plus of it so far seems to be that nobody really seems to know for sure what to do against me in scenarios. When the big rushes of groups come up they always go for the healers and the tanks leaving me free to wreak havoc on them.

I can't believe I'm playing an MMO and mostly doing PvP. I love it so far. Last night I sat and played about three solid hours of open world RvR and had probably the best time I've ever had in an MMO. I love that even the squishier classes like the Witch Hunter I'm playing are quite hard to kill. One time as I was heading into the battle I ran into a Witch Elf, the Destruction equivalent to my class. We must have spent a couple of minutes DOTing, running away, snaring, healing ourselves and maneuvering. It was awesome until a Magus 3 ranks above me came and nuked me. And this is still Tier One out of the four this game has. The end game RvR must be fucking epic.

I am enjoying the hell out of this game. Level 11, and rank 9 renown Swordmaster (I generally dislike elves a lot, but I thought I would try something completely different from what I normally play). The PQs are pretty awesome. Sure there is not a group always there (if it is off peak, good luck, but then again good luck finding a group in any game). I can not count how many I have wandered into and just joined in. I even came in at the last boss (I tanked him) and won the top loot (a nice purple sword !). They have made grouping easy.

The scenarios have been fun. yeah it is capture the flag (I have only done the first one), but the fact that you level up and earn pvp points makes them more fun. You could just play the pvp portions and level your character up.

Graphics are exactly what they need to be. Everything looks good, I can run on max settings with no lag or any issues.

Open pvp has been fun so far. Superior numbers can rule the day (no surprise there), but if you get in a group that actual uses tactics it can work out well.

So far I have had tons of things to do. I would roll right from questing/exploring to scenarios, to open pvp, back to some scenarios, right into some PQs. I also like that each class has its own distinctive look. Great game so far.

Yeah I am playing a tank class, but once I got to level 8 I been ranking in the top 3 damage done (on my side, once I reached 10 its top 3 overall with only classes at my level or higher able to top me). I like that I am hard to kill, and I can pound out the offense.

I have also noticed suicide tactics work in the first scenario. I run down there respawn path as we are trying to cap the flag, right as a big group is coming up. Everyone will start attacking on me instead of stopping the guy from capping the flag. That gives enough time for reinforcements to show up and defend the flag. Sure I die, but we take the flag. It helps that I do not go down easy so it buys enough time.

In PQs and Scenarios I'm usually in the top quarter in damage done but I also die a lot. But that's the way I play my Witch Hunter. Go around the fight and attack the healers and draw attention to myself or patrol around the routes to the cap points and interrupt the reinforcements. Either way once I get a few guys fighting me I go down quite fast but at least they're not in the main fight.

I participated in the most epic battle Ive seen yet last night in Troll Country RvR(to the south where its connected to Ostland). We had a full warband plus another two groups or so and were defending a keep for around two hours from an equal amount of Destruction guys. I had a blast, and loot was dropping like crazy. It was my first time in a keep battle and I was surprised to find that it has its own defenses to work with like pouring acid(I can only assume...it was green so it wasnt boiling pitch like youd think) on people storming the gate or using the cannons mounted on top to mow down people from a distance. The downside to extended battles like that are that after the first 45 minutes or so of killing the same people you only get 1-10 RP per kill since you get less for recently killed people.

Still though it was more fun than I thought it would be. Battlegrounds had only been in wow for a month or so when I stopped playing that and it never really did much for me so I didnt expect to be liking it as much as I am.

The funnest pvp I ever had in WoW was pre-battlegrounds. The battles at TM or Crossroads were great fun. My server was 3 to 1 Alliance, so we were always out numbered. Lots of epic battles. I still remember the one were a guild was on its way, so they waited just out of view. We managed to send some more players over to were they waited, all this while out numbered by about 2.5 to 1. They then attacked from behind. Just as the Alliance turned around, we rushed out of TM. They had such great numbers, but we were crushing them in the confusion. They then broke and started retreating back to SS. They did in a mass chaos manor. I was a holy priest and I solo killed 5 or 6 of them (they were all 60's). We routed them bad. Then battlegrounds was released and that all ended (actually the honor system came out first and crippled it, but battlegrounds basically ended it). Those battles occurred almost all day on my pve server (either at one location or the other).

I did have a funny moment in a RvR area. I parked my character behind a tree near one of the objectives. When i logged back in, there was two Destro guys beating on the boss (a tank and healer combo). I ran up behind the healer and started owning her. Right before she dropped, the tank realized what was up. I finished her, and then killed him. It was a super cheap moment, but I was laughing the whole time.

I started a Witch Hunter and they seem pretty cool. I like their Victorian era appearance. Going to keep with the tank for now, because surviving in pvp is nice (even though I do die a lot, because I do lots of charging and drawing fire techniques).

I had preordered WAR but cancelled recently because I had some real life committments to take care of. I hope I will eventually play it a few months down the road. I had played Chosen and I really like this class, as I gravitate toward tanking classes (and healers, to a lesser extent).

Damn work, why won't you end already? I'm in Tier 2 and I have plans for some Keep battles tonight. Plus some troll dropped a really pimp hat yesterday and I want to admire myself some more.

I'm sort of in a dead zone as far as RvR goes right now. I'm midway through Rank 13, which makes me too high a level to go back to Tier 1. But I'm getting my ass handed to me in Tier 2 by all the Rank 20s running around.

The strange thing about Warhammer is that I don't mind dying in RvR and scenarios over and over again. Somehow it fits the gameworld. And the rare times you manage to take down an enemy five or six ranks above you are satisfying as hell.
Agreed there. I've never once thought, "To hell with this, let me out of this scenario." I just pop up and gleefully run back in, looking for some poor Alliance player down to a quarter-bar full of hit points so I can finish them off.

And I got a pretty cool helm from a champion troll I killed last night, so now I'm just a walking engine of death.

That spit's the only good thing ever to come out of an Alliance whelp!

I ran into the same problem and it made me wonder if maybe some people just arent doing rvr if they arent near the top of their tier levels? In tier one I rarely saw anyone until 7 or so and now in tier two Im usually the lowest level guy in scenario at 14. So either people are afraid of being outright murdered by the higher levels and just doing pve until they are that murder machine or maybe people near the top of the tier just arent trying to level as much so they can rack up the kills easier.

In any event I know how you feel, people pick me out of the crowd for being lower level consider me the first guy to kill to thin out the ranks a bit. If its only one or two people I can usually hold my own, especially against casters since White Lions are all about the dps on multiple targets at once but even one tank and I run into problems. My one complaint so far that unless you join a guild then scenarios are horribly unorganized, everyone just does their own thing despite the fact that you've been placed in a group intended to keep you alive longer. But maybe thats just Order on my server though, we get owned alot and seldom hold a keep for long though Id normally blame that on the large numbers imbalance. Incidentally, on the topic of numbers the other day I did the Troll Crossing scenario and it started the match with three Order and twelve Destruction for two minutes and then a server message said it was too imbalanced and closed the scenario.

It is Order man ! Order ! I hated Alliance in WoW (well hate is a strong word for a video game), and only played Horde. Now I have chosen Order, mainly because there so many Destro players. I figured i would help the numbers out a bit.

Also I am glad my work week is over so i can start playing again ! My girlfriend is not feeling well, so our date is canceled and I now have the night free ! Time to nerd out.

Force of habit.
I just made level 12 and have entered the dead zone. I am not exactly effective in the scenario and forget about open world stuff. I did Ok in some of the final damage stuff, but that was because I got ignored and kept beating on another tank. I never did dent him really.

Another thing albeit completely superficial that I like about Warhammer is that so far my character has never looked like a clown. The armor fits together quite nicely. I mean in WOW my level 70 that's half-way to his epic flying mount still looks like a hobo.
I agree with that. While the class appearances seem to be limited in each tier pier class, at least each class looks unique to it and looks cool. WoW is the most clown like of the games, EQ2 it takes some effort to look clown like. I am still waiting for a game that lets you design your characters appearance like CoH (and I mean besides another super hero game).

Lord of the Rings Online has a second set of clothing that's purely aesthetic -- it just alters the look of your character, it doesn't replace the stat-giving gear you're wearing.

They have that in EQ2 also. It would be nice to design your characters look in a manner like CoH. Not just picking pre-designed pieces. It is one of the funner things in CoH.

So I tried to log in this afternoon, and it disconnects my computer from the internet a few seconds after logging in. Tried turning off firewall and auto virus protection (using Norton 360), I ran the file check thing, and nothing. It worked fine last night, but today nothing. I also been having a problem downloading and applying the recent Vista patch (I have 64 bit). Updated my video driver too. This is annoying because nothing really change on my computer over night, but yet here I am.

They've started offering server transfers today from select low population servers to select medium population servers. I imagine that those low population servers will either be merged into one or done away with once this process is over, 'cause they're gonna be ghost towns.
If it wasn't already this game is officially in trouble. Instead of a 10-day free trial, they've basically made the game free through Tier 1. Which would be a great way of getting people hooked on the game if the other three tiers were even one-tenth as fun as the first one.

How did this game go so fucking wrong? It was so fun during the first two tiers and then abruptly went to shit.
Faction imbalance on the servers. Once one side got an advantage, PvP on that server became one-sided. And for a game sold on its PvP aspects, that's not good.

It also didn't help that its premier PvP feature -- the large-scale keep raids -- was laggy as hell once you got more than 30 people on each side involved.

Even besides that, the parts of the game unconcerned with PVP seemed to get logarithmically worse. The quests got worse, the areas duller, the loot insignificant. It was like a whole other team designed the content from tier two and after.

Out of curiosity, I took a look at the official site to see what's new. On the main page is a big link inviting canceled players to come back. So I click on the link, and the big incentive to come back is this:

An event that ended a month ago. Way to stay on top of things, Mythic. Curiosity sated.

I recently reupped my account. Wanted to play a MMO and had a blast playing this game. Having a blast again. Just lots of fun with this game. Also I got the 10 days for returning even though I reupped a few days ago.

To be fair to Cryptic, they didn't make this game. Mythic did.

Damn, my bad. Got my -ics mixed up.

Um, holy shit.

In a recent GDC 2010 interview with UGO, BioWare's Dr. Ray Muzyka said of Warhammer Online, "Right now it's [a] really profitable business unit within my group." Muzyka went on to say they've actually seen more people come into the game since enacting the free-to-play model on the game's earlier levels, and that he personally felt they were working.

In fact, by the sounds of it, Warhammer Online is due for some interesting announcements in the future. Another of Muzyka's comments on the title was, "We have new content planned and all kinds of cool expansions for it."
Apparently Mythic now falls under Bioware in the restructuring at EA. A Bioware-spurred Warhammer Online might be enough to get me to play again.

Anyone still play this? Check your subscription account because you might have been "charged 22 times in one month."

Quote:
Seeing between $500 and $700 disappear from your account not only causes a bit of panic, but can lead to bank charges due to accounts going overdrawn. Forum poster Brules suffered just such a problem with Mythic taking $500 in multiple increments, but then he also got hit with $67.73 in bank charges.
It's even happening to people who canceled their accounts months ago, so if you ever played the game, double-check your bank account.
