Survivor: Gabon

Premieres tonight. They are back in Africa and have some interesting characters.

According to a Survivor preview I watched, Probst' thoughts are

-- Bob's the resident Yau Man (As a high school teacher can probably relate to the younger folks better than most older contestants do)
-- Corrine's the bitch
-- Randy's the guy we love to hate (From his bio, "Randy Bailey wants to be personally responsible for crushing the hopes and dreams of all other contestants with delusions of winning SURVIVOR. He considers himself a ruthless bully who enjoys picking on those that were not blessed with his strength or intellect.")
-- Crystal is the obligatory famous/successful person (she's a 2004 Olympic Gold Medalist in track)
-- Matty is a famous person's fucked up kin (His grandfather is Oscar-nominated actor James Whitmore, his grandmother Audra Lindley played Helen Roper on Three’s Company, and his uncle is TV director James Whitmore, Jr. Matty inherited an 18 million trust fund and blew it all on drugs and alcohol; he's currently living below the poverty line)
-- Kelly's the "hot girl" and knows it

two hours tonight, can't wait!
Never been crazy about getting "celebrities" like Crystal or that former pro-football player from a few years back. To be fair though, it's a step up from the "LA-based bartender/actor-wannabes" Probst & Co. usually line up...
And apparently I went to high school with that Jacquie chick that's on the new season. Hmm, small world.

And no, at the moment I don't remember any salacious stories about her. Haha.
$18 million on booze and drugs? That's Richard Pryor levels.
I'll tune in for "Survivor Compton" but not before!
She might be kind of dim, but Sugar is so very delicious. I'll be watching her career with great interest.

Some beautiful scenery on this one. Much better than typical beach.
Well after watching this i have a few opinions.

1. I'm not that all impressed by the contestants, seems like same old, same old.

2. That gay dude, i swear that is the gay stewardess from the last survivor!

3. The olympic gold medalist obviously hasn't done any competition or even work out after she got the gold, since she was so slow and winded.

4. There's no way the physics teacher is 57!

5. Little Jay Z will be gone very soon.

6. I like Ken, hope the dork keeps going.

7. Eye candy, yeah, but Kelly being the "hot-girl" ????????????

Bob is clearly the person everyone is going to root for. How can you not love the physics teacher?

Marcus is going to win. He has it all - looks, brains, social skills.

The Fang tribe is a disaster. When the first three people picked were all the old women, how could you not scream "what the hell are you thinking?" When Fang talked about getting rid of Dan instead of Gillian, I almost threw my remote at the screen.

Sourpuss Michelle was right, those people might be the dumbest people alive. She was even dumber from alienating herself from the tribe though. I felt more sorry for the video game kid. It look liked he might finally connect with a special lady friend.

Kota is the superior tribe, but only because of a few people. All those ladies reaping the benefits right now - and being quite catty (Jacquie, I'm looking at you) - are gonna be in for a rude awakening soon. Survivor always shakes things up by the 3rd or 4th episode.

Hey-o!

The censors missed something:

I still had last week's ep DVR'd so I went back to see if this was legit. It is. The above images are blown up, but even on my tiny TV you can see mini-Marcus peek out.
Marcus' "little torch".
Hey! Where's the outrage now eh?!! *Points finger at FCC*
post #13 of 61
As getting back to the first post about Probst's thoughts, i haven't really seen Corrine as the "bitch" and Kelly never acted like the "hot one."

My only one observation is that the 2004 gold medalist in track is one of the least athletic people out there.

As for this past tribal council, Ace lied his butt off, he totally brought up the GC/Crystal breakdown similarities.

Why is Matty trying to save Kenny?

Randy is so funny, love to hate him. At least he did better in the "track" challenge then the gold medalist, thats probably why she was crying.
Why does the former Olympian appear to have no athletic abilities or stamina whatsoever? She has struggled in every challenge so far.

This has been such a lame season. Agreed that Krystal sucks. Fang sucks in general. Matty needs Kenny for numbers. Once the merge, Ace will run back to Kota and Matty shouldn't trust that Ace will keep him around. I don't understand Sugar's strategy. They know I have the idol so let me give it to Ace? She should be thinking, they know I have the idol so they're gonna try and flush it out. I need to keep it! Not much to say about the Kota members because we haven't had a chance to see their personalities yet.

Also, I have to point out that the two challenges Fang won were strategy games. Of course, the people will no food are going to lose athletic competitions. The producers could totally change the direction of the game by switching up physical challenges with mental ones.
While her strategy is puzzling, Sugar is the only compelling reason for watching this season. I needs the eye candy, because this has been deadly dull so far.

I like how Ace is British in the way that Madonna is British.

Two blindsides in a row and I still can't get interested enough to post about the show.

What I will post about is Ace getting arrested for drunkenly punching a girl in the face. Seems like he's as much of a jerk off the show as he is on.
Ha... I've never watched the show, but a friend in Naples just emailed me this story. He's kind of a friend of hers. She showed me some pics on Flickr recently of his going-away party. He has apparently turned into a real d-bag, and fakes his English accent. She says the rumor is that the girl he smacked had told him she wasn't impressed by said accent.

Anyway, I saw this thread in the New Posts list, and figured this was the reason. Funny.

Hope Probst brings that up at the reunion!

Fairly weak season. Still rooting for Sugar, but her strategy so far seems to be NO strategy.
Hoping Corrine, Bob or Matty will take this.

Sugar is dumb!
Crystal is the least athletic survivor this season and is an olympic athlete? Randy is loser.
Susie is annoying and will probably slide into the final 3.
Ken's reign is going to collapse around him soon.
Bob better speak up soon and start making friends.
Corrine needs a prayer.
Matty should win this.

So going into next tribal, There's Bob, Corrine and Randy vs. Crystal, Ken, Susie, Matty and an unsure Sugar.

I don't particularly like Randy but the preview for this week where he says he's gonna take everyone and everything around him down makes me want to root for him to succeed. It'll be utter chaos if he pulls off a Richard Hatch and wins it all!

That would be more entertaining if Randy wasn't a hateful, racist piece of shit.
Reunion is suddenly going to be great!
The irony is that the entire episode Crystal and Sugar kept saying that Randy was acting like a two year old, then at the challenge, you clearly saw them acting like two year olds.

Next week has to be the week that Sugar and Matty realize that Crystal, Suzie and Ken are tight.. and flip to Corrine and Bob.

When are Ken and Crystal going to realize that their top three cant happen cause Sugar has the idol and they have to vote her out first.

oh, and next weeks preview... not sure what to make of that. interesting though

Ha! That was glorious. Randy deserved it, but I agree that the rest of the tribe were acting just as childish as he was.

As for next week's preview, I thought someone would do that the day after the feast episode. I thought to myself, there is no way Marcus would be that stupid to throw an idol away. On the other hand, Marcus knew that Susie was unstable. If he had the idol, I would have thought he'd use.

There's usually a cut off point when Jeff takes the idol out of play whether its been used or not. In the past it had to be used before the final four. Or maybe it was five. In any case, it couldn't be used to determine the important spots.
I like how the editors of this episode didn't even bother to force drama this time to make you believe there was another option at Tribal Council. It was just "Please enjoy Randy digging his own grave for one hour."

Gotta say, at most reunions, tribe members will gloss over whatever shouting matches or arguments they had on the island when Probst grills them on it and say "It was just the Game! We're okay now!" I don't see that happening here. These people clearly hate each other's fucking guts.

I took that preview as Bob trying to cover his tracks with Corrine (was that who he was talking to?). He's making up a story about Marcus keeping the idol and him finding what Bob believed to be the real idol so as to avoid her supreme bitchiness being directed full force at him. That's my read.

good read . it thats true he's really digging a hole he cant get out of

Good call on Bob covering his ass, Mattoli.

Despite Ken's comment to the contrary, I think Bob is playing an awesome game. I hope he takes it all. The rest are all unlikeable people. Ken and Sugar are completely power hungry, Matty is a meathead, and Krystal and Susie are non-entities. Corrine has good strategic plans, but her emotions get in the way of her accomplishing them.

I am actually excited to see how this plays out because honestly I don't know how it will. Kenny and Krystal are pretty tight, but that's only two against Sugar, Matty, and Susie who aren't necessarily aligned, but could be if they feel threatened. And Sugar still has that idol. Kenny is definitely gonna try and flush that out as soon as he can.
I like Sugar a lot. She won me over the last couple of weeks.

Watching Corinne game herself to death tonight was glorious, though.
Kenny is clearly an idiot, there was no reason for him to vote off Matty.

Andy there was no reason for Matty to be so worried, yet he was. Just goes to show you what they show and dont show. Obviously he knew something was going on.

Didn't like Bob at first but hopes he takes it.
Kenny is a clown. He's one of those people who thinks he's far more clever than he actually is. Several hundred hours of playing Tomb Raider do not a Survivor champ make and he's going to machiavellian-scheme himself right out of the game.

At this point, I'd like to see the following individuals win most to least:
(1) Bob - My wife and I have developed loads of respect for this guy over the last few episodes. And the bow ties rock.
(2) Sugar - She was my favorite at the outset, although she's essentially useless at anything physical. Loved, however, that while she seems to be an airhead, she won last night's Gabon trivia challenge.
(3) Matty - He seems like a decent enough guy... sort of the every man in this edition. On the other hand, he apparently blew an entire fortune on drugs and hookers (okay, maybe not the hookers). On the other other hand, that may be awesome.
(4) Ken - See my comments, supra.
(5) Krystal/Susie (tie) - While Susie is a non-entity, Krystal is equally useless but with the added bonus of being all kinds of attitude-y. I'm most dumbfounded by her apparent absolute lack of athletic abilities or coordination. Seriously, what's that all about, Ms. Olympia?

Yes he did. He had no idea whether the idol was real or a fake. If it were real, Corrine would use it and whomever she and Bob voted for would be out. By voting with them, a) Kenny ensures that he has a choice in who gets voted out (Matty was the obvious choice as he's the biggest threat) and b) Kenny gains good will with Bob and Carrine (which worked because she mentions they were the only people she could stand). Good will means a million dollars when it comes to jury votes. It was also smart of Kenny to suggest Krystal vote Corrine precisely to see if she and Bob were lying. Which they were. It really was a great plan.

Even if he voted for Corrine and she had a "real" idol and used it, then Matty would have been voted off. He has no reason to gain "good will" with two people who are outnumbered. If he truely thought that the idol was fake but worth the try, he should have known that Matty would then knock him out.

As I mentioned, the good will is for Jury votes. Corrine now has a reason to vote for Kenny because she thinks he was aligned with her. Krystal looks the bad guy.
Now that Corrine is thankfully gone, I don't care who wins now. I'm all about the bitter, self-righteous final Tribal and what could be the most acrimonious Reunion show ever.

Still: go Sugar!
Matty's a major threat to all of them, on paper. He doesn't seem to be killing in challenges, though.

I'd kill Bob next if I was on the island. Between him winning two challenges in a row and using a fake idol scheme two tribals in a row, that guy would be on my shit list.

Not to mention that he's currently got all the jury votes sewn up.

Sugar's playing for second place right now, and I think she knows it. The best thing she can do now is align with Bob and say, "Take me to Final, and you're guaranteed a million. Meanwhile, I pocket a very respectful $100,000, thank you."

Its obvious Bob is the target. Prior to him winning immunity, he was the target. I can't imagine that strategy will change any time soon.

Up until the last few challenges, Matty was dominating. It was his win in that contraption thing they had to hold on the backs of their hands that allowed Marcus to be taken out, and thus, systematically his alliance. He was also crucial to winning that "golf" game where they had to sling shot the ball. Surrounded by competent people, Matty thrives. That said, he's back to being surrounded by idiots.
Yeah, but there's going to be few to no team challenges anymore. It's everyone for himself, and Matty seems unable to step up alone.
Thread Starter
Matty doesn't do well at the puzzles, but as I mentioned he already proved that he could outshine everyone in physical challenges. Standing with blocks on his hands was an individual win (with immunity extended to the tribe). If we see any future immunity challenges that require brawn, he will most definitely be a threat.
But at this point they phase out the pure brawn. There will be challenges that are less about pushing people off platforms and more about brainpower and stamina. He has the stamina bit wrapped up.

There is going to be the 'What do you know about your fellow Survivors' challenge yet to come, and there may be one more massive endurance test. Matty will likely not win the first. He could win the second.

Agreed.
Greatness tonight. I knew that Ken's plan last week was complete dogshit.
I think Bob has it in the bag, but I said that about Amanda last season also. Looking forward to a plethora of ugly jury speeches this finale!
Sugar is quite the little mastermind and all because of some nebulous concept of good guys versus bad guys. Not complaining, however, as Crystal should have been gone about 7 tribal counsels ago.
It's hard to remove myself from what I know and they don't know, but man, getting rid of Crystal was dumb. Sure, she's useless but

a) she's not the brains of the Kenny/Crystal evil team. Now Kenny has a chance to rearrange his strategy.

and

b) I'd rather be sitting next to her in the final jury than ANY of the others. She's useless in everything and she's a pain in the ass. She cannot win the million no matter what.

Well Sugar said herself that helping Matty was strategically stupid, but she's done quite well for herself so I can't question her logic.

Still hoping for Bob to take it all.

3 hour finale/reunion show starts now. Anyone watching?

Kenny and Susie sure don't know how to shut their mouths during tribal.

Isn't Bob a physics professor? Why can't he stack cards?

Sugar may not make the smartest moves but she is always thinking. I like how she's playing. I hope her plan saves Bob.

Holy crap, Bob is back! That's was awesome!

Wow, those were the worst tribal speeches ever. Susie spent the whole time listing her faults, Bob hammered home that he just rode on coattails, and Sugar took absolutely no credit for her strategic gaming. That said, I can't imagine Bob doesn't win.

How did Susie get that many votes? Matty, Kenny, Randy, Crystal???

Ahhh, Randy voted Bob. I can't believe how close he was of voting for Susie. He's hated get since the get go. Overcoming Bob's betrayal seems like a big step for Randy - the king of holding grudges.

Nothing too surprising coming out of the reunion show. I do think its interesting the gender differences in how we perceive Randy and Corrine.
